I've used Verizon for years, I think the Travel Pass is a relatively new feature. I actually just added it to my plan a few days ago. Just to be clear, the $2/day fee is only for days you use your phone in Canada, and the 24 hour period starts when you first call, text or use data. Travel Pass covers Canada and Mexico for $2 per day and most other countries around the world for $10/day. Seems like a great deal for people who only travel outside of the US once in a while.

I had a bad experience with my AT&T GoPhone on my last trip to Montreal in late September. It seems that I could send text messages but not receive them. I didn't realize that I wasn't receiving txts for several days, which greatly interfered with setting up dates......grrrr, I had the $45/month GoPhone plan which was supposed to include Canada text messaging at 25cents per msg sent and 20 cents for every msg received.. It had worked fine on my previous trip to Montreal in July, As soon as I crossed the border back into the USA, suddenly I got like 27 accumulated text messages from agencies and indys.....grrrrrrr.... I visited the AT&T store where I bought the phone and they didn't have a clue what the problem was. I then went onto the AT&T Community Forum and the company expert there was stumped also. I had to show him the web page that described Canadian roaming. BTW Rogers provides roaming service to AT&T phones in Canada....I concluded that Rogers had changed their support of AT&T and didn't tell anyone... anyone else have a similar recent experience?
I'm now planning my next Montreal trip for late December, and I want to get cellphone txting working properly before I go. Anyone have some new recommendations? I'm kinda leaning towards dropping the GoPhone and getting a cheap T-Mobile smartphone.

why don't you get the AT&T Canada Roaming Bonus plan? It's free. Rogers provides the roaming service.
I had the same issue during my previous visits, I couldn't get out of AT&T contract soon enough. I recently switched to cricket and I am very happy with their service in Canada (used in Montreal and Toronto). Their $50 ($45 if you do autopay) plan has free voice, text and data in north america (mexico and Canada). T-Model is also a good option with free data roaming in lots of countries but they do charge for voice calls and SMS messages.

I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile years ago. I would always need to notify AT&T as I approached the border and add a temporary extra program. With T-Mobile I pay nothing extra for anything while in Canada. The coverage is automatic. I have needed to put in a passcode to check US voicemails while in Canada but that is a minor issue.
