Les Expos de Montreal 2004

Vladimir

They drop the home opener, lets see how the rest of the season will go. A month ago I was thinking of attending the home opener game (30,000 fans showed up!) but I was stuck here.

Their official site is here Les Expos

So... today's game is at 1:05 p.m. and Tomo Ohka is on the mount (lets see if things have improved). Orlando Cabrera's bat is getting hot. I am going to be in town for the habs games against Tampa, don't think my schedule permits me to make the trip to Pie-IX metro station and catch one of their games during the week, but I think they are off to SF?

Does anyone else just wish they'd leave town? Man - it's like watching your old Aunt die - the keep hanging on for dear life.

Here's to the San Juan Expos!

They drew less than 9,000 for their last game in San Juan, not a good sign. Was major league baseball ever really popular in Montreal? Did the move out of Jarry Park, coupled with the birth of free agency, doom them? I was only a kid when the franchise was born, so I don't know much about the early days.

I’m pissed I just dropped $160 us dollars so MLB extra innings partly to watch some expo games we are in the third week of baseball and I have not seen a game yet!! With Mlb extra inning I can watch like up to 13 games a day, still not one expos game!! But I have watched the Yankees lose a couple of time on the YES network well worth my money!

I guess I will have to go up to Montreal to watch them live1

A couple of years ago, someone (can't remember who, possibly Peter Gammons of ESPN) had an interesting idea: switch the Expos to the AL East, where they could play the bulk of their home games against the Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays. Of course, someone would have to flip the other way (Tampa Bay?). Too late now, though. I wonder if the franchise is seeing an uptick in merchandise sales as people try to get a souvenir or two before the inevitable end? :(

Good job today beating the Phillies (2-0). Somehoe Zach Day was doing ok until the 8th inning. Then he collapsed and gave up 9 hits. Cliffhanger! Rocky Biddle earned yet another save, his 5th so far. The Red Sox blanked the Yankees, no surprise there.

Attendance at the Big O: 8,267.

I think the expos died about 5 years ago, and not that many people take them seriously anymore. Montrealers have voted overwhelmingly not to support whining millionaires getting paid millions of dollars to stand out in a field and shag a flew fly balls.

Hockey players at least work for their cash.

How about we start a total Expos boycott? Ask them to leave already, so we can knock down that ugly ass stadium and replace it something way more useful.

Hey Matt -

I'm with you, man : let's get proactive and have them KICKED out.

Would that be the 1st time ever that a city kicked a team out?

:)

save the expos

I will be sad to see the Expos leave Montréal. I usually spend a week end a year up in Montreal to see a game. Last year I spent about 6 US dollars to go to a game get crapy seats and move all the way to the front row! The first game I went to Shilling pitched the next day Johnson was pitching against Montreal. I cannot remember the score but I do remember the experience! I’m thinking about seeing the Atlanta game on May 25th and 26th

If it werent for Les Expos, I would've never have seen and fallen in love with Montreal. My first trip was because I followed my team , the Giants, to Montreal last summer. Although the Giants were swept away (4 games!), I had a blast the week I was there and will be returning this summer. I have tickets already for a couple of games against the Marlins & Astros.

From a marketing standpoint, its too bad the Expos couldnt have advertised in opponents' cities and sell travel packages allowing visitors to come and see their team play in Montreal. They could have filled alot more seats.

Thanks for the insight stripperlover. Being a tourist, It was actually an enjoyable part of the experience taking the metro from McGill to Pie IX. I guess for someone further out it could be a drag. I knew there was a cultural gap making baseball a hard sell. Being from south of the border, you can't believe the feeling I got when I sat in the best seats I will ever get at a major league game. I nearly peed my pants when I saw where my seats were. The San Francisco Giants sell out every game everyday. Its a small park but it 40,000 fans day in & day out. Never in my life will I get as close to home plate as I can get at Le Stade Olympique.

Why anyone would build an open air stadium in that climate is still in my mind beyond belief.

It better be an indoor stadium with plenty of Air Conditioning if they play in Vegas. It is so hot and dry in Vegas in the summer, that it would be UNSAFE for player and fan alike. I will see the Expos play the Giants this August @ SBC Park in San Francisco. If you get the opportunity, I urge you to visit that ballpark, it is a thing of beauty, and be sure to try an order of Garlic Fries while you are there.

So the rebuilding process begins again. Expos trade Everett to the CWS

Now that the All star game has passed does that mean the team will be back in Montreal next season or is there still the possibility ofmoving for next season if MLB finds a buyer later?

I thought their deadline to move was by all-star break otherwise they stay yet another season...if they stay, you won't hear me complain. I'll buy tickets to when the Giants are in town and I'll stay in Montreal @ least a week longer I promise to spend lots of money too!
