Of the few times I've visited Montreal, I've seen large protests support Palestine every time, which for the longest time have been squashed in the US where it matters. It's not to say Canada is not important, but it's the US that supplies Israel with weapons, aircraft, intelligence, midair fueling and counter missile defense as well as a veto power in the UN and billions of dollars. AIPAC and other groups have had a stranglehold on establishment politics on both sides for decades. However, yesterday we saw the first major crack where every Democratic primary candidate endorsed by NYC Mayor Mamdani won with Israel being the major issue. This is an issue that for the first time has become toxic to candidates with large swaths of jewish constituents voting for these candidates, too. The rhetoric to equate antizionism with antisemitism is beginning to fall apart and the establishment, corporatist incumbent Democratic leadership is shocked. The fact that these candidates are also all socialists is the cherry on top.
