So far 45,000 of the 94,000 available tickets have been sold to the Mets-Blue Jays exhibition game next March. A good start. Montreal needs to send MLB a message: we want our baseball back.

Here's an article from today's Gazette on Warren Cromartie's press conference from yesterday.

A new poll shows that 69% of Quebecers want MLB back in Montreal.

Montreal needs to send MLB a message: we want our baseball back

The reason it left is because nobody went to the games

We used to wonder why there was only 10,000 people tops when the Expos were almost in first place

Bonus Question-

At Dieu du Ciel, there are baseball cards of 2 Expos behind the bar...

Anyone know who they are ?

Best Regards

Look behind you.
I am not a baseball fan but took my son to the last Expos game here. Sad that an area that has about 5 million people can not support a franchise.
I would see a live game but not much of a TV fan ( except the " Glorious Edmonton Oilers " ).

What I don't understand is why no one ever tried to bring a AAA franchise up here...
Because that would signal the death knell of any possibility of an MLB franchise ever coming back to Montreal.

The reason it left is because nobody went to the games
That, Sir, is not remotely true, except in the last years and there are many extenuating circumstances, too many to go into here, but I'll give you a) the sabotage of the franchise by MLB and b) a succession of lousy ownership after the Bronfman family sold the team. In the years of the Bronfman ownership, the Expos were among the attendance leaders in the National League year after year. The Brochu cartel ran the franchise into the ground, assisted by the 1994 strike that took the World Series away from the best team in the game. A lousy stadium. A lousy location. In the last years, a lousy exchange rate. There's more but I'll leave it here.

After the Expos left I stopped following baseball and do not give a damn about it as it makes me sick to my stomach.

Even if they do return there is no way they can go back playing at the Big O.

Given the state of the Quebec economy and deteriorating infrastructure there is no way the government will fund a new stadium.

Real estate to build a stadium is really hard to find now as the race to build condo developments has taken away alot of land before the condo boom bust.

Very true.

Also quite true, however, I think the days of public money being spent on ballparks is over everywhere. When the Rays move, and move they will, the money spent on their new park will be private. BTW, among the nicest ballparks in the country is ATT in San Francisco. It cost half of what the other new ballparks cost and is the only one built with private money.

True, but there are still places. The site that was to be used for the Expos new park has been developed into condos. Personally, I think the Bluebonnets site would be perfect. The Metropolitan and the Decarie both run by and there's a Metro stop.

This from Nick Cafardo's Sunday Baseball Notes column in the Boston Globe today:

Montreal now seen as a viable alternative

We’ve written before about a Montreal baseball revival. But now there’s some real talk about the possibility that the Rays, for instance, could see Montreal as a real alternative if plans for a new stadium don’t work out in the Tampa area.

The reason?

As we’ve pointed out, the Montreal business community is much different than it was in the past. There are large telecom companies and financial institutions with big money. The city would need a new stadium, but Montreal baseball has a very strong grass-roots movement to explore the possibility.

As one AL executive pointed out recently, “Other cities — Washington D.C. and Seattle — have received second chances for franchises. It appears that Montreal would be a viable second-chance city given the financial opportunity there now. There have always been great baseball fans there. They never had a venue that was desirable for baseball and the economics never allowed them to keep the great talent they developed over the years.”

Former Expos outfielder Warren Cromartie, one of those spearheading the return of major league baseball to Montreal, said the group he’s formed will soon announce the results of a feasibility study, which Cromartie said has been positive.

Montreal will also host spring training games March 28 and 29 between the Blue Jays and the Mets, a sign that MLB sees the city as a viable option for expansion and/or relocation. Unfortunately, the games will be played at Olympic Stadium, but part of the feasibility study includes the building of a downtown stadium.

“We’ve sold 50,000 tickets for the games already,” Cromartie said. “We’re very excited about these games and a big gala we’re going to have. We hope to bring back all of the old Expos, like Pedro Martinez, Larry Walker, Moises Alou, and many others. We’re going to honor Felipe Alou. It’s going to be great.”

5. Couldn’t tell really, but I thought Tampa Bay owner Stu Sternberg’s ears perked up when I mentioned Montreal.

We'll never see MLB back in Montreal in our lifetimes. The fact is, the fans would stop coming to the games once the initial interest/curiosity has run its course. And considering that the province of Quebec is one of the highest taxed provinces/states in the western world, the team would have a hell of a hard time attracting quality players to come and play for Mtl.

Multiculturalism is steadily on the rise in Mtl and it's a fact immigrants and non-caucasians don't really give a damn about baseball. They're more into soccer and football.

NBA basketball would have a better chance of succeeding in Montreal.

Thanks for showing us just how little you know. Baseball is near religion in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Venezuela. Did you know that the Toronto Blue Jays, exclusive of the pitching staff, have more non-caucasians on their roster than caucasians?

Let's see now. We have homophobia, misogyny, and now we can add xenophobia and Quebecophobia.

