Check out this interesting story that I just read which explains what the purpose of the NSA domestic spying in America is:

Before flinching at my assertion of blackmail, ask yourself why President Bush refuses to obey the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The purpose of the FISA court is to ensure that administrations do not spy for partisan political reasons. The warrant requirement is to ensure that a panel of independent federal judges hears a legitimate reason for the spying, thus protecting a president from the temptation to abuse the powers of government. The only reason for the Bush administration to evade the court is that the Bush administration had no legitimate reasons for its spying. This should be obvious even to a naif.

The United States is undergoing a coup against the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, civil liberties, and democracy itself. The "liberal press" has been co-opted....

The TV networks mimic Fox News' faux patriotism. Anyone who depends on print, TV, or right-wing talk radio media is totally misinformed. The Bush administration has achieved a de facto Ministry of Propaganda.

The years of illegal spying have given the Bush administration power over the media and the opposition. Journalists and Democratic politicians don't want to have their adulterous affairs broadcast over television or to see their favorite online porn sites revealed in headlines in the local press with their names attached. Only people willing to risk such disclosures can stand up for the country.

Apparently the NSA has collected a lot of extra sex and SP and masturbation stories about congressmen, senators and journalists, no wonder they are like a bunch of sheeps nowadays. I'm sure they didn't refrain from collecting prominent Canadians' sex stories in order to blackmail them in the future. Sex kills.

Only glad that you and I the insignificant ones don't have to worry that our SP experiences might be loaded with consequences.

Being in DC, I have many friends who work for the NSA. They are livid with the stories in the media. They say they really could care less about any sexual activities they discover through surveillance and that they are only concerned with terrorist stuff. Then again, they are die-hard Bush supporters and I don't discuss politics with them much for fear of someone choking someone else.

But in any case, any time you are a celebrity or politician, your life will come under a microscope. I suppose it's fair in a way. They get all that fame and fortune, but at the price of their privacy. I'm glad that for us, as nobodies, people don't care what we do.

Taken at face value, the "story" might be an interesting read, but it isn't a story as much as an opinion piece from a left-wing site. This is pure "sky is falling" rhetoric. There is no evidence that the Bush administration is using anything they find for political purposes, unlike what happened in "FileGate" where hundreds of FBI files on political opponents were found in the White House.

This is from a column by Paul Craig Roberts, man, hardly a left-wing. He is a traditional conservative, former assistant secretary at the treasury department during the Reagan times. Hardly a cyber-geek nobody. When he says something, you listen, because he has plenty of government connections that keep him informed.

The neocons are using the war to achieve their agenda of Israeli hegemony in the Middle East.

Republicans are using the war to achieve one-party rule--theirs.

Agree with him or not, believe he is in "the loop" or not, this guy is far from conservative. And this is all from the article that you referenced. There are lots of other examples but right now I'm too tired to debate the obvious.
