I don't know a single baseball fan and I've lived in Montreal my whole life, I fail to see why baseball would be a success today when it failed in the past.

Now an NBA team, that I feel would be much more interesting. Imo it is a much more exciting sport to watch live and young people actually watch it.

The problem would be that I doubt that NBA stars would want to live in Montreal. Toronto, a much more glamorous and international city, has a hard time with it and Vancouver failed in the past, but with the recent success of players from Montreal maybe it'd be worth a shot.

Am I the only one sick of hearing taxpayer money being spent on private sports venues?

Stade Olympique (didn't finish paying it off till 2015 !!!) -------------------------------------------- financial boondogle
Centre Videotron (400,000,000 $ --were supposed to recoup the invesment--right)----financial boondogle
New Expos Stadium ( how many billions you want to bet its going to be a)----------------financial boondogle
Formula 1 Montrel Grand Prix ( 20 million a year tll 2030 )------------------------------------------financial boondogle
So I live in Edmonton at the moment (joined MERB because I'm making a trip to Montreal later this year).

The Oilers got government money for their new arena.
The Flames are trying to get government money for their new arena.

I keep laughing. Alberta, the province of supposed do-it-yourself-ism, uses government money to build its professional teams' arenas. Meanwhile, the Canucks, Jets, Maple Leafs, Senators and Habs all built their arenas with private money (there may have been land deals involved, but I haven't dug into the nitty gritty details).

Government money should *never* be used for facilities that benefit the private sector almost exclusively. It's the same reason why I'm glad FIFA didn't pick Edmonton for the World Cup in 2026, and why I won't even be in the country during the World Cup. Same for the IOC. I don't want those corrupt organizations getting their hands on my tax dollars when our governments inevitably bend over backwards.
