Victory Day in Russia is its biggest public holiday, commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two in 1945.

This year on the 9 May occasion, Russia has dismissed speculation that it will declare all-out war in Ukraine in the coming days as "nonsense".

Western officials have speculated that President Vladimir Putin could use the Victory Parade to announce an escalation of military action.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, said there was no truth to the rumours "at all".

Russia commemorates one of the most important events on its national calendar — Victory Day — marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Putin claimed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had been necessary because the West was “preparing for the invasion of our land, including Crimea.”

Evoking that victory in his speech Monday, Putin urged the Russian army toward victory in Ukraine, saying there was a duty to remember those who defeated Nazism.

Hitler committed suicide, why not Putin?
Hitler was cornered. Germany was getting squeezed as enemy armies were invading from both sides; Berlin was hours from falling into the hands of the Red Army. Two of his top aides, Goring and Himmler, had already deserted him and were trying to negotiate deals with the Allies. He was trapped with no way out. Putin is hardly in such desperate circumstances. No invading army is coming into Russia for the time being. He can drag this out for a long time if there is no NATO army threatening to encircle Moscow.
Also, unlike Hitler, he has nuclear weapons.

Around the corner
What they don’t show you about red square is that on the left hand side of it is an enclosed shopping center that rivals anything in Hollywood, with the most expensive designer stores all lined up.
Russians shopping there flaunt their wealth much more than anywhere in the world. Endless jewelry is on display but it is hard to tell who is the oligarch as the bodyguards tend to look like Mr T also.
Wonder if they are still able to shop for all the toys they so enjoy and have become accustom to or are they feeling a bit of the crunch and sanctions imposed by the West.

Finland making application for NATO - country of about 6 million, but if all of its reserves are activated, then it can field a force of 900K men. One of Putin's worst nightmares.

Vladimir Putin has been spotted watching Russia’s Victory Day parade with a thick green blanket across his legs.

Ukrainian soldiers fire mortar rounds at targets in Ukraine's Kharkiv region.

Kharkiv region has experienced intense bombardment, as Russia renews a push in the east of the country.
Over the past week, Ukrainian troops recaptured several villages in Kharkiv region from Russian troops.

Three more civilians were killed in Kharkiv and three in the Luhansk region, its governor Serhiy Gaidai said. It was not immediately possible to verify the reports.

May 9 marks Victory Day in both Russia and Ukraine, the 77th anniversary of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender in World War Two.
Ukraine is not holding any public events for May 9 for fear of shelling.
