I was under the impression that you could indeed take the train from the Airport (Dorval) into downtown. Isn't there a shuttle bus that runs between the nearby train station at Dorval to the terminal?

From what I gather, the train never reach's the airport...although its pretty closeby...and from what ive deduced its not possible to board a train at from the location near the airport and head downtown. There is a shuttle bus, but no train or subway. For such a large city as Montreal, its shocking that no direct access downtown is available....political pressure to keep the taxi's running?

An interesting (possible) option would be to subway it to the nearest metro station....then taxi the rest of the way in/out.

The main purpose of this thread was to provide information to those who have 'free time' on their hands...ie a long layover or a flight to a certain area. Say you wanted to fly into new york, finding out that newark has a connection might save you some bucks. Same with flying into Frankfurt...the rail system in germany can easily take you from frankfurt to Cologne or Dusseldorf in a matter of hour.

Spending the taxpayers money....to extend the subway to Laval...but not to the airport. Why? Has to do with the money to the cab/bus companies. Make it easy and cheap to get to the airport and the city is losing money and tax's. 15 bucks for a one way bus ride to downtown??? Why shouldnt it be a buck subway ride there and back?

Well, public transit projects are often outrageously expensive and take years to complete.

Laval commuters probably pay more in taxes than tourists, so they probably need it more than the tourists.

But, maybe now that the Laval service is done, an airport link will be next.

PS. BTW, going from LGA or JFK to EWR isn't so easy or cheap. The Newark AirTrain only goes to NY Penn Station. From there, you would need to catch bus/subway to get to LGA or JFK. Or, try some of these combinations, all of which require multiple transfers:

A shuttle van can be reserved, but i've heard that can cost over $30.

Found a link from Viarail that states you can ride the train into and out of downtown to the airport.

For travellers making the connection between Montréal and Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, the fare is $12 (before taxes). You must purchase this fare from a VIA Rail ticket agent.

But searching on the viarail train system for both inbound and return, it states: There was no train found matching your search criteria. For more information, please send an e-mail or contact VIA Rail directly at 1-888-VIA-RAIL.

Hmmm .... thanks for the info!

It looks like you'd have to buy the ticket in person when you get there.

There is a free shuttle from the terminal to the train station.

More info is needed on times (24 hours? late night/early morning hours? how frequent is the shuttle and train?).

Then a conclusion can be drawn as to whether this is better than L'Aerobus.

This is not true. From JFK, you can take the monorail to the subway system (there are several lines depending on where you are going to in Manhattan). You only have only to make one switch. It's best to consult someone on the monorail to see where you need to get off and which train you need to get.

From Newark, you take the monorail to NJ Transit or Amtrak to Penn Station in Newark. From the Newark train station you go into midtown Penn Station New York.

LGA does not have a good subway connection at this time. From LaGuardia, you are really close to midtown, so a cab or shuttle bus would not be expensive.
