Habs lost again last night, this time against the Dallas Stars. The team looked like zombies for two periods & showed a bit of life in the third period. The key play of the game was the Tyler Seguin goal with just a few seconds left at the end of the 2nd period. PK Subban & Andrei Markov looked absolutely terrible on that goal, which happened immediately after a face-off in the Mtl end. Markov positioned himself at the edge of the face-off circle near the boards, with no opposing player in front of him. Instead, he should have been behind his center (Desharnais) and closer to the goalie. Subban just stood there like a statue and never took his man, which should have been Seguin. Pacioretty was in front of Subban and several people believe that he should have taken care of Seguin, but Seguin wasn't his man, the opposing defenceman at the point was. Seguin couldn't believe how easily he was allowed to score on a play that rarely works & just raised both arms in total surprise after he scored the goal.

The habs are a team in freefall and my prediction that they will miss the playoffs this season doesn't seem so crazy now after all.

On another note, Seguin now leads the league in scoring & in goal scoring, thanks to the habs last night. I've said it before & will say it again: The Boston Bruins will regret not showing more patience towards this kid & practically giving him away to the Stars. I'll even go as far as saying that it will surpass the Joe Thornton 'trade' as the worse trade the Bruins ever made.

They will reach the playoffs. You make the same mistake than those who saw them with the cup after a few straight wins. They won't go in FInale, but will do the playoffs.

Agree about Seguin...

Funny! When there is nothing else to talk about fans hang on to individual glories, and keep harping on it. What Doc doesn't mention is Seguin has a Stanley Cup Championship ring he got when he was with the Bruins and Seguin helped get that championship. When Seguin helps do that for the Leafs then Doc can talk. It's great that Seguin is doing very well for Toronto. Now give me a shout when he's doing THIS well for the Leafs:

Since beating boston 2-0 eight games ago they are 1-5-1 since, getting outscored 24 to 13 (-11).

The next week and a half has the making for a brutal stretch of the season in Montreal as well, what with 3 out of the next 4 games against big tough skilled western conference teams (Van/LA/Anaheim) and one "gimme" game against Carolina not to mention the ceremony and funeral for Jean Beliveau tuesday and wednesday which can be emotionally draining. As well there will be pressure and HIGH Expectations for tuesdays Vancouver game because any and all former habs players that are alive should be in attendance for tuesdays ceremony game. If the habs lay an egg on tuesday then do not expect things to get better any time soon. They must come out and play their butts off with a dominating win tuesday if this team is to go anywhere this season.

The Montreal defence is just a mess. Who would have thought trading away Josh Gorges to get PK signed would impact the team so much. Unfortunately PK is unable to step up as it seems that only Markov could make PK look like a better D man. Can anyone remember Mike Komisarek, Markov made him look so good that Toronto signed him to a big contract only to realize that he was not as good as Markov made him to look.

The Don,

That is true about Markov making others look better but not as much so at this stage of his career as say 5 years ago. Imagine what would happen if Markov ever goes down to injury for an extended period of time tho

Good luck tomorrow night, the one game of the year (because of all the canadien alumini that will be in attendance for the Jean Beliveau ceremony) that the canadiens must step up and dominate or at least win somehow. Should be a great game on a very sad night at Le Centre Bell.

Right on all counts & i have been saying since August that re-signing P.K. Subban would impact the team drastically since it would cost a fortune to re-sign him in order to prevent him from going free in two years. Giving ANY player $9 million+ per season in a cap market often affects a team drastically since that team has to make moves in order to clear up cap space to accomodate such a large contract.

I would never want any player on a team of mine would such a contract since it kills the team chemistry & such a high contract for long-term makes a player literally untradeable. The only way to get rid of such a big contract is to trade him for a similar cap number. In other words, "i'll give you my problem & you send me your problem."

