Hi Folks
I am a long time lurker. Live in Vermont and once per year get to your great city. It appears that Canada as a whole (so I am told) has a different cell system than Vermont. It was not always the case. So the last time I went my phone did not work and I could not do what I wanted to do. Can`t use the hotel phone for a variety of reasons.
So , can I just buy a sim card for when I need it? Not sure how that works. In the alternative can I just buy a burner phone and have it work this time and next time. Where to obtain such a phone? I must admit I am a novice as to cell phones as Vermont has limited coverage -including at my house.
Appreciate any help I can get and thank you all in advance for it.
Moreover, and as an after thought, I thank you all for the great site and reports. You should be aware by now, that you all live in Mecca and I am quite jealous ( I also have Prime Minister Envy- why can`t my guy be more like your guy!)

It appears that Canada as a whole (so I am told) has a different cell system than Vermont.

There are two different cell systems in the US, namely CDMA and GSM. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. GSM is also used by providers in Canada (and pretty much all over the world, for that matter.) If your current phone uses CDMA, it most likely won't work in Canada.

My solution would be to buy a GSM-compatible unlocked phone and then buy the cheapest SIM card you can find in Canada. Rogers or Fido or whatever, shop around a little. Just make sure that the phone is unlocked, so don't buy it from a phone provider. I would shop at Amazon, they have some good deals.

I’ve done this in the states, so I’m sure it’s relatively the same in the north. Best Buy, Walmart, Target etc. anyone of them should have burner phones for $20 for the basic flip phone type and more for the Android type. They sell pre paid minutes cards, you scratch them off like a lottery card to get the passcode. Turn the phone on and follow the instructions to add the minutes and your good to go.

Other way is to have an unlocked phone and buy a SIM card with minutes on it. I think the new iPhones come with a dual SIM card feature so you can use your personal phone and it will have a second number. Also, with an iPhone you can use WiFi calling so if you have crappy service you can at least make calls when logged on.

Well, I obviously simplified it a little. Some newer handsets are in fact compatible with both CDMA and GSM. My understanding is that no Canadian providers are using CDMA any longer.

OK, So I just hit Toronto. I didn't want to use my business phone to call escorts. I also wanted to avoid having an extra phone because I didn't want to get busted with it. So I stopped at a mall in Toronto. I went into a store (it wasn't Verizon but a similar company). I told them I wanted the cheapest option to phone and text. They sent me to a kiosk in the mall where they sell SIM cards. The company is Lucky Mobile. I got a plan that cost me 25$ for the month and a 10$ fee. Its good for 6 months and then if I don't some back to Canada, I can toss it and buy another. I've got all the text and calls I want and a little bit of data.

The reason I wanted to swap out the Sim card in my US based phone is so that I can call and text escorts without my employer having a record of this. I was surprised when I put the new Sim car in and my phone lit up and said something like This phone belongs to [Hungry101] of [my company name]. Now this was disturbing. I thought that (I'm hoping) that with the new Sim card I would have some anonymity. It seems that if I swap out the SIM card that it would be like a different phone? No? I don't want my company to be able to see that I am calling and texting escorts.

Sorry, and escort just left and I'm half in the bag already while writing this.

Let me restate the question for you techies:

I swapped out SIM cards so I can in fact have a 2nd phone and save money in the process. What is imperative is anonymity. Am I fooling myself thinking that my employer will have a more difficult time obtaining my phone records. Could it be that I am drawing unwanted attention to myself every time I swap out the SIM card?

Unless your employer is LE don't worry about it.Best practice is actually new sim+new phone because swapping the sim but sharing the phone doesn't provide full anonymity (your phone has a unique identifier called an IMEI number) and so when SIM1 connects to the network it registers it with the IMEI number and the same thing happens when you put SIM2 in the phone. So, to summarize: new sim should have a new phone both untied to your name.

Yeah, I probably should go out and buy a cheap device to insert the new SIM card in.

What I want to avoid is at the end of the month when I have to file expenses and I have a page full of escorts numbers included on the phone log.
