It is a stunning realization that smartphones, social media and dating apps are a strong contributor to many of our profound social problems: youth anxiety, particularly in girls; political polarization; now widespread conspirational thinking; behavioral addictions including porn, gambling and shopping; the fertility crisis; the commodification of intimate relationships; decrease of in person social contacts, loneliness, the gig economy that many say is exploitative, etc, etc.
They sold us something that would make us closer, amd it ended up making us sadder and more isolated. I hope most of this is not news to anyone. It is technically possible, but very difficult, to reject all of this technology, especially since there are some genuinely useful and non harmful aspects.

By the way @Halloween Mike did you end up getting a data plan? ;)

me: "It's FINALLY summer!"
also me: "omg it's so hot and the sun is trying to kill me!"
That's why I keep saying that we should make it socially acceptable to say "I don't like Summer". It's not the Summers we grew up with, folks.

Not to brag about my ability to sense the zeitgeist, but you saw it on merb in my threads before the media talked about it:

Nostalgia for the 90's (see my nostalgia thread):

"Sur Reddit, un père déplore la manière dont sont parfois présentées les collections sur les sites des chaînes Garage et Urban Planet. "
Maybe you are the father in question! :p

It started with 80's nostalgia via Stranger Things and Cobra Kai. We're witnessing the dawn of 90's nostalgia. The world is healing.

I took my dog to the dog park. The usual cheerful chaos was in full swing with dogs zooming around, wrestling, and chasing each other with happy energy.
Then a big guy showed up with his young Belgian Shepherd. They lingered unusually long in the double-gate entry area before finally coming in.
Once inside, the play continued… until suddenly his dog got into a brief scuffle with another dog. There were some loud cries, but it was quickly broken up so nothing unusual for a busy dog park.

That’s when things got ugly. The guy completely lost it on the other dog’s owner. He started screaming (with plenty of F-bombs), threatening to “kick his ass” if he didn’t control his dog. He kept going on about how he refused to let his poor 6-month-old puppy get traumatized.

Watching the whole scene, it was painfully obvious this wasn’t really about the dogs. The owner was projecting his own insecurities and aggression onto his puppy.
He seemed to view any normal roughhousing as a threat to his dog’s (and maybe his own) fragile state.

It was a textbook case of someone using their pet as an extension of their ego.

It honestly reminded me of how some people raise kids projecting their fears, unresolved issues, and need for control onto their children instead of letting them experience normal life (and normal bumps along the way).

I use to get out of my bed once waken up. But I think I reached an age I enjoy rolling in it once up ...

My office neighbors (read the condo facing my window) are in swim suits on their balcony. Summer is here!
