Remember Oksana Bayul? When she won the Gold she was a hotty, now she's just scary. Take a look at their Gymnastic/Swimming teams, when they are young they are really cute but when they grow up, YIKES! I think a lot of them bulk up as they get a little older and lose the facial definition, and curves all over their bodies that made them so pleasing to the eye. Others train themselves so hard they start to look like men, Yecchhh, and lose their femininity.
Martina Navritilova, who admittedly wasn't a beauty in the first place, wasn't nearly as horrid however when she was young. Something about age just isn't kind to those Eastern bloc women. Kournikova stopped playing tennis because she wanted to concentrate on what she is really famous for so she has devoted herself to looking good and perhaps that has something to do with her retaining her beauty? If she kept playing she may have very well lost her glamour to some degree.
Lets not forget that not only are these girls young and therefore prettier than their older counterparts due to firmer bodies, youthful skin and complexions but they are dressed up and made up by professionals who are paid handsomely to make guys like us interested in watching girls hit a ball back and forth over a net and pretend we are interested in the sport.
Ever see a Hollywood starlet without her makeup and hair-do? Especially after a long night of partying walking around in sweats with those big sunglasses? Thats because they don't want you to see those photos and realize that they aren't so beautiful without all the fake shit they use to make them appeal to us. People who haven't seen such photos would be amazed at how frightening some of them look.
Its a big ad campaign to some extent. The legends of the game have not been beauty queens. Chris Evert was a good player and very cute but couldn't carry Martinas' jockstrap. Steffi is cute in her own way but damn that nose is huge and she is a bit too muscular in my opinion which is a result of her training so hard for years in an effort to be a great player which proves her priority was winning, not looking good for the camera.
At some point I predict Maria will allocate her Tennis career to the back burner at the advice of her "handlers" who will tell her to capitalize on her most important "assets" before her beauty starts to fade. In essence she'll have a choice between totally busting her ass trying to become a Tennis legend or living the life of a Cover girl. Seeing as she will make money much more easily as a Cover girl and becoming a Tennis legend would be infinitely harder she'll make the easy choice and take the money. But if she does surprise me and redoubles her efforts to stay on top of the Womens tour I fully expect her looks to suffer to some extent. Thats not saying any of us wouldn't date her, just that she will not look nearly as good in ten years at age 28-29 as she does today as a teenager.
