Who Should the next Canadiens Captain Be?

Like Doc holliday posted Gionta and Gorges were the true leaders of the team. In fact even before they chose Gionta as captain Gorges was my choice and back then many didn't understand what i saw in that average defenceman..
But what really bothers me is why cant they just let the players vote..???????
What could be more democratic or representative than a secret vote..?

Next year just give it to Gallagher.!!!

Back in the day, the players voted for their captain. A player who refused to kiss the coach's butt could still be named captain.

On today's edition of the habs, i only consider the likes of Brandon Prust & Brendan Gallagher as captain-type material. Maybe Francis Bouillion if he's re-signed. But Prust is a 4th-liner and at best a role player. He has a knack to take dumb penalties at the worse moments. So he's scratched off my list. Then you take Bouillion, and he's a veteran. However, he's now a marginal player and will sit out many games. He's also in the final year or so of his career should he be re-signed by the habs or any other team. For this reason, he's scratched off my list.

Then you have Brendan Gallagher. I don't know of a team who wouldn't want this kid in their lineup. He comes to play every single night and plays like he's 7 feet tall. He fears no one & has a huge heart. He appears to be well-liked on the team and has a promising future in this league. Therefore, i can't figure out why management chose to name the other four ahead of Brendan Gallagher. It totally mesmerizes me. I mean, come on. P.K. Subban and Max Pacioretty ahead of Gallagher?? Are you kidding me??? Subban has great offensive skills and a big mouth....but he's no leader and many veterans on the team (possibly incl. the coach) can't stand him. Max Pacioretty is no leader & lacks heart. We saw this in last year's miserable playoffs that he had. He comes to play when he feels like it. He cannot be depended upon. As for the two others, Markov is way too quiet & barely speaks english even though he's been in the league for close to a dozen years. Plekanec speaks a bit better english, but he's also way too quiet for the captaincy, and i'm not convinced he wants to be regarded as a team leader. I also feel that this may be his final year with the habs.

So why isn't Brandon Gallagher among that group?? I can't understand it!

That's old news, gohabsgo. In fairness, the Leafs didn't embarrass themselves in the playoffs in 9 of the last 10 years. (including the most recent)

Good point AV...and in further defence of the Leafs, let's not forget that they finished ahead of SEVEN of the thirty teams in the NHL last season. I'm sure that their fans will agree that there is nothing shameful for the Leafs coming an impressive 23rd in a 30 team league:thumb:

The jury is still out, but in a couple of years i'd give it to Alex Galchenyuk. He's extremely talented & has a bright future ahead of him, he's respected, he seems well-liked by his teammates and he's fluent in english & russian.

The other night after the habs game i was watching L'Antichambre on RDS and they showed clips of Subban, Pacioretty and Markov addressing the media after the game. When they returned to the studio, former coach Jacques Demers, who was on the panel during that episode, lamented the fact that no francophones were interviewed and wondered why not?

Then it hit me later that the players who agreed to be interviewed were all alternate captains. I then realized that out of the 4 alternates, none of them speak french. I found this surprising, since the media made a huge fuss out of the fact former captains Mike Keane and Saku Koivu didn't speak french at the time they were named captain. I'd even say that this is what chased Mike Keane out of town when he was packaged with Patrick Roy in their trade to Colorado for Jocelyn Thibault and two other europeans.

So is having a french-speaking coach now a bigger deal than having a french-speaking captain in Mtl?

I'd say that as of today, Max Pacioretty has the edge.

What i'd do?

I'd give the 'C' to either Tomas Plekanec or Andrei Markov prior to the playoffs. They deserve the honor.

They also won't play forever & once they leave the organization, either Pacioretty or Subban will be more prepared to be named captain.

My darkhorse? Alex Galchenyuk, who is fluent in both english & russian.

But the fans and media made such a big fuss in the past that Mike Keane didn't speak french. So who knows, maybe the likely suspects will not be the team's next captain, even though PK has made strides in learning the french language over the past 2 years.
