And Begin ain't one of them.....

Begin may be a nice guy, but if you look at his Plus -Minus Statistics you will see that he is -5 this year.

In other words, the Montreal Canadians play better when Begin is sitting on the bench....or in Dallas.

If you want to be around nice francophones....go to a bar.

If you want to win hockey games....get the best players available.

And Begin ain't one of them.....

Except that +/- is probably the most useless stat in sports for many reasons.

Here, using Steve Begin's +/- stats, I'm going to prove to you that you are wrong (or that this stat is useless, or that you can draw whatever conclusion you like using it):

If you only look at team losses, Begin played in 10 losses and he is -1. That's the best on the team along with Latendresse (-1 in 14 losses). Therefore sitting Begin seems to have little merit, since he does't seem to cause losses and other players do much worse than he does in the minus column when the team loses.

Begin shouldn't even be in the NHL. There are so many other players with more skill who aren't in the big time. He isn't even very tough!

So you must be one of those guys who called Bob Gainey a genius, after Matthew Schne

So you must be one of those guys who called Bob Gainey a genius, after Matthew Schneider scored a goal in his second game with the team.....despite the fact that he was on the ice for five of the goals the other team scored.....

"So you must be..."

Does believing +/- stats mean something give you psychic powers too?

No I am just on of those guys who watched him play many games for Val D'Or in Junior and with Hamilton in the AHL and couldn't believe this guy was in the NHL.

Why Begin was traded......next up: Dandenault

Gainey's plan was to free up some room to get a top 2 center and/or a top 4 defenceman prior to next week's trade deadline. By getting rid of a centerman (Begin) that wasn't playing anyway, he opened up a spot for a possible centerman who could help the team. He's also expected to trade Dandenault & that's why Janik was obtained in the trade for Begin, in case the trade does happen & Gainey might not be able to obtain a top defenceman in return....Janik would be available to take up Dandenault's spot on defence if ever there's a need for it.

Janik cleared waivers & he's now in Hamilton.

Lecavalier

Vincent Lecavalier to Habs for Hamrlik, Higgins, and Dandenault OR 2 nd round pick OR Chipchura.

You heard the prediction here first! :)

Hamrlik goes along with $5 mil salary cap. Schneider makes Roman expendable. Hamrlik started career in Tampa, would be main D-man in Tampa.

Higgins goes cuz Tampa needs top 6 forward in return. Higgins skates ++, but misses open nets.
Chipchura may go cuz Tampa needs a centre.
Dandenault asked for trade, veteran player would fit in Tampa.

Vinnie has long-term contract, but Tampa is in financial difficulty. Vinny could end up with a major contract on an insolvent team, like Mario Lemieux with Pens a few years back. Bye bye T-Bay!

Vinny L = big talented playmaker and scorer centre, coveted by Montreal since the Beliveau glory days! BTW he is from Montreal area! Vinny has matured in attitude, now a proven NHL star.

With Vinny, Lang becomes expendable as UFA. Look for PK Subban or Ryan McDonagh to fill D-man spot next year for Habs.

Gainey as GM could pull this off. :D

Koivu, Lecavalier, Plekanec, Lapierre as Habs centres.........vet, youth, talent, more size down the middle.

I would do it in a heart beat. but it will never happen. you will see that there will be no more move's by montreal. montreal will get rid of dandenault for nothing.

Well, i hope it's the last time we hear such nonsense here. If you're Tampa's GM, why the hell would you give away your franchise player for The Three Stooges & a roll of tape?

Hamrlik has been in the year for 50 years & he's way overpaid ($5.5 million per year with another couple of years to go), meaning they wouldn't want to take on his contract anyway. Higgins is already a has-been who's never blossomed like some predicted he would. He also has a reputation as a big boozer. Dandenault? Why the hell would a team like Tampa who definitely won't make the playoffs want some excess baggage who'll be gone as soon as the season ends (he's an unrestricted free agent). What do you do with the present players on your current roster in order to make room for these three stooges?

You'd add either a 2nd rounder OR Chipchura?? My, you're so generous!!
Didn't you forget that Gainey just gave away that 2nd rounder in the Schneider trade? Oh right, you forgot. So it'll have to be a future career 3rd rounder (at best!) in Kyle Chipchura.

In Lecavalier, you have a franchise player who's the face of your franchise. He's established in the community & does a lot of charitable work during the off-season. He loves the city & has never asked to be traded. Even though he hasn't said so publicly, he very likely would object to a trade to Mtl for reasons we've already discussed over the past years (too much media pressure, fan pressure, too much being in the public eye, etc).

And you'd trade your franchise player for a bunch of jokers who won't help your financial situation much, will definitely not improve your team & which one or two of them won't even be with your team come next season?? Don't think so, Knobby!

Question for Knobby: How the hell does this trade improve your if you're the Tampa GM?

There was ongoing talk today among media personalities that Begin's departure is what might have caused the lid to blow off in the dressing room. He was, according to many, very respected among veterans & they couldn't believe Carbo had swore not to play Begin for the rest of the season. From what i've gathered, his trade to Dallas caused a mini-rebellion within the dressing room & the team's veterans approached Gainey with their beefs in regards to the coach, which is what led to today's firing.
