After being away for 18 months I need a new phone. Any recommendations for a phone/sim card that doesnt require a credit card to sign up, can buy "top off" time for cash from lots of locations in Montreal and Toronto?

I know some use apps. I'm uncomfortable having something on my regular phone. Dont know if there is a solution to that or not.

Recommendations really appreciated!

But don’t you have to create an account on the web that asks for your address and a credit card when you first activate your chatr SIM?

I have Fongo since several years. What I like is that you don’t need another phone nor SIM card. You have control of separate notification from built in regular text application from OS. When you’re done, you simply log off from application.
Con is that agencies and some indies don’t accept new callers from text applications. Didn’t have problem so far whith indies as I provide them good introduction and respecting interchange etiquette.
If you don’t like apps, maybe consider a phone with double SIM cards.

with chatr, you can buy top-up recharge from a depanneur or their store with cash. then text or enter them online to refill.

I agree with people suggesting chatr. I've been using them for years. Go to Best Buy, get a chatr sim card. You can give fake info (fake name fake address etc) to the employee to fill your profile and activate the card :) I haven't had a cellphone to my actual name in at least 4 years haha.

35$ a month (no contract) for unlimited calls and texts. If you want a plan with data you're looking at 40$-50$ a month.

If you're in Toronto you can get a SpeakOut sim from any 7/11, plus a top off, for cash. Activation is online; make a burner account with bogus info.
No monthly fees; sim is good for 365 days from last top off.

If you're not in Toronto, but elsewhere in Canada sans Quebec you can make one account to ship the sim and a second account for activation.

If you're in Quebec, hopefully you have a friend to forward you the sim.