I was referring to the majority of Montreal's immigrant population. The dominicans, cubans & venezuelans are a small minority of Mtl's immigrants.

Well at least i'm not a miserable sarcastic old man who only sees the glass as being half empty & rarely brings something positive to the board other than mocking his fellow members, instigating childish flame wars & showing to everyone what an arrogant narcissist he is.

I expect you to now add gerontophobia to the list.

Why that's as nice a load of insults as I've seen in quite some time.

You, sir, however, are both hilarious and hypocritical. Just a few days ago, you fouled Molly's thread with the most misogynistic, nasty rant, actually two of them, that I've had the displeasure to read in quite some time. Thankfully the mods have been kind enough to hide the retired lady's thread. There's not one SP in this entire city who would spend four seconds with you after reading that vile garbage.

Now you're trashing people with beards. Trashing Montreal and Quebec at every opportunity. If you weren't quite so despicable in your hideous ranting against the women who bring most of us pleasure, I might even feel sorry for you. If you really feel that way about these wonderful women and this fabulous city, why are you even here?

And, by the way, my glass isn't half full; it's overflowing, thanks, in part, to the girls of whom you think so little.

Reverdy, the Conference Board report you link to is two and a half years old. A lot has changed since then. There was, at that time, not so much as a whisper of Montreal as a home for MLB. Now articles by prominent writers are appearing on a regular basis. The Rays have to move; Montreal would be a gold mine for them with 9 games per year vs. the Red Sox, 9 with the Jays, 9 with the Yankees.

Montreal is the second largest metropolitan area in the US and Canada without a major league franchise. The only one bigger Riverside-San Bernardino (CA) would require a sign off from the LA Dodgers, who control the territory. Other much smaller cities that have lost their teams have gotten new ones: Kansas City, Seattle, Milwaukee. And, of course, Washington. Seattle is similar in size to Montreal; KC and Milwaukee are much smaller.

I say MLB is here within 10 years. But one thing that will NEVER happen here is a ballpark built with public funds.

The following is from this past June.

Rays Owner Says Major League Baseball Will Return To Montreal

Tampa Bay Rays owner Stuart Sternberg was asked about the feasibility of putting another MLB team in Montreal and his answer suggested that the city's next baseball team is just a matter of time.
In a Q&A with Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com, Sternberg was asked if Major League Baseball could work again in Montreal.

"Yes," said Sternberg. "I know it can."

Sternberg was then asked if Montreal will ever get another team. The former Goldman Sachs partner said it won't happen in the next five years, but "in the next 20 [years], yes."

The Montreal Expos existed from 1969 through the 2004 season, when they relocated to Washington D.C. and became the Nationals. So it might seem like an odd move if MLB's next team's relocation were to move to Montreal.

While Montreal enjoyed strong attendance earlier in their existence, they drew less than 1.0 million fans in six of their last seven seasons north of the border. And in 2001, they averaged less than 8,000 fans per game.

Some have suggested that the owners sabotaged attendance in order to move the team. If true, they were very good at it.

But as Strernberg mentioned, the most recent crop of stadiums will need to be replaced in the next 20 years. And as long as there is strong corporate support in Montreal, he believes a team could look north for a new stadium.

As much as i would LOVE to see MLB back in Montreal, i have to agree with Doc and Reverdy, and Rev that was some eye opening info you posted, thanks for doing so.

It would be awesome to have a brand new stadium in downtown Montreal. Personally, I would try to go to at least 30 games or more per season. Just imagine the scenario, it is a warm summers night, you walk to the ballpark, have a few cold ones, maybe a hot dog or pretzel and check out the sights. (all those sexy lady Expos fans)..oh and watch the Yanks and Expos battle it out for 3 hours and then walk to Chez Paree for an hour or so and end the night by calling one of the GoodGirls. It dont get any better than that my friends...Ahhhhhhhhh what a perfect night in a perfect City it could be. (key word being "could", but better word being "i wish" and even better word being "not likely".

Although things look bleak at MLB returning to Montreal anytime soon, I still have hope it happens and the sooner the better.

I've already signed up for a 20 game package, iggy. Again, the "eye-opening" that Reverdy posted is 2 1/2 years old. The landscape is vastly different today, thanks in large part to the Miami Marlins.

And, by the way, while the conference board did state 30 months ago that it was unlikely that baseball would return to Montreal, the report also stated that Montreal could support a team. Read the whole thing. Given the changed landscape, when you look at the economics they cite, they would likely have a very different finding today.

1. The owner of the Rays likes the possibility of baseball in Montreal and believes it will return.
2. The commissioner of baseball has stated that the Rays need to get out of their lease and play in a new park, in Tampa or elsewhere.

Within 10 years, mark my words. Montreal is a goldmine for the Rays. Don't think for a second that Stuart Sternberg isn't salivating at the thought of 1/3 of his schedule a guaranteed packed house.
