I travel frequently and sometimes need to bring my laptop with me.
I have never had problems, but I know that sometimes customs will boot the laptop and inspect it. Worse, I've seen reports of them copying your hard disk for later inspection!!!
Due to this, I only use Firefox with maximum privacy settings (clear private info on shut down) on the laptop. I also keep all my important info on an encrypted disk. This is a "must" in my case, as I may have confidential business info on me at any given time.
I use http://www.truecrypt.org/ it's free, open source, easy to use, and has "denyability".
