I need to get back in shape, mid 40 going up the stairs at work and huffing and puffing. Move to Laval a few months ago and been checking some gyms, being older I rather avoid the younger crowd, i just want to train and get fit, feel better is my goal.

I saw a few of those econo cardio gyms around fairly cheap for a membership and the gym look really good.

Try it for a couple of months and see how you like it.

I have a membership at Econofitness which I just got. They have locations all over Montreal and the cost per month is $34.

What I like about this place and the membership is that I can use any location. There are many of them and many are open 24 hours. It is called Platinum membership.

The only drawback is with the Platinum membership you will have to pay for a shower, which would be an additional $3 per shower.

With platinum you get unlimited showers..
You might be paying when you don't have to. To pay is often outside the shower door, but the scanner for the membership card is inside the door.

If you’re active and have good basic shape maybe have a trial with crossfit training. A good mix of cardio, strength and gymnastics. Result is a rock hard athletic body shape rather than a bodybuilder one.
I used to get bored by normal gym but when I tried this type of training, It just clicked and I enjoy every session.

here is a tip.we all go towards insulin resistance as we age.eat whole good foods
think a protein shake is good -wrong anything you pulverise and eat as a powder spikes insulin
chew your protein instead
in order of insulin spike is carbs then protein lastly fat
many will eat a carnavor diet meat great as long as your iron is normal
keto high fat with protein is your enxt choice if your like me
dont guess get full bloodwork
a iron profile with ferratine iron sat trasnferine.
i still at my age weight and measure all my food like in my
teens when i started bodybuilding age 15
below 1977 age 20
after 5 yrs of training and diet i was a natural(before i took steroids)

Wow, no i am not your super man bodybuilder at all, i am mid 40 now but have the privilege of working with a 50y old women who as been active all her life.

Ok for keto, i did low carb back in 2000 and it work like a charm, my eating plan is mostly keto now, even if i don't have weight to lose, i did read a lot about keto and its health benefits.

The women at my job as 2 friends who were crossfiters (that is what they are called i think) and they got injured one back one shoulder, this is not for me, heavy weights squats and deadlifts and bench press done fast. Still I admire and respect people who do this its very intense.

The women at my job got me on a 3 times per week full body workout, I love it and some walking on the treadmill 20 minutes. I also walk at work park my car farther in the parking take stairs etc. Its been 2 weeks now and i already feel better, more energy, and less huffing and puffing while climbing the stairs. I mostly do machines at the gym and i love it, she told me that at our age its more of a question of longevity and going to intense might not be a good idea.

Training
most people trqain with bad form
here is an important concept
if you for instance curl a wt 10x but can do 30 your doing little but dont strain
time under tension is the key any movement has a posative and negative function
curl up 3 secounds and very slow down this will keep muscle under tension longer which is the secret to growth (provided your properly hydrated ge enought sleep and marcos and calories are met)

satrt out with basics 3x a week big to small muscles
most important warmup
dome streatching
always do 1 or 2 warmup sets to prevent injury
big muscles to small

squat parallel 3 sets 8-12 reps
deadlift 3 sets 8-12
bench press 3 sets 8-12
military seated front barbell press 3 sets of 8-12
barbell curl m 3 serts 8-12
lying skull crusher for tri ceps 3 sets of 8 -12

this is functional training and a beginners program woman and men caan do
no need to do further
try t not spend more than 1 hr in the gym 3x a week as a begnner
Thank you very much due to arthritis in the neck squatting is out, tried it the first week puts too much pressure on the neck, great exercise, I do machine leg press, vertical bench, but dumbbell standing press, bent dumbbell rows, triceps pushdown and barbell curls. All done 3 sets of 12 reps with ab work plank.

Treadmill for 20 minutes with an incline does the job. Love it. But like i said i do a lot of extra outside the gym walk more etc. move.