Subban is such a careless player that you need a good veteran stay-at-home type in order to constantly cover for him. But let's be serious here. Subban's main contribution to the team was always on the powerplay with his big shot from the point. I've always said that he was one of the worst defensive defensemen in hockey. But teams eventually got to know Subban better and realized that to make the Mtl powerplay less effective, you had to cover the points in order to prevent that big shot. Which is why Mtl's powerplay hasn't been very good over the past two seasons. It was always the same play: Subban to Markov to Subban....and the big shot on the net. Predictable!

Indeed, Andrei Markov had & still has the quality of making his defensive partner look better than he is. Subban never looked better than when he used to be paired with Markov. I still consider Andrei Markov as the habs' best defenceman and now realize how important it was to re-sign him.

Josh Gorges & Brian Gionta were also key elements to past habs teams because of their presence & leadership qualities. I've said from day one of this season that getting rid of both of them at the same time would have reprecussions since the habs don't any leadership on the current team. Sure, when things are going good & the team seems to get every bounce go there way, the 'leadership' aspect goes out the window. But when those bounces stop coming your way and things are going bad....very bad.....it almost seems like a ship captain's has jumped ship and the ship is out of control. Not naming a team captain might have been problematic since possibly know one gets up to speak out and try to put the team's focus back on the right path.

Are Markov, Subban, Pacioretty & Plekanec leaders?? In their own little way, possibly. But Markov, Pacioretty and Plekanec are not the vocal types. Two of them struggle with the english language, especially their best player Markov. Subban enjoys all the attention, but since he's not having a good season & has been one of the reasons lately why the team is struggling, it's not really his place to stand up and start pointing fingers at people.

One player that i see as 'leader' material is Brandon Prust. But Prust isn't the brightest kid in the room & has a tendency to take stupid penalties at the wrong times. He's also only a 4th liner. Another potential leader is Manny Malhotra, but he's also a 4th liner who is used sparingly and has yet to score a single point this season.

These days, a Gionta or a Gorges would do wonders around this team. However, the team refused to re-sign them since they figured correctly that it would cost them a fortune to re-sign P.K. Subban. They likely didn't figure that Geoff Molson would step in and force his GM to give in to all his demands, but personally i knew it would cost them a lot of money to re-sign him since he knew fully well that he could likely break the bank in two years if he went on the free market. He's now the highest paid defenceman in the history of hockey.

Like the Philadelphia Flyers, the habs may need to make a major trade to shake things up. That's why i wouldn't discount the possibility of trading Subban for Claude Giroux. They have similar contracts, the Flyers are once again in need of defencemen, Subban isn't bringing anything to the table for the habs....and Giroux could immediately become the team's next captain. Plus, he's french. He'd be a natural fit with the habs. Many believe that the Flyers wouldn't go for such a trade, but they forget that few captains have had long careers in Philly.

The only one i can think of is Bobby Clarke. In recent years, the likes of Mike Richards & Jeff Carter were traded away when things weren't right in Philly. So it wouldn't surprise me to see the Flyers unload the likes of Luke Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, Braeden Schenn, Sean Couturier & possibly even Claude Giroux. They'd love to get rid of veteran Vinnie Lecavalier, but he's too much of an unproductive player for the kind of money (and term of contract) he's making. He'd also love a change of scenery, but he's now in limbo just like Roberto Luongo was at the time he was with Vancouver. Untradeable.

A trade of PK Subban and Tomas Plekabec for Drew Dougty. Both clubs will win with that trade.

Too many reasons for LA not to make such a trade & hang up the phone on Bergevin.

Number one, LA doesn't have the cap space to take on a combined $14 million in cap money. Doughty's cap number is only $7 million.

Number two, why would they want Plekanec when he's likely to bolt in less than 2 years?

Number three, why would LA want to add another center when they're already loaded with good centers?

Number four, why would they want to trade away possibly the best defenceman in hockey for a grossly overpaid one who may not even be among the league's top 30 defencemen?

