I am looking to upgrade my computer in the next 6 months. Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with MDG? What other suggestions for a good computer6

I used to deal with them. Then they got bigger and their customer service suffered of this. Nowadays, I prefer going to my local computer store since it's easier to discuss on what to customize..etc
But when I know what I want, I go to futureshop or order via Tiger Direct (www.tigerdirect.ca).
It all depends what you are looking for. If you want a low price, go to MDG. But you will get what you pay for. You would be better off going to a local computer shop and be able to pick the quality of parts that you want in your system. For what it's worth, I have two friends that purchased systems at MDG and both say they will never go back there again. I would also stay away from the big box places such as Futureshop or Bestbuy unless you plan on buying a brand name system such as HP/Compaq. tiger direct seems to have good prices until you factor in the shipping charges and the problems of getting service from a mail order outfit.
But it really depends what you will be using your system for. If you are planning to play games, or use the system for multimedia or image processing, you will need a different system than if you just intend on surfing the net.

When I need parts, I mostly buy from tigerdirect or from ncix (www.ncix.com). Places like FutureShop are way overpriced.
Macs are very nice machines but when it comes to running Windows and Windows apps, especially games, they cannot compare to a real PC. The hardware to run games properly is simply not available for a Mac. Sorry.
And Macs are nowhere near the price of PCs.

As a rule of thumb you really get what you pay for. There is so much fierce competition in the computer industry that the actual profit margin is kept pretty low on retail sales. They all bet on volume.
Don't trust specs. An example I give people : would you just rely on specs to purchase a car?
I've noticed that not only are you going to face issues within the first year, but the worst is when you need to find driver support for your hardware 2-3 years down the road.
The way I usually judge a mfgr for either computers or components, is to look at their support section. They usually have forums and driver downloads. Companies that have invested in such areas and have files available for older hardware will usually tend to be a good investment.
I've seen far too many oem/generic companies that simply dissapear after 1-3 years.
If you're not comfortable with the technical stuff, I strongly urge you to invest a little more in an established brandname and be informed as to the limitations of the warranties.
If money is an issue, I'd think at taking a look at the classifieds. There are always "tech nuts" that always get the latest and greatest every year, and sell off their used rigs. I prefer to get a used system that was top of the line 1-2 years ago, then spend the same amount on a new "introduction" line Today... but that's my personnal opinion.

I am using an MDG computer that I bought 2-3 years ago. I have only had an issue with the monitor (Philips). I was reasonably satisfied with MDG when I bought this PC, but I found that they tend to nickle and dime you to death if you get lured in by the attractive "FREE UPGRADE TO..." advertising. Like I was.
The system advertised did not include an ethernet card (required for surfing the net), and a couple of other user experience enhancing parts. These were all extra cost. The FREE printer, camera, etc, etc, were all mail in rebates, so I would have had to pay the up-front cost and waited for a refund if I had taken them. The extended warranty only covers the PC tower, nothing else. My Philips monitor crashed 2 weeks before the warranty expired on it, and it took 1 month before they decided to replace it. Thankfully they have a repair centre in St Laurent, so I didn't have to pay for s/h. The parts used inside the computer are actually fairly good quality name brands, but tend to be 1-2 years old in design.

The technician I was dealing with could not have been more rude in the way he talked, not only to me, but to other clients as well. I may not be a computer genius, but that's no reason to treat me like I'm 4 years old. I, personally, don't appreciate being laughed at to my face, when I'm considering paying good money for something. After a nice "F@ck you very much!", I left and went to Future Shop (I know, I slammed them in another thread) and bought one of their bargain systems. I had the add a few improvements and still came out with a far superior machine at a better price.
