There is always the initial machine purchase cost but the same as a car purchase, after X years it is yours with just a little maintainance.
Time for young kids to get into robotic repairs ( probably a different term ), programmers are everywhere.
As for trusting a robots decision, from what I have seen for sentences to some criminals I would love to see a robot judge. Probably would be better to see the min sentences go up a lot.
Kind of hard to bribe or threaten a robot judge or lawyer also.

You talk about software as if it was a tangible asset. This type of technology is not meant to be purchased, it is meant to be rented. (Software as a service). I can imagine having a software like salesforce.com (lawyerforce.com) Where I can ask a bunch of legal questions for 24.99 per month, compared to paying 200$ per hour.

Lawyers will then start to throw in the usual bull* we hear from people who have been phased out by machines "We can give you a customized service"

I wouldn't want to see robot judges, they would be merciless and way too technical.

.

I know about rental software, for our GPS processing software we Rent a key to make a program work, cost is very high per year but it is a tool which we need and is constantly updated. Lawyer programs could be the same.... and it costs far more than $24.99 a month, try $10,000.00 a year, still a bargain for what it does.
For myself I would prefer a merciless judge, just my opinion.

It all depends on the volume of people accessing the service. There are software licences that go for about 100k. That software is very specialized used to make simulations of electrical networks with live detailed information. That's something not everyone can use. On the other hand, legal services are a far more common. It could be very profitable with multiple subscriptions.

Ross is built over Watson and IBM is already giving out that technology for peanuts

The cost of building something on top of that can't be that much. I have made a few apps using it and it's really quite impressive.

between you and "them"
Agreed, but I must admit I had "stagiaires" that needed some of that intelligence, albeit artificial...Law school does not make a smart person out of a lobotomized idiot...or of one that goes into law because they are bad in maths and want to be "rich"(as you know ALL lawyers are)!!!
