This afternoon I saw 2 cops in front of a cop station, onle was instructing the other in the use of a laser speed detection device. What the fuck is going on? Are they training all 5000 skumbags to get on the roads to rob us?

..........One of our local officials pulled him over. They then arrested him for drunk driving. He wanted a breathalyzer right there, but they wouldn't give it to him. They took him to the station. He blew a .00, but he still has to pay a whopping fee for his car being towed.
Surely that can be contested, and the cops made to pay the towing charge.

Everytime someone gets hit or killed by a drunk driver, the first thing people say is "where were the cops?" Same thing when a car gets run over by a runaway, speeding car. The cops have a job to do & i applaud them for it. Sure, there are a few power-hungry bad apples who go overboard & give the rest of the cops a bad name, but you have these types in every line of work.
It's the classic case of 'you're damn if you do,you're damn if you don't''.Same thing about public security, security on campus, schools, malls, hospitals ect...nobody wants to be policed, yet whenever something happens people cry ''where's security???''.

The problem here is that the Emporer Mayor Tremblay goes and hires over 100 sows to patrol for TRAFFIC violations. Not to cut down on violent crimes, robberies, street gangs..... In the interim these fine examples of pork by-products will tell you if your house is robbed to just call your insurance. Same thing for your car, etc. So, you could lose tens of thousands of dollars of goods and they won't do anything since they're too busy sitting by a street corner stopping cars for doing rolling stops, or blocking intersections.

Don't get me wrong I get pissed that the drivers in Montreal are becoming more useless every day but I think it would be more effective if:

1 - half these people are hired to actually do police duties, not meter maid duties
2 - These meter maids would patrol the streets where drivers are whipping along at 120 km/hr on a 70 km/hr route (ex: Decarie)
3 - These meter maids would patril the streets where drivers are going 50 km/hr in a 70 km/hr zone (ex: left lane of Decarie).

By the way not sure what happened by the usual 4 PM pig patrol at th ecorner of Wellington & Bridge by the Victoria Bridge is no longer there. I wonder if the Port Authority (who must own the land as they stack shipping containers there) told them to get off private land. If so then GOOD GOING to the PA. :D

I am not so sure that a person getting hit by a speeding car, or an accident caused by a drunk driver is any less a violent crime. Drivers here treat pedestrians like second class citizens, even in the middle of extreme weather conditions, apparently, for Montrealers, that 20 second wait is too long, and would prefer to practically run you over while you cross the street.

We also have the most unfriendly crossings I have ever encountered. I love Westmount, but having to wait 2 lights, just to cross Victoria street, and then 2 more if I want to cross Sherbroooke as well... in sleet, while warmed up cars zip on by is ridiculous. Oh, don't get me started on this... lol!

I would be happy if the police traffic control cops would just focus on streets where pedestrians are. Don't waste time on the Decarie, on getting Montrealers to follow traffic rules on the highways, or autoroutes, treat those like the autobauhn - Enter at your own Risk.

Apparently you guys have never been to New York City. Try crossing Madison Avenue or Park Avenue in midtown some time. Most of the taxi drivers in New York City treat those roads like it was their private NASCAR racetrack. Nothing I have seen in Montreal in my many walks through the downtown compares with what I have seen the equally numerous walks I have taken in Manhattan. I have had several occasions of nearly being killed by a racing taxi in NYC, never in Montreal.

Ridiculous. So crashing into other cars does not count, only when you hit pedestrians? Sorry but that doesn't fly for me when I have seen enough accidents on Decarie because of idiot drivers flying along. The cops shoud station themselves especially on these thoroughfares since control of speeding is supposedly one of the reasons why Tremblay hired these sows to begin with.

Maybe the pedestrians need to actually stop jaywalking or crossing in the middle of the streets first and foremost. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a mother with a baby stroller rushing across busy city streets when she is 1/2 a block from a corner with a stop sign or light. Then there are the hundreds of idiots yakking on their cell phones as they are crossing street corners not even looking at the fact the light is red.

