It is hard to know what the damage you did without seeing it. Go down to Home Depot and ask the people there what you can do. Bring a shelf if possible. You may not have stripped it properly. Maybe all you have to do is strip it right and then put on a new coat of paint.

If the paint coating that you are trying to take off is too thick, put on the chemical stripper and wait 20 minutes. You can also try a heat gun to take off the paint. You only do the sanding when all the pain is off. Check for videos on Youtube. Let us know how it turns out.

Are you trying to sand it by hand? If yes, you'll probably need an electric sander and Coarse grade sandpaper.

My advice: Burn the place down and buy a new house.

Then again I know NOTHING about renovations so....

I'd worry more about sanding lead paint ,for dust particles.
More work taking it off the wall. this is probably a built in unit ,and not suspended cabinet.

Anytime you strip wood and then want to re-paint you must put a coat of primer on the wood first, the final paint will not adhere to wood without the primer and the finish will look terrible. The bulk of a great re-finishing job is in the preparation ( the stripping and sanding) if that part is done with care the end result (even done by a DIY'er) will look amazing.
