Montreal heavy metal scene

Lately, I've been playing lots of Pantera mainly because the death of Vinnie Paul. I've been at their show in Verdun around the mid-90's.
Love them very much and it think they push me somehow to go more heavy - like European melodic metal and metal-core (In Flames + The Sorrow).
Slayer+Lamb Of God
Some did mentioned here "The Farewell Tour" at Place Bell. I was head banging hard for Lamb Of God. I've never seen Slayer before so I had to focus and see all the details.
The lights got lower. Smoke are going up. Tom was telling us the direction of South of Heaven. Flame thrower in the back was displaying a pentagram in fire... man, I was like: Oohh damn!!
Metal chick
Dora from Arch Enemy is hot. I like her voice and a couple of her songs. But now with the hottest metal babe Alyssa-White, you want to hear more about Arch Enemy. Can you believe she's from here?!!! Man, that make me feel proud to be from Montreal.
I do like Dora's voice better.
I saw "In this Moment" during the Ozz-Fest. There's a couple of songs that have good energy... but man, those tits!! I would be surprise if they were natural boobs.

There was a local band back in the 80s that I believe was around as popular as Voivod. Anyone remember Sword? They released two great albums back then: METALIZED and SWEET DREAMS. Speaking of Voivod their cover of Pink Floyd 's "Astronomy Domine" was killer.
Sword was cool. However, Voivod are cited as an influence by so metal bands. The early era, the guitarist Piggy was highly influential.
And I agree, their cover os Astronomy Domine is just WOW and timeless. They also covered Pink Floyd’s Nile Song later...which is also great.

I was disappointed too at first. I must say it is growing on me quite a bit. Some of the interludes are “bof”. I encourage you to keep spin it a few more times. I wish I could catch them live, but they are skipping MTL.

Listened to the singles over the years, not paying much attentions. The masks were a turnoff. One of my kid is way into them and I started spinning full CDs. Not bad. .5 the gray chapter is the one that got me so far.

Just want to comment on post 15...from over a year ago lol. I see your point Mr. P: LIFE AFTER DEATH by Iron Maiden would ve been a great introduction to metal! I actually got into Maiden with the album just before it: Powerslave. The LIFE AFTER DEATH album actually comes from the Powerslave tour. Powerslave came out in 1984...the same year as so many other great metal/hard rock albums by bands like Judas Priest, Dio, Van Halen, Ratt, Scorpions, Whitesnake etc. I first saw Maiden touring for their next studio album SOMEWHERE IN TIME at the Forum in 1987. The following year I saw them again for the Seventh Son album. The opening act for that show was Guns N Roses. Back then not only were concert tickets only about $20 but many times you would get a great opening act. Good times. Maiden always kills it live. Singer Bruce Dickinson actually speaks fluent French and would have audiences eating out of his hand here lol.

I've been trying but so far no go. Don't fret over seeing them live - I saw the 10,000 days tour in Vancouver and it was quite possibly the worst show I've ever seen (and as I said, I loved the album). Sound was horrid couldn't hear Chandler at all, and Maynard was behind a white screen standing still the entire night.
Below, you're a braver man than I to sit through 10,000 Days. I couldn't finish it. There was something so straightforward about it that almost made them sound like just a generic band. They definitely needed a break. But what was the point of a break to write mostly 10 minute songs on the new album? It's as if they were trying to counter the accessibility of 10,000 Days with protracted, harder-to-listen-to songs.
I'm not necessarily knocking long songs. Third Eye from Aenima was a long song and it was perfect, and it was the last & only song that long on that album. Little wonder my mind goes back to Aenima because that was peak Tool. I liked Lateralus and saw them on that tour, but Aenima was their high water mark. Undertow and Opiate are the next best in descending order.

Tool is a band with too many rabid fans. - there's no way to meet their expectations.
i say "them" because i was one of them, i suppose. - i've been on board since lolapalooza, they evolved.
But they can't anymore because :
A) it's not fun to face that crowd , they have to stick to the script.
B) they can now comfortably retire , they couldn't - until the previous album. Motivation shift
C) they got an inspiration dry spell , (music industry bullshit didn't help) they got their mojo back, but it's not the same
they took this long because they wanted to do other things than playing/re-creating the same songs over and over.
Maynard hints that loosing negative fans would be beneficial for the band , long term
they set out to be "Led Zeppelin"-like , they are more "Pink Floyd"-y.

Someone mentionned Sword, it's vague, can't really recall, I remember Grim Skunck and Groovy Aardvarck tho.

What can I tell you - I enjoy a well cocieved vision. Vicarious has to be one of the cleanest well executed songs around for that style. Sure it is not raw (and I'm old so I know raw), and is on the commercial/more polished side of metal (similar to Metallica Black) - but it still drives and was incredibly well produced. As for live - not so much. And the new album just seems like it tries way too hard.
