Actually Thanksgiving for us is not until November 28, but it is Columbus Day tomorrow and a holiday. And we should all thank Christopher Columbus for discovering the piece of real estate that is the American continents, or we would not be here to celebrate anything.

Um, this, I believe is the Montreal Escort Review Board. Contrary to the opinions of some, Montreal is not an ex-urb of the US of A, existing only for the pleasure of those who only occasionally cross the border.

As for Christopher Columbus, I believe that tomorrow in the US is the only observed holiday on the planet that celebrates the accomplishments of a mass murderer. Go figure.

As it is Thanksgiving in Canada, as an American ex-pat, I'd again like to raise a glass of thanks to PE Trudeau and Lester B. Pearson and all those Canadians who welcomed my countrymen with open arms in that time when many young Americans felt in necessary to escape the US and its involvement in Viet Nam.

    .
    I like your comment Rumple,

I was lecturing a couple of weeks ago in Florianópolis (State of Santa Catarina in Brazil) and I ran into this large obilisk erected on the middle of the campus:

    http://www.panoramio.com/photo/33537142

It is a monument in honour of the (numerous) victims of colonization.

Columbus, in South America and even in Mexico (which is still North America) and Central America, is probably the most despised historical figure. A famous Irish-Mexican historian and philosopher, the late Edmundo O'Gorman (1906-1995), even spoke of a processus of "encubrimiento" (covering) of the Other instead of the so-called "descubrimiento" (discovering) of the America(s) by the European civilization.

In a breathtaking book, Crónica del descubrimiento, the late Uruguayan writer Alejandro Paternain (he passed away in 2004), tells in reverse the story of the clash between the so-called
European "civilisation" and the American "Barbary) (here he is echoing the famous book by the Argentinian writer (and politician) Domingo Sarmiento: Facundo: Facundo: Civilización y Barbarie (1845) [Civilization and Barbarism]. What would have happened if a couple of South American Indians had "discovered" Europe before the European.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

It is in November in the US- Nov. 28 this year. This is a fact, it is not something I made up or tried to be funny about. It's also fact (and not made up or a joke) that Columbus Day is celebrated everywhere in the Americas except Canada, as well as in Spain, on whose behalf Columbus sailed. Not really sure what your problem is with facts.

I was not questioning the facts nor your knowledge. I was making a joke man, nothing more. If it offended you then I apologize, end of story.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Day

If fact, Columbus day is celebrated in 47 states only. In the rest of the Americas and Spain, there is some celebration around this time, but Columbus has nothing to do with it.

"The landing is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in Latin America, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain, as Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural (Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity) in Argentina, and as Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Belize and Uruguay. These holidays have been celebrated unofficially since the late 18th century, and officially in various areas since the early 20th century."

Please forgive EB for thinking that the world revolves around the US. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon affliction among my countrymen.