Number five, why would the Kings want to take on such a ridiculously long bad contract (another 7 years to go after this season) when they know fully well that his best years may never repeat themselves & he is likely untradeable?

Number six, why would LA trade a great two-way defenceman for one who has no clue how to play in his own end & who makes $2 million more per season than Doughty?

Number seven, why would they trade a well-liked team leader like Doughty for a player who constantly craves attention & the spotlight who potentially could ruin team chemistry & atmosphere and who is clueless in knowing what a team leader really is?

Number eight, why would they ever want on their team someone as extraverted & polarizing as PK Subban?

Number nine, why would Drew Doughty agree to waive his no-trade in order to relocate his family from the beautiful confines of sunny California & Hollywood in order to move to very cold Montreal and its long cold season?

Number ten, why would Doughty agree to lose a considerable amount of money by moving from a reasonable tax bracket to the toughest tax bracket in all of sports where your entire life is put under a microscope by the fans & especially the local media?

And there are more reasons, including why in the world would Darryl Sutter want to coach a headache like PK Subban over a coach's dream in Drew Doughty?

The whole thing makes zero sense!

Doc, you should be GM of the habs, but I am glad you are not or there might actually be some hope of another cup in La Belle Province in the next 20 years.

The Subban signing will turn out to be brutal IMO especially with the high taxes in Quebec and trying to lure other top talent to come there. The Subban for Giroux trade would actually make sense IF Mtl had some good defensive prospects in Hamilton but they really dont. They have a couple fringe players but not a stud D man that they would need to contend once Giroux was on board but maybe in 5 years but then Giroux's ceiling of "elite" will be on the down swing yet should still be a very good player, just not at the top of his game like now.

Dion for 7X7 is looking better everyday than Subbans 8x9. I have said before as you have that Subban's defense is not elite and never will be most likely. He should be made a winger, like Brent Burns in San Jose to max his value out. Imagine Galchenyuk centering Pacs and Subban on a line?

Considering that Subban has been hovering around the 100th in the league (for defencemen) mark in plus/minus since the start of the season, any player from Hamilton can't really be worse than what he contributes to the team. Nathan Beaulieu isn't that much worse than Subban when you really think hard about it. He may actually be less of a defensive liabilty and he can hold is own on the offensive side of the game. What i'm trying to say is that Subban is NOT a stud D man. The fact he won the Norris in a shortened season two years ago was a mirage. Sure, he was named to the Olympic team, but Mike Babcock considered him too much of a liability to play him and nailed him to the bench during the entire tournament.

Trading him for someone like Giroux would be a win-win for the habs. In reality, they wouldn't really be losing that much (just look at his stats). They'd be ridding themselves of a very bad contract and in the process they'd have a #1 center, a captain, a french-canadian and a bonafide star in Claude Giroux.

But would the Flyers go for it? They might since currently their team isn't going anywhere but down and things don't look that much better for the future. They need to shake things up big time!

And with that kind of thinking lets not be surprised that the leaf can't win a cup...
Pk is young and will cost us some victory's but he will also make us win more games . He is ninth defense man in the league in front of Keith Letang Franson .
The trip was long and hard for the habs ,they lost last two game but tonight manage with inspiration of the great number 4 Jean Beliveau a win .

still a lot off hockey to be played .....

Nice to see the canadiens did not lay that perverbial egg tonight in respect to Jean Beliveau but in fairness, Toronto and Ottawa wore down the "Nucks" for them. So my answer still remains the same, NO the canadiens will NOT win the cup this year, not even close.

PK is young and will cost victories. I agree with you. But he's also now approaching 'veteran' category and the jury is still out when you say he will make you win more games. So far that hasn't been the case since he allows more goals when he's on the ice than when he's not. He's also the highest paid defenceman in the history of hockey. It's still he starts playing like he's paid.

