UFC 69 Serra VS St-Pierre

Good morning everyone,

It's been a couple of months since GSP completely dominated Matt Hughes in UFC 67 (I still get goosebumps thinking about it), what a great display of control, patience and skill! GSP was scheduled to defend his title against Serra in UFC 68 but the fight was re-scheduled (to my dismay) to tonight due to a training injury. What is your take on the outcome of tonight's fight? I am rooting for GSP (obviously) and I am very confident he will dispose of Serra (not that he isn't a skilled fighter) quite easily. I hope I am not the only MMA (mixed martial arts for those who don't know) enthusiast on this board...:D

Cheers,
D.

Upset, that was a mammoth upset!! I was utterly and completely shocked to see Serra knockout GSP. Have to say, I'm happy for Serra, he's a classy guy but I'm also sad to see GSP lose because he's by far one of the classiest, nice guys of the sport and I'm sure he'll be back to reclaim his title soon.

BTW, there was another thread dedicated to fights / MMA but I can't find it.

What a huge shocker!! this will easily be the biggest upset in sports this year, i think the odds were like a 1000 to 1 in Vegas, my jaw simply dropped in shock when i saw what happened and i couldn't believe it, it was dead silence in the bar that i was in, but as K said Serra is a real classy guy and GSP was classy as usual in defeat with no excuses.

PS- 9 out 10 times GSP kicks his ass, expect a rematch and we all know what happened the last time GSP had a rematch.:)

"BTW, there was another thread dedicated to fights / MMA but I can't find it."

-Thats because it was a thread that was started by Ziggy Montana and was deleted when he left the boards briefly before coming back.

Huge Upset

I'm speechless. I was also in a bar watching the fight, the whole place went silent then all I could hear was the same line coming out of everyones mouth... "What the f***"?! Serra looked so confident coming into the fight and so relaxed once it started, a little too much imho. Makes me kinda wonder... GSP totally dominating Matt Hughes just to be beat down by Serra afterwards? This doesn't add up.

Will Serra fight GSP first, or Matt Hughes? I would hate to see Hughes fight Serra, win, and then duck GSP forever. I am glad Don King is not involved in UFC.

Wow, talk about a major upset, well this is it !!!!! Even though Serra, gave GSP the beat down, let's still look at this properly........They are both at the top of their game and one mistake can kill you in the sport "literally" And that is what happened.....GSP slipped on the matt, and Serra took full advantage of it, he came rushing in and thre his heavy hands which caught GSP.....IMHO, GSP is the best fighter in his weight class and will be back even stronger for the next round..

Yes, that's what happens when you get hit in the head!! MMA fighting is the most unpredictable sport there is, anyone can be beaten on any day, Saturday night was just Serra's night.

Preferably, I'd like to see Serra give GSP a rematch before fighting Hughes.

IMHO I think that Matt Hughs could easily take either GSP or Serra. When Hughes lost the the belt to GSP it was obvious that he was trying to stand with GSP and that is a big mistake. Matt Hughes ground and pound game is second to none and if he would have stuck to that when fighting GSP I think it would have ended differently. The only way we will see a GSP/Matt Hughes rematch is after Hughes kicks Serra's ass.

Nothing keeps you from starting a "New Improved Baseball are for Wimps: the Fight Thread" thread.

I'm not a big MMA fan, but I'm sure a lot of serious money was made (by a very small number of people) on this fight.

Hmmmmm!!!!

I'll let you folks come to your own conclusions... http://www.dailymotion.com/related/2783370/video/x1o34r_gsp-clipped2/1 My conclusion is he didn't slip, he was going to put a knee down after Serra's fist went clearly over his head but then he went for unstable run. I was kind of unsure and reluctant to post my entire feelings about this fiasco but not so much now after reading Ben Dovers post and watching this video. I am very dissapointed.

I am not so sure I buy the fight-throwing theory. UFC appears to be 100% controlled by its owners, who are mega-wealthy casino owners who do UFC because they like it. They seem less likely to pollute their own creation just to make a few bucks, and they also seem to be in good position to be aware that someone else might try and to prevent it.

I was thinking that perhaps Serra would be given a relatively easy first defense (like GSP was, they thought), while GSP and Hughes would fight to see who would face the winner of that fight for the title.

UFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson...Sat. May 26

Saturday night May 26th in Vegas.

I'm going to go with Liddell again. Even though Jackson has beaten Liddell in the past, Jackson hasn't impressed me at all since his UFC debut. Liddell by KO in 3.

I will go the opposite way and take Jackson by TKO, Liddell will show his age some day and his interview on "good morning Texas" where he was stuttering and slurring wasn't a good sign, when asked by the interviewer who he would like to fight next he responded by saying Tommy Morrison.

Rampage totally destroys Liddell!!!

Thank you Rampage Jackson my man because of you i will be in Montreal next week sp'ing and i just hope that the money SK lost won't affect his sp'ing.:p

-Over all a great card with great fights with some major upsets, this is about the 10th major upset in MMA this year and it seems that being a heavy favourite is a jinx in this sport.
