Cloud your futuristic vision scares me. But I know you and know deep down you are a very intelligent dude. Which is scaring me even more now 
The problem with human is that it's easier to be a bad person then a good person. So humanity will not be able to stop AI to take over us. Sadly.

If you want a beer and go get it out of the fridge, that is indepentant thought. If a cat sees a windoe blind cord and plays with it, that is independent thought. A robot at a car manufacturer can only do assembly and welding, but if you give it too much AI and it defends itself and kills someone then that is also independent thought.
And he is also making the self-driving car and is a giant asshole. I went for a joke, I missed.
To answer the original question "Is AI a threat to humanity", I would say we should be carefull but I am pretty optimistic. On an other side, stupidity or ignorance "à la Trump" is a real threat to humanity.

I think we have other more pressing worries than AI taking over our lives in a probably distant future, in the short term the cia, military intelligence and other well known agencies say the greatest threat to mankind is all the crap we are presently doing to destroy our way of life, as already discussed to ´ad nauseum’.
