In another move of the Trump administration to protect us from those nasty immigrants coming here for Asylum etc., No new or renewals will be accepted from any New Yorkers since NY passed a law that allows undocumented immigrants to have a drivers license.

Homeland security claims they can not do required background checks on New Yorkers. I have no clue what background info just from a DL.

BTW as discussed on another older thread. Customs is way behind on many Nexus renewals for us not from NY. Old Nexus cards are now good for 12 months beyond the expiration date. I applied for my five-year renewal more than six months ago and still in progress. It includes Trusted Traveler and has been easy to bypass customs in Canada and returning from Germany last summer.

US Customs processing these documents was gutted of staff when Trump moved so many to the Southern border to help cage folks (and children) coming across with the hands up wanting to be picked up, as they fled the violence in So America with family being killed by the gangs etc and seeking to be a refugee in the U.S.

I don't think illegal aliens should be allowed to have a license. They should get one when they come over legally.

Where were you Dave when the Obama administration (the Deporter-In-Chief) was detaining people? Oh I'm sorry I called them Illegal Aliens. That's offensive to the enlightened. How about Future Democratic Voters of America?

I thought the reason for the delay was because there were so many people signing up for the program and as always the fed wasn't prepared for it.

While I am neutral on the New York giving DLs (along with 13 other states and D.C.) in all controversial issues I exam both sides of an issue.

I believe "undocumented" includes zillions of University students whose educational Visa's have expired. We train some of the best from around the world and send them home to compete against us when we (in US) have far more unfulfilled jobs than unemployed but few that can qualify. This is both for high-end tech jobs and lowest end jobs - crops are rotting in fields since no workers to pick them for certain crops.

It requires proof of ID from foreign documents such as a passport from their home country. ICE can still get a court order to obtain the information.

The purpose is to help New York grow their economy since need the foreign workers, while at the same time make roads safer by them having the same requirements as US drivers. It was especially supported in rural areas desperate for workers

The reason for issuing DLs had some good reasons.
They are required to pass the same written exam as anyone so they know the laws. And pass the road test. Having a license protects the public since without a license they can not get insurance. It also allows the State to compile a driving record and can suspend license for violations just as with all DL' s

The DL is stamped "Not for Federal Purposes" so will not be allowed on airplanes and can not be used to register to vote.

New York will give to the Feds information to update the National Driver Register, which allows states to share information about driving records.

Helps law enforcement more easily ID someone doing something wrong so they could be arrested (and deported most likely)
