IIRC, tertiary syphilis symptoms can make one go crazy or change personalities. It's believed advanced syphilis greatly contributed to Idi Amin's madness.

Got tested recently and still lucky enough not to have been exposed to syphilis, despite the CDC saying there's been an uptick of cases in my area.
