During the last few days an important issue has surfaced elsewhere that because of the personalities involved has been trivialized and from all appearances swept aside.

Specifically a question has been raised that a popular,active SP may have CHRONIC MENINGITIS.Under certain circumstances Meningitis could be contagious and fatal.

Now I am not trying to play doctor at the keyboard BUT the board has to address this issue by trying to find answers to the following:

1.) as a community board what responsibilities do we have in such situations?

2.) is it possible to establish a viable disease reporting system while protecting the privacy of all concerned? Clarification of the technical aspects of such an undertaking would be beneficial.

I hope for all concerned that the health of all involved has not been compromised.Perhaps the unfortunate situation will benefit the community
at large.

This is very serious stuff. I strongly recommend that she stops working and contact her clients to warn them immediately. If she refuses to do so, then we need to reveal her identity to all.

Meningitis could ...

... be acute: viral, bacterial, fungal. The chronic form is usually non contagious and of immune origin. One should know what is the exact diagnosis before making any prognosis or suggestions!

Ever consider the source of this rumor? Your hysterical response is exactly what the now banned perpetrator of this rumor would want everyone on this board to generate. Typically, when someone posts a serious and unproven allegation of this nature, it is done so with some kind of agenda. The fact that this individual suddenly popped out of nowhere to spread this rumor on this board would tend to support this.

I agree with you that something like this if proven is a serious matter. But this board is hardly the place to seek medical advice. There is obviously a lot of bogus stuff being posted here anyway so I would take everything with a big grain of salt. Having said that, I used to hang out on a board like this when I was living in SF and it had a separate section dedicated to medical information and FAQs. In fact, one of the regular posters in that section of the board is a friend of mine and he is a practicing MD so I can at least vouch for the veracity of what he's posting.

Back on Track

Let's get this back on track with a general observation.

Integral to being a mature adult is the ability to filter and evaluate information regardless of the source.Making a somewhat dramatic analogy - if you dismiss information because of the source and you happen to be wrong you will not be any less dead.

It would be appreciated if thoughtful and responsible would remain in the thread.

I like this ... maybe a new subject that's is going to occupied my time by searching medical information about it! ... if it wasn't already during my years of studying ... Anyhow, I may check on that, memory is a faculty that forgets!
