Definately go with the second choice. If you are doing anything with at all with video the extra 150 will be well spent. The first system is underpowered by todays standards and you will be much happier with the Quad Core box.

When you consider that you would really have to spend the extra 40 on the first system to upgrade the processor plus the cost of upgrading Vista basic to Premium, there won't be much price difference in the end anyways.

With the Quad you will have a system that you will be very happy with for years to come.

Thanks, I think I will go with the second choice, for 700$ I think it's a good deal, and I don't even need to spend gas to get it lol!

Last question Tech...It gives me the option to delete after deselecting the ones I've deselected. Will that delete those ones or the ones that still have check marks next to them? I don't want to mistakenly delete all the .ini files. Lol.

No, don't delete anything. If you do, you won't be able to put them back if something doesn't work properly after. Try it first and if everything works ok you can go back and delete them if you want but there isn't any real need to do so.

For that price it's a steal! I couldn't build one for that price at my cost. I'm certain you will be very happy with your purchase.

Which of the laptop makers can you get a disk for a fresh install from. I got a dell desktop a while ago and it was full of garbage, I would have loved to just blow the HD and reinstall just the OS, but there was the disk, gone.

Dell no longer include either Windows or system recovery discs with their systems. You have to make your own by using the included application on the system. Many vendors are doing the same these days.

What you want to do is an excellent idea though. All you have to do is borrow a Windows installation disc for your version of Windows from a friend if possible or download an image and burn your own. All Windows cd/dvd are the same. There is no difference from system to system. In fact, if you are running Vista all Vista install DVDs include all versions of Vista. The one that is installed is determined by the key number you enter during installation. This does not apply for recovery discs supplied by the manufacturer. These are specific to the systems indicated on the disc.

If you do decide to go ahead with a clean install, go to the manufacturer's web site and download all the applicable drivers for your system and then burn them to disc before proceeding with a format. This way you will have the required drivers ready to install as Windows may not have drivers for all your components. The most important one after a fresh install is the network driver. Without this you are pretty much screwed as you will not be getting back on the net to download anything without it.

You will likely discover your system to be faster and more stable after removing all the bundled 'bloatware'. It is well worth doing.

If you go ahead and need any other info or help..ie links to download a Windows image or anything else, let me know.

Whenever I get a new laptop from Dell the first thing I do is nuke it. They put to much crap on it from the factory for it to run properly. A clean install is the way to go.

I think it is insane that you buy a computer with a OS licence and you can't even get a disk. I'd be willing to pay the extra 5 bucks rather then go through the buggery of trying to get and burn a copy.

Hell if you don't get a disk, you might as well pirate the thing as far as I am concerned, except dell charges as much for their linux machines as their windows ones, or at least they did.

When you buy a computer with a pre-installed O/S, very few major manufacturers ever supplied a Windows disc. If anything they will only supply a restore disc and even that is becoming very rare.

If you download a Windows disc image or borrow one from a friend to re-install Windows on your system using the license that is affixed to your system, you are not committing piracy in any way. The physical media is not relevant, only the license label, the COA, is important.

Also, when you buy a computer the license for Windows is only legally valid for that system. You cannot remove the license label and transfer it to another system. If you buy a retail version of Windows you can install it on a new system when you replace the one you own, as long as you remove Windows from the first system.

With most brand name systems, if the Windows media is not supplied you can obtain a copy from Microsoft for the price of shipping and handling, it's usually around 20 bucks or so, or you can download the image and burn it yourself for free.

Windows Vista? Puh-leeze

Get yourself an Apple. Or an Asus and run Linux.

Word is even Bill doesn't run Vista, and they are already looking to fast-track the even-newer-even-better system release because Vista sucks so much donkey dong. It is fuckery of the highest order.

Can't burn DVDs anymore

Techman:

I noticed some time ago that i can't burn DVDs anymore with my laptop. An error always shows up saying that the copying failed. I got tired of wasting blank copies so i stopped. Do you think it's a software program or my dvd drive? My laptop is not yet 4 years old.

A good friend of mine recently bought himself an Apple laptop which also has Windows on it. It looks great! When i asked him why he continues to buy Apple, even though he still uses his Windows laptop as backup, he replied that almost every computer whiz he's spoken to recommended Apple (even though it's priced higher) because it's much better and.....NEVER BREAKS.

Then I guess he has only spoken to Apple fans. Hate to burst your bubble but most Mac users that I know have as many if not more crashes using the latest Mac O/S as people using XP SP3 and much more problems than anyone I know that runs Vista.

One of my customers has two daughters going to two different schools in the US. Both were told that they require Windows laptops as Macs are not supported by the school network and are unable to meet the schools' software requirements.

And anyone who claims that Apples don't break is living in their own nice friendly little world where Steve Jobs is king.

Somehow I have a feeling that few of the 'computer whizs' he has spoken to actually work in the business.

By the way...if you spend the same amount of money on a PC as people do on a Mac, you will have a system that will blow the doors off of any Mac that currently exists. And it if you install only a fresh copy of Windows on a system without all the crap that the brand name companies take it upon themselves to 'give' you for free, you will find it is just as, if not more, reliable as any Mac.

And no competition ... Look what happened to Apple clone builders

They were sued out of existence by Steve Jobs. He can't handle the fact that others can build faster and cheaper Macs than his own company can.

I wonder how many people would be buying Macs if Microsoft did what Apple does and made it impossible to install and run Windows on them.

apple clones were quashed by apple. it had nothing to do w/ the quality of the clones. it was a business decision by woz-n-jobs. you can probably still find the legal filings in santa clara county if you care to look it up. quashing the clones actually cost them market share by keeping their hardware prices high.

love their design style but would never buy their products.

Actually that is not true. There are indeed viruses for the Mac O/S. But you could also make the same claim for Vista. There is no virus that can infect Vista without deliberate user intervention either by turning of the built in security or by actually being stupid enough to install the virus themselves.

That is exactly the same amount of security as Macs.

Besides, there is no profit or glory in creating a virus for a Mac. Not enough people use them to make it worth the time to do it.
