Thinking about making another trip to Montreal soon.... I know it's very cold during January, but I was curious if it is hard getting around during that time, i.e. lots of snow? I can always check weather.com, but it doesn't give me the human side of it. For all you guys and ladies who live or visit Montreal during this time of year, please provide some insight.

Based on my experiences in Mtl, I would say that Jan. and Feb. represent the two coldest months in MTL.
Thanks for the responses.... So to sum your responses, it will be cold with some snowfall. Also, typically no problem getting around the city for hobbyists and SP's.....Right??

As for the sp's, there should not be a problem. In fact, I think you might get more on-time arrival by the sp's during this time than you would during busy summer times, such as the Grand Prix weekend.
As for the hobbyists, if you can manage to drive in snowy conditions, then you should have no problem. The only problem is that if you have to walk summer, then it might be unpleasant.

I have been in Montreal each of the last several winters in both January and February. On all of these visits it was very cold, but on one visit (I believe it was last February but may have been February 2003) it was the coldest weather I have ever experienced and while walking down St. Catherine every block or so I had to stop and duck into a store because the sides of my nose were freezing and I was having trouble breathing through my nostrils. I think it was like -25 F or some hellaciously cold temperature and it was just brutal. In this kind of weather you want to stay at a hotel like the Hyatt where you are on top of a mall and have access to the underground city so you don't have to go out into the elements. And by all means do whatever you have to do to keep your cock warm, or no hobbyist activities for you!
I should note that generally temperatures are 8-10 degrees cooler in Montreal than where I live in Connecticut so my body is unprepared and it seems colder than it probably does to the natives. My friend Doc Holliday, who actually lives far north of Montreal, got a good laugh about this when we walked over to Crescent St. after the hockey game we saw a few weeks ago at the Bell Centre. He told me that Montreal always feels warmer for him, but he lives a whole lot closer to the north pole than I do.

I New Year's in Montreal a few years back. Big mistake. It was so cold that walking the two blocks from my hotel to Ste. Catherines was enough to freeze everything in my nose almost instantly. It hurt to breathe it was so cold. Possibly the coldest I've ever experienced and I've been at the top of Killington in the middle of January and suffered through Boston's coldest winter on record least year. Never again. I'll wait until March at the earliest to venture there again.

Short of Montreal getting shut down by a blizzard which I have yet to experience, everything shld be fine. After all, winter is part of life in cities like Montreal. However, if you're not a cold weather person, might want to stay away from the Old Montreal hotels and stick to hotels which are linked to the underground city.
Thanks again for all the great input. I live in the midwest near one of the great lakes so I'm use to some cold winters. But, I think on average it's about 5 - 10 degrees colder in Montreal. During my summer/spring visits I tend to walk for more people watching as I walk. When I've been there Nov./Dec. I would take a cab everywhere I go. With all this great I may not be able to go in January after all, for business reasons.
According to the NY Times weather page, the current temperature in Montreal is -15 F. I was just outdoors and I'd say the Times is right. Montreal is brutally cold right now and we've just come thru about a week of snow. Keeping upright on the layers of ice, frozen slush, and gravel is a tremendous pain.
If I had the money I'd take Eager's advice and go live in the Hyatt until March or April. As it is, I'll just pass on the advice to winter tourists: pick a hotel above a mall and do not go outside. Then come back when it's warmer and see the city.

I was in Montreal 1/14 - 1/17, had a great time. Weather was not too bad. In fact, it was cold from the midwest to the northeast. I was lucky to visit before it got really cold.
