Retirement Plans/Ideas?

So I watched the Academy Award winning movie "Nomadland" on Hulu Monday night and it got me thinking about my retirement and what it might look like. The movie is about a bunch of characters who roam the US west in RVs and Vans, living in them, moving from place to place endlessly and never living under anyone's roof in any one spot. I heard that there is a website where you can actually rent RVs like an AirBnB. And of course I could buy a small one and then roam Canada and the USA, endlessly, or maybe for 6 months anyway before I get sick of it. Did anyone ever think about doing something like this?

I was also wondering, if I were to stop in Montreal on the way to Ontario and then Banff, Western Canada and Alaska before heading to California, whether there is an RV park or rest stop in Montreal? Can you imagine calling James at Euphoria, or Sammy at XO and asking them to send an escort to your RV? Anyone ever do this or have a conversation like this?

"Hey James, I need a girl, can you do an outcall to an RV?"

James: "Where is your RV?"

EB: "I am at an RV camp in Montreal."

James: "Which one?"

EB: "It the one that's located at _____________________."

James: "OK, so where is your RV parked?"

EB: "It's the beige and brown one on the edge of the lot."

James: "Tell you what, can you meet the driver at the entrance of the camp? There is an entrance, right?"

I wonder how you would even do something like that? Did any of you guys ever think about doing something like this? I mean, RV Nomads get to see escorts too, right?

I thought a lot about this over the past year. Working from home during the pandemic got me thinking that my "home" could be anywhere so why not hit the road and see how the rest of the country or countries lives. I'm far from retirement, but why not experience these great countries. Mobile homes are nicer than some 2 bedroom apartments here in Manhattan and a fifth of the price. They sell mobile homes with built in "toy haulers" to bring my Harley along with me. I could pick up a Ford F150, a fifth wheel mobile home, load up my Harley and golf clubs and take the show on the road. "Working from home" on the west coast means that I'm out of the office by 2 or 3 pm and on the golf course by 3:30 or driving down the pacific west highway. Summertime you can bounce around to the different national parks, in the winter you can stay in Florida, etc. For Montreal, I would stay somewhere near the border and drive my truck across for a little action every now and then. Absolutely something I would consider doing.

I am also far away from retirement-still in my 50s- but Nomadland got me thinking this could be fun, and escorts could also be incorporated into the lifestyle depending on where I am. Some of the used RVs I looked at are quite affordable. I could conceivably rent my condo out for a year, and then use the year to travel. Not just retirement but the idea of a sabbatical from work for 6 months or a year has also crossed my mind. I could go to Canada in the summer months and Florida and the US southwest in the winter months. The possibilities are endless. It was the movie Nomadland which started me thinking about this.

What got me thinking about this was the TV show Going RV and the way I discovered this show was when I cut the cord and found new channels/tv shows. So you could say that your other thread(s) have altered my trajectory in life. Lol.

I plan to move to a place that never seen snow, somewhere in the carribbean, South America, Asia etc. Will probably stay at a few places for 6 months to see how I enjoy the place.

You never know, I will finish off the TransMountain pipeline project then travel for a year to 4 different places, plan so far to pick a retirement spot. Will probably fly back during the summers to visit.

I was thinking of visiting Banff, perhaps you can serve as my guide. Many years ago I met a lady from Eleganza who raved about Banff. She did say she accidentally stumbled upon a very large Grizzly Bear which had its back to her, apparently, while eating berries. She got within 25 feet or so when she saw it, and then gradually backed away. Said it blended in with the foliage and she did not see it before she got too close.

I am hoping that having an experienced Canadian guide will prevent such an experience, although an American guide was killed by a 420 pound Grizzly Bear a couple of weeks ago near Yellowstone, and he appeared too know exactly where he was and what he was doing. Apparently the Grizzly was protecting a Moose carcass which was found 50 yards from the kill site:

Bears do not want to see you either, if you are taking a hike best to put bells on your backpack or on your boots to alert the animals, there are bear bell especially made for this. A common joke out west is the difference between black bear scat and grizzly scat is the grizzly scat has bells in it. Also, never run or jog in the woods, animals automatically think someting running is prey. Be more worried about cougars than bears, once you hear them they are attacking but cougar attacks are more rare than bear.
Bear spray should also be handy, it does work.

Bells and spray are generally good suggestions, but if you stumble upon a bear feeding on a carcass or else with and protecting its cubs, which are the two situations in which a bear attack is mostly likely to happen in the first place, bells/spray is not likely going to cause a Grizzly bear to run. In those situations, its programming is to fight and defend turf or protect its young. I note that the unfortunate guide who was killed in the Yellowstone did have spray with him. He just stumbled into a Moose carcass defense situation and the bear charged and overwhelmed him and savagely beat his head.

Where you would come in, aside from providing experienced guiding services for which I would throw you a few bucks, is to shoot the bear dead with your rifle if the bells and spray do not work, as they likely wouldn't if we stumbled upon the bear with cubs or bear eating/defending an animal carcass. In effect, you would be bear insurance. Plus you are likely to get some beer out of it, although not too many because we do not want to significantly impair your aim in shooting the rifle.

Short story, A surveyor on my crew way surveying by a waterfall, next thing he knew he was knocked down from behind, he was on his back and saw a grizzly coming towards him, by the time he got the bear spray off his vest and pulled the pin he could have touched the bears face, after a full blast in face and mouth the grizzly ran away. Between a mom and cubs yes, you could be bear food.

My buddy who is in his 50's does 6 months in Florida and another 6 months in Montreal at nudist resorts. He has friends at each place and seems to be enjoying it. Each place is around $2000 for the entire 6 months! Plus he saves on laundry!!

^^^^^ $2,000 for 6 months? What would be included in the fee? I checked on camping ( RV ) stalls in Florida and the average prices are around $600 a month just for the stall, figured I would spend a winter there as I have use of a 34 foot fifth wheel with a toy hauler.
Should be some great fishing around here.

If I was going to retire anywhere in Florida, or spend 6 months anywhere- and I have traveled extensively throughout this State and my family has owned property there (Gulf Coast) since the 1970s- without any question it would be Key West. It's an awesome place and the weather is awesome, the whole year. If you like fishing, tarpon fishing is de rigeuer down there. Ernest Hemingway tarpon fished all the time when he lived there, and he also wrote some of his best books while he lived in Key West, including A Farewell To Arms, if you read that one. Tennessee Williams lived in a hotel that I drank in the bar of, and I think he wrote A Streetcar Named Desire while living there. That hotel has a rooftop bar that has the best views in Key West. I forget the name of it but the locals all know it.

Not sure if you ever heard of Jimmy Buffet, but he lived in Key West in the 1970s and wrote the song Margaritaville about Key West. You may have heard it, Jimmy now lives on a boat but he stops at the original Margaritaville pub and restaurant on Duval Street every month to "check on things", they told me. Holy Shit Sol, be careful, that's a black bear and if it's hungry they are much more likely to predatory attack humans than Grizzlies. That one does look reasonably well fed.

Who knew retirement could have its pitfalls ... luckily there is enough information on this thread to help avoid being mauled by a marauding bear ...... by the way that’s a mighty cool pic you posted .... these beautiful curious beasts tend to be territorial in their habitat and when they have cubs it could be fatal although attacks are still extremely rare I would say .... that one probably didn’t see you as a source of food