Yea, that is what I said

The highways are not a necessity to get from point A to point B, and EVERYONE has to go at some point through city streets. If police can focus on getting the ruthless, careless and drunk drivers off the street on city streets, then it follows that those cars couldn't enter the highway anyhow.

Quebecs "no-fault" is one way that motorists are not detered from driving unsafely. As said on the website attached, I, too, feel that crossing jay-walking is actually SAFER than crossing at the light! I cannot say how many times I have had to jump back because a car comes for his turn on the green light, without any consideration for pedestrians.

2 of my friends mothers were killed by motorists. One just 2 years ago, she was hit from behind and died instantly. She was walking along the shoulder of the road. The guy who hit her was known for dangerous driving, and will never be made to pay for what he did. My best friend is having her first child - and her mother is no longer with us. The other was about 5 years ago. She was crossing on a cross walk - apparently, these can only be seen by pedestrians. as I have tried crossing these funny marked spots as well, without any luck!

I'm sorry for the fact that you have had 2 people experience death in this manner. It still does not change the fact that pedestrians as well need to stop crossing where they should not and respect the lights as much as motorists.

Reality is that more people are victims of crimes such as home invasions, robberies, rape, murder, street gangs than car-related activities that can deemed a 'violent crime'. These are where the cops are most needed to do their duties. Unfortunately they are only tough enough to hand out tickets...

In any regards the addition of all these officers is nothing but a cash grab for the city and has nothing to do with the safety of anyone. The crackdown on jaywalkers will be next so they can get more money in the coffers for the Emporer's new clothes.

I for one, am for the death penalty for blocking an intersection.

Actually, it is not the reality

"In 2005 there were 35 murders in Montreal compared to 54 fatalities caused by motor vehicles"

Unless you are talking about the TOTAL of all wrong doings.

Ok, you win on one. What about the others?

How many robberies?
How many rapes?
How many beatings by street gangs?

These incidents scar the victims for the remainder of their lives and many end up wishing that they were dead instead.

Out of the 54 fatalities (I assume you mean pedestrians being run down) how many were actually because of careless pedestrians? More than 1 I am sure.

Sorry but I prefer to focus police on more than just vehicular incidents.

Stop, you're both right. We'd all like to see less crime (well, okay, maybe Jeff Reardon will disagree if he comes to town!) but the traffic toll is also unacceptable. How about having the police do their job and enforce all laws concerning public safety - whether crime-related or traffic-related?

If only I knew...
Tremblay could hire and affect 1000 cops to traffic, they'll never patrol Décarie, nor will they patrol "Métropolitain", 640, 20... All these are under Provincial Police jurisdiction. A Montréal cop on Décarie is like any citizen and isn't allowed to distribute tickets.

The only 2 other places I've seen peoples driving worst than Montréal are NY City area and Paris, in France.

In these places, so many drivers act as if they're alone on the streets and as if the roads belong to them, it can make driving quite stressful.

You should check out puerto plata in dominican republic where it's legal to drive drunk and also place like manilla (especially in pasay area) in philippines and about Paris maybe you should go pratice 1-2 days at nuns island and you gonna find it easier with all the circle etc...

Tax grab.

The lazy cops only got off their fat asses to issue tickets because the politicians ordered them to go out and get money off innocent drivers in the street.

Nah, it's cause they hired a binch of losers who probably point guns the wrong way and said "We'll pay you and give you agood pension at taxpayers expense".

metoo4, you are correct I did not realize that Montreal sows can't intrude on highways as that is for the QPP. Guess they all need their kickbacks...

Innocent drivers? You mean like the prick that ran the red light at the corner where I was waiting to cross this morning? That happens all the time... drivers aren't innocent in Montreal - ignorant, maybe, but not innocent.

..and a cop was there waiting for him, right? Oh no they sit by street corners and stop signs, slower traffic.
