A lover of jazz who became one of the great rock n roll drummers. I thought he sometimes looked out of place with the rest of the Stones. Never a flashy dresser or flashy drummer. Yet always looked dapper and rocked steady. He was the rock that the Stones needed when the rest of them had their squabbles. Married to the same woman for 57 years . His secret to a strong relationship - “Because I’m not really a rock star. I don’t have all the trappings of that. Having said that, I do have four vintage cars and can’t drive the bloody things. I’ve never been interested in doing interviews or being seen."

Funniest Stones story of Charlie's from USAToday -

Richards recalled, Jagger and he were drunk in Amsterdam and came back to the hotel early in the morning, and Jagger called Watts. “He said something on the phone like ‘Where's my drummer?’” Richards said.

Later, there was a knock on the door, “and there's Charlie, dressed in A Savile Row suit, tie, hair done, shaved, cologne. He walks across to Mick, grabs him and says, ‘Never call me your drummer again.’” Then Watts hit Jagger with a right hook, said Richards, who tells the story in "According to the Rolling Stones" and his memoir.

Some recollections of the event have Watts adding, "You're my (expletive) singer."

"The bottom line is, don't annoy me. It's not something I'm proud of doing and if I hadn't been drinking I would never have done it," Watts said.

Here's to you Charlie -
"Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the lowly of birth
Raise your glass to the good and the evil
Let's drink to the salt of the earth"

Many thanks to BBW Hunter for starting a new thread on Charlie Watts...Charlie Watts deserves his own thread!

I am repeating what I already published in the other general music thread on Charlie Watts!

RIP Charlie Watts!...Really sad to see him go!...He fit perfectly into the band as did all other members! Unlike many short-lived defunct rock'n roll'n bands the Stones had great chemistry!

The first time I ever saw Charlie Watts was on CBC in the video clip "It's only Rock'n Roll"...where he was drowning in soap bubbles! LoL!

...and yes that's no mistake...the 3rd guitarist (playing the red & white Fender Strat guitar) is the great Mick Taylor..."It's only Rock'n Roll" was the last Rolling Stones album to feature MickTaylor!
