New Tarantino Film: "Grindhouse"

I see that Quentin Tarantino's latest masterpiece, "Grindhouse", a double feature that spoofs 1970s exploitation films, is due in theaters on Friday. Has anyone seen a sneak preview? Post your reviews here!

Apparently Tarantino buddy Robert Rodriguez directs the first part of the double feature, "Planet Terror", a zombie film spoof, which is followed by a faux intermission and 4 faux trailers (reportedly, the best of which is directed by Tarantino protege Eli Roth), which is in turn followed by the instant Tarantino classic, "Death Proof", starring Kurt Russell as a demented stuntman in what is said to be a career-best performance.

Let's hear your feedback on this double feature which is going to rock Easter weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It got very positive reviews on Ebert and Roeper (from Roeper and his guest critic of the week - Christy Lemire, I think). The concept is interesting and the clips had the style you'd expect. Roeper said there was a great car chase worth waiting for late in the movie - and Roeper isn't usually a car chase fan. Christy preferred the first part because she said Tarantino's part was too slow moving but Roeper liked it all. He said Tarantino is still great with dialogue. I'm looking forward to it because I think both Tarantino and Rodrigues rock. You can keep your pompous Oscar-winning directors. Spielberg, for example, knows how to make movies and he used to be good...until he decided to make "art" and "pictures of deep human significance". Please spare us the pretentious BS and give us entertainment. That's what T and R do all the time.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Tarantino's dialogue is obviously his strength, and supposedly this movie has some of the best dialogue since Pulp Fiction.

When I saw this thread, I thought it might be a movie about a strip club like Cleo's...hmm, maybe he would be a good director to make such a movie. :D

I also feel the synergy between T & R on many levels is brilliant. I also enjoyed Tarantino’s contributions in Sin City, as he was invited as Special Guest Director.

This is certainly my favorite comic book movie, I believe the best ever made,……..and Jessica Alba’s role as Nancy, fully clothed and sexy as hell as a dancer at Kadie’s Club Pecos.

Also, the film features Michael Parks, who played multiple characters in both Kill Bill movies, another Tarentino set.

The captions in movie ads are taken from reviews in media. The thing is that the review might say something like "The soundtrack was superb for its use..." (NY Times) or "The incredible special effects..." and the poster will end up saying "Superb!" (NY Times) and "Incredible!" not the same thing...

Regardless, I look forward to seeing Grindhouse as well!

As a film/DVD reviewer, yeah, I know that. :)

I just found it funny that someone would use these terms for a film he hasn't yet seen. Hence the reference to those out of context quotes on movie adds.

I am not shilling for Tarantino. Do you really think he needs EagerBeaver to wage a marketing campaign for this movie on MERB??????????????????? For what???????? Come on! The movie is going to make $100 million this weekend whether I started this thread or not.

I just happen to be a big fan and believe all his movies are masterpieces and classics, nothing more and nothing less. And the readers of this thread can take that it into consideration when they read my review, likely to be posted tomorrow or some time this weekend.

DVDTalk review. Not that good... **1/2 stars and Tarantino's segment seems to be by far the weakest of the two.

Where Grindhouse falls apart is in its second feature, Death Proof. If this film were made by anyone other than Tarantino, it would be quickly dismissed as jumbled crap. It is too long, the script is weak, and when all is said and done, it fails to be what it sets out to be. Planet Terror remains true to its schlock cinema roots, but somewhere along the away Death Proof gets confused, as if Tarantino, in a panic felt he couldn't just make a junky B-movie, but instead had to try and infuse some of his past magic into the script. But the "magic" is stale and tired and, most important, out of place in this film. Tarantino tries to use some of the same gags and visual tricks Rodriguez employs with Planet Terror, including the "missing reel" bit, but nothing helps to salvage this stumbling mess.

I saw Grindhouse today. As I bought my ticket the theater personnel were warning customers that the movie has scratches and popping sounds, I guess some people don't get it or are too young to get it.

Personally, I felt "Death Proof" was better than "Planet Terror", although they were both good. "Planet Terror" was a gorefest which brought back some memories of "From Dusk Til Dawn." There is a lot of cheeky violence and gore. It is probably truer to the 1970s junky B movie genre than is "Death Proof." Death Proof is more a homage to the muscle car films of the 1970s.

"Death Proof" starts off kind of slow, but finishes with a car chase that has you on the edge of your seat the whole way and feature some things never done in car chase scenes before. Kurt Russell is excellent as Stuntman Mike although he meets his match in Zoe Bell.

The best of the Trailers is "Thanksgiving" by Eli Roth, which also features very campy violence and gore.

Overall, I give Planet Terror a B+ and Death Proof an A-.

I left "Death Proof" to get concessions at the very end of the scene where Kurt Russell commits vehicular homicide on Rose McGowan, and missed the scene in which the girls from the Austin bar apparently met their demise. Can anyone tell me what happened? Send me a PM.

I didnt, I thought it was a bit much.

Is Grindhouse along the lines of KillBill or more like Pulp Fiction (a movie I loved)????

"Death Proof" is not really comparable to either of the films you mention, but those who liked "From Dusk Til Dawn" will like "Planet Terror."

It's a double feature. See my original post. The two films do not correlate, although interestingly, many of the same actors appear in both films.

Nothing in common. Grindhouse is an hommage to campy 'B' movies from the 70's made with small budgets, which included everything from blaxploitation, campy slash-em-up horror, HK kung-fu flicks, Italian zombie films, and seedy sexploitation.

You left out muscle car films like Vanishing Point, which is what "Death Proof" is homage to.

And even spaghetti westerns, nunsploitation and rape/revenge films. There was a whole range of genres that fell under the Grindhouse label.