Former habs player and habs coach Guy Carbonneau said two weeks ago that in his mind, PK wasn't even among the top 30 defencemen in the league. His stats prove this. Personally, i'm not even sure he's a top 50 defenceman. There are too many faults to his game & i question his character. People expecting him to be a leader will be very disappointed and will have died a long time ago for this to ever happen. You are born a leader. You do not become one. Someone giving you a 'C' or an 'A' doesn't make you a leader.

Many habs fans describe last night's win as 'inspirational'. But the same problem happened last night: it's a team that can barely score any goals. It was tied 1-1 until the last few minutes of the game. One more goal by a very tired Vancouver team could have turned the game around. And Calgary is now the best Canadian western team, not Vancouver. Brian Burke has turned that franchise around & people should take notice.

I totally agree. Vancouver was worn out by the time they arrived in Mtl after playing two very tough games against the Leafs and Sens.

I'm sticking to my earlier prediction: THE HABS WILL NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THIS SEASON.

Reasons: They're a team that survives on strong goaltending and luck. Goalies have slumps & luck doesn't last. Another reason is lack of scoring. The game is still about scoring goals and when a team struggles to score goals, they're in big trouble. I also have problems with the overall defence. Too many holes. And when you're $9 million/year superstar plays crappy, then the team is in trouble. And finally, lack of leadershp since the departure of Gorges and Gionta. No one has filled the void left by these two veterans. And currently, i can't see anyone on that team of egos and europeans filling that void.

I predict the habs will make the playoffs. They win when they need to win . They have a lot of depth and size. The GM is not afraid to make trades . They have some good player in the minors who are ready to set in when needed.

I hope you were joking when you made this post.

The habs were very lucky earlier on and are finally playing to their talent level. They have lost way too many games lately where they simply didn't show up for the game. They rely way too much on Carey Price. The powerplay is one of the worst in the league. They can barely score 5 on 5. They have no depth and they are still a very small team. The GM's hands are tied with Subban's $9 million/year contract and the recent trades he's made....such as Gonchar's $5 million salary. They barely have $2 million left in cap space & my guess is that Bergevin would like to hang on to that same cap space until the trade deadline in order to make a similar trade to last season's when he obtained Tomas Vanek. Vanek was heading to Toronto until the last minute when Toronto was unable to clear the cap space.....so Mtl was fortunate and got him for a bargain at the last minute.

And even if Bergevin would want to make a trade to improve the team, he has to give something back in order to make the deal happen. As of now, most of the players he would like to trade are untradeable. Why would any GM want midget David Desharnais when he can't score goals and is way overpaid? And if he does make a trade, he'd have to part with either Beaulieu, Tinordi or players like Eller, Bournival, Galchenyuk or Gallagher.

Beaulieu has considerably more value than Tinordi, who in reality is nothing more than a mistake-prone pylon. But will Bergevin want to part with Beaulieu? Fucale might be able to get him something, but there isn't much of a market for goalies. So forget about a trade to help this team, unless you do something drastic and trade Subban for a superstar with a similar contract, which would totally change the current team chemistry....which might not be such a bad thing.

The habs DO NOT have much in the minors. All they have are players that have played musical chairs between Mtl and Hamilton over the past two seasons. The only two players that are marginal NHL-calibre at the moment are Beaulieu and Tinordi....and Tinordi has struggled mightly since being sent down after Gonchar was obtained.

What would worry me is the fact that the habs have been healthy for the most part this season. Recently, Lars Eller has been injured, but he should be back in a week. On top of that, he hasn't done anything this season, so his loss hasn't mattered much. So imagine how much the habs will struggle to win if and when injuries do occur to some of their key players?

Here's what i'm predicting:

-The habs will not make the playoffs.

-Michel Therrien will be fired prior to the end of this season.

-Marc Bergevin will likely survive another season.

-Dustin Tockarski will not be the back-up come next season. He's simply not NHL-calibre material.

-Dr. David Mulder will step down and be replaced at the team's physician next season.

-Ginette Reno will not be singing the Canadian national anthem again this season.
