    Why Men Visit Prostitutes

Men visit prostitutes for companionship: Study

Turns out, men who pay prostitutes for sex also want to cuddle, according to a new study that found regular "johns" often develop feelings of romance and love toward their paid sex providers.

Encounters between prostitutes and clients have come to resemble quasi-dating relationships, American researchers Christine Milrod and Ronald Weitzer say, who analyzed 2,442 postings on a website where more than a million registered members read and post reviews of sex workers.

They found approximately a third of them contained "discussions of emotional intimacy" between prostitutes and clients, many of whom expressed a desire for an emotional connection beyond the sex.

There's even a name for it: The girlfriend experience (GFE). The connection is genuine but limited by time constraints and the small matter of the exchange of money for service.

"Sex remains part of the service, but it is coupled with mutual sharing, support and companionship," the authors said.

For clients looking for the GFE, "cuddling, kissing and being emotionally cared for is often desired," the study found. "The men also pride themselves on their ability to provide pleasure to the sex worker."

A small number of men fall in love with their sex provider and come to believe she reciprocates their feelings. Some even hope to expand the relationship to marriage.

The study was published in a recent edition of the research journal Men and Masculinities.

I find the word "prostitute" derogatory and with a highly negative moral connotation. I would prefer we refer to people who choose to exchange sexual services for money as surrogate sex partners, a relationship negociated and consumed between two or more consenting adults for their mutual benefits, while these might not be the same from one partnerto another, but always complement themselves.

As for the results, I concur with the findings. They are only tendencies, with percentages of occurence showing the prevalence of certain tendencies on others.

Because it is a coping mechanism...

( All coping mechanisms have an inherent logic & serve an important function. Underlying each coping mechanism is a need. If you discard a coping mechanism without finding another way to understand & meet the underlying need, the change wont last. Therefore you have to identify the need before you can effectively replace a self-destructive coping pattern with a healthier one)

Take a piece of paper & write down for each coping mechanism >
    1) Coping mechanism: Ways this coping mechanism can still be useful to me:

    2) Ways this coping mechanism is damaging to me:

    3) The needs I am meeting with this behavior are:

    4) Healthier ways to meet these needs would be to:

Seeing prostitutes on a regular basis is serving a sexual addiction... Addictions can manifest themselves in several ways, but the common element is a compulsive urge for gratification, albeit temporary. A fellow foot fetishist articulated on the subject of addiction perfectly; he said “I’m not addicted to anything…except temptation!” People become addicted to all sorts of things, some may have positive addictions but unfortunately most victims acquire negative addictions. A negative addiction is one that may have dire consequences should the person pursue their addiction long term. Addictions such as cigarette smoking can lead to cancer and heart disease. Addictions such as excessive alcohol consumption can lead to damage to the brain and the liver. Addictions such as the abusive consumption of various illegal narcotics known as cocaine, crack, ecstasy, marijuana, heroin, LSD, etc. leads to the destruction of brain cells, plus a host of various types of other health related issues, and in some cases to an overdose of the drug being consumed, causing death. Addictions to overeating will lead to obesity, resulting in a host of other health related issues such as diabetes. Addictions to gambling can often bankrupt a person, leaving them broke and resulting in possible suicide. Addictions to steroids can cause a person to develop liver and kidney problems, plus the real possibly of developing various forms of cancer not to mention extreme aggressive behavior.

A man’s sex drive is one of the most powerful forces within himself and it can be very hard to ignore those voices inside your head (both of them)! Addictions to sex, if you are paying for it can also bankrupt you if you are out of control. I recall a prostitute once telling me that from her experience, seeing a sex worker can easily become very addictive for many men. I didn’t believe her at the time, but now I am convinced of it. Furthermore, addictions to sex can often have dire consequences for people involved in either a marriage or a long term serious relationship. For example, If someone is involved in either a marriage or a serious relationship and are going outside their marriage or relationship to have their sexual addiction fulfilled, then something is either very wrong with the relationship or with the individual afflicted with the sexual addiction.

Or the cynical explanation, as Dashiell Hammett would say; you don't pay prostitutes for sex, you pay them to leave afterwards

This is true for many lines of business. My grandfather would go and get his coffee at the restaurant almost every morning, mostly for the warmth of social interaction.

Nowadays to talk about sex and SPs as if it is still something taboo or different... is really retarded !
Only the conservatives from all types of religions wants to go back to the era in which you couldn't get toilet paper.

And I'm always amused at all these 'clueless innocent people' making studies about sex in our society.

Last time I nailed it, it was with one of my buddy who was trying to laugh at me (drank too many) by saying I was paying to have sex.
Poor guy, when I showed pics of girls I had sex with, everyone was drooling... !

Can you imagine ? I was able to bang over 60 SPs for the price he paid in court just to divorce his last crazy b*tch ?
And I'm not even counting everything he lost including the house.

One of the girl at the bar said 'Why would you pay for sex ?' and I said 'why would want to pay for shoes ?'
...To get the pair you want right ? but why paying if you can get them by having sex... which you like having anyway ?

Since then ? I say I pay for shoes...and I aways get that look from anyone !

    Recap ? I visit prostitute to buy shoes I don't wear !
    High heels that is...

Or we could ask why people visit Stonehenge or the Pyramids. I'd rather visit prostitutes. I only wish they sold postcards and souvenirs!

Let me put in my two cents by asking this question:

How many women any of you have ever had sex with without buying them dinner or drinks or taking them out to an event or something?

I may be cynical but I think paying for sex is just a natural part of male courtship. It's just a more direct approach...and sure thing.....with SPs.

    Hello gentlemen,

"There's even a name for it: The girlfriend experience (GFE). The connection is genuine but limited by time constraints and the small matter of the exchange of money for service."

I came for the SEX with beautiful women with hot bodies.

    Noun:
A feeling of fellowship or friendship.
    Synonyms:
    fellowship - comradeship - camaraderie - company

Doc, whoever wrote this took a slant that is a little too pie in the sky for me. Real companionship cannot be clocked and charged by the hour. I've never felt true companionship with escorts only an artificial imitation of it. That's not a bad thing. Maybe I'm thinking too seriously on what companionship should be, but I think anyone who considers what we get real companionship is allowing himself to risk forgetting the business basis of this arrangement and slipping into one of those traps that leads to getting hurt. Yeah, I've had feelings for some of the ladies, but not to losing sight of what we are involved in.

For me the GFE is about the high quality of what we refer to as "service". But, no matter how good it is or what feelings may arise from it, "companionship" in this case isn't much more than a feel good euphemism, salesmanship. But, if others want to call it that it's all good as long as they don't lose sight of where it all begins...and ENDS.

However, the article sure is more intelligent than all those on the other side that try to say the sex provider business is all about exploitation, abuse, drugs, alcohol, and slavery.

    Cheers,

    Merlot

In 2012 I honestly believe there is no difference between a prostitute and a regular girl
