I wonder why they couldn't work the magic they work in Canada?

Tim who?

Perhaps Americans don't know what the hell Tim Horton's is. The name "Dunkin Donnuts" is idiot proof, but the name "Tim Horton's" is not. In all honesty, I had to google the name to figure-out what they're all about.

Krispy Creme = Kirspy Crap

I think they made the same mistake as Krispy Kreme. Krispy Kreme was all marketing extravaganza and when the smoke cleared, their product was not all that great.

Years ago when they were opening shops around Montreal they had a promotion give away of a dozen dough nuts. I got a box and took a bite of one in the car.
It was sugar and flour fried up into a heart clogging device. I quickly flung them out the car window for the giant white sky rodents in the parking lot.

Everyone will laugh but when i do drink coffee it's from McDonald's.

Was just about to post the same. I would pick McD's over Tim Horton's any day and did when I was in Mtl recently. I drink their's black.

I drink strong black coffee at home. I drink DD's coffee every day I work but with cream and sugar. I guess you could say I'm more of a cream and sugar drinker there as I think DD's coffee by itself sucks.

But I don't like Tim Horton's any way you serve it. Second Cup is way better in Mtl.

The CEO of Tim Horton's was shown the door as announced earlier today. I think the brand has a magic aura in Canada that doesn't translate in the states - and not his fault.

I think Tim Horton's prices may be a little cheaper than Dunkin Donuts. I like DD's coffee better. The menu selection for sandwiches and stuff is bigger at TH's and they generally have quicker service.

But bottom line is that I think people go to where they are accustomed to and it's hard to break that habit. The only way to break it is to open up stores near your competitor and beat them at customer service and quality, and be willing to lose money for a while before you turn the tide.

Regional taste. When Americans taste TH doughnuts they go crazy for them, but they will not be good customers in the long term. Its just like Crispy Cream doing well at first, but then fizzling out at the end.

Is it true that salt is still used to make good restaurant and/or donut shop coffee?

I recently read something about how the old style coffee makers would give better results with a pinch of salt and some egg shells. This was before drip coffee makers existed, so it's a type of coffee maker that is used on the stove top or otherwise I suppose.

This is all way before my time. Anybody with experience care to enlighten us?

The egg-shell/salt story is true. I would bet that most of the big chains put salt in their coffee pre-mixed pouches. It is cheap and so easy. It is a sneaky way to lure customers. DD has really upped their game in the states. They'll be back in Canada.