My 2 cents, not as old as Maurice Richard, much younger than him by 2 years.
Going to the gym has to be done in a positive optic and have pleasure. Also the gym has to be on your route and not out of the way, either wise you are not going to make it.
You can go for a Mr. Universe body with all the different shakes and supplements, or train a little and feel good with yourself.
Me I run 2-3 times a week, with 35-45km a week with longest runs around 20KM,and go to the gym 6-7 times a week and then rest
I also consult a nutritionist, not for the diet, but learn how to eat better, and get the proper food intake.
I do not take any protein shake, or supplement , fighting the last 2-3 lbs I would like to lose, otherwise all is good, close to the 170lbs
Onlt started going to the gym after 50 yrs old, weighed over 210lbs, 2 packs of cigarettes a day, 15 cokes a day ( NO Pepsi please) and lost 40lbs by just learning to eat correctly and couple years later started running, have over 60 : 1/2 marathons and 5 full marathons (42.2km) since then.
Yes I hired a physical trainer for the program in the beginning, but today love going to the gym and have not stopped in over 15 years.
Personally I don't believe in any kind of shakes, or supplement, but believe in overall balance in training, eating and fun, and never bring my phone inside the gym, so NO distractions.
Being in shape does not mean a 6 pack, and going to Popeye either.
Go to a gym where non muscle people go to , in the same age group, and find a time slot you like, and enjoy yourself.
For me it was the secret, and feel good today.
Not everyone can be Mr. Universe, not everyone can run, not everyone is in top shape, but trying and going to the gym a couple of times a week, can help.
And yes I go see my family doctor twice a year, just to make sure, I am good.
Last point, we need to make time, to be in shape, some days are good, some days are bad, sometimes its takes maybe a year to get to anther level, the point is , it does not happen overnight.

Find the enjoyment and you will feel good, my 2 cents

Yes protein shakes in my opinion are not good for the kidneys and in excelss can make you fat.i saw my kidney flow rate go down but its back to normal >90 stopping that
I feel you don't need them, if you eat a good diet its easy to get everyone from, i take melatonin and a multi vitamin and that is it for me

Really depends on what you plan to do at the gym and what your location is

I only stay downtown/Plateau, so I don't know too much about Laval. In terms of econofitness downtown, they're all pretty crappy. So if you plan to use it when you're downtown, beware! I went to the one on Ave des Pins for a while when I was working around there. That location used to have 2 squat racks, but they got rid of one, so it's always a long wait. But they have a GHD machine, which most gyms don't have, so if you want that, it's great. (Again, depends on what you're looking for)

I also tried the Nautilus Plus locations. They're slightly cleaner, but the one in Montreal Trust is terrible. Their "flagship" one that opens until 11PM is very lacking in plates aand equpment. You have to spend 10 minutes walking around to collect weights.

I also went to ProGym to check out because I heard good things and it's great, very cheap, 24/7, and has a ton of equipment, but it's also a bit out of the way.

The YMCA's in Montreal have surprisingly good gyms. The one right near the Ritz has a pool, olympic platforms, etc.

If you don't have special things you need, and you're just looking to run on treadmills and use some free weights, any gym will do, to be honest. If you plan to squat though, I notice most econofitness only has 1 squat rack :( Not sure if Laval is the same

Maurice Richard very very solid advise also very impressive that picture of you at 20 muscular and all wow. I wish i would have started training younger, a part from soccer and judo and some karate i was barely active after my teens, walking but i always ate well, and try not go gain too much weight. Back in 2000 when i tried low carb i had gained a bit, and it was like magic, stomach fat seem to be sucked out and it was fast like really fast.

Browsing YouTube i found an old video of Lou Ferrigno the hulk training for a comeback to competition in 1991, He was asked why he did not lift heavy he said listen i love bodybuilding i am 41 and for me its longevity, lifting heavy will take a toll on your body. That was such amazing advise.

The worse enemy now is uber eats and how people, even the young people give up on life. I work with young and older people we are all shift workers, most people eat junk, I seen young people who are not even 30 gain 80 to 100 pounds in 5 years, at 3am they got there big bag of McDonalds.

The young man i work with is 23, he as 3 bags of candy and 1 sandwich, i try to get him out there, remember when we were that age we were out partying, having fun meeting women but yet this young generation do nothing. Its scary.

Honest I feel that keto after reading on it and the 50y old women at my job being big on this too, she made me read a lot of stuff on this, is the best plan not only for older people but for younger ones, eating all that sugar is not good as you say, it causes a lot of negative in the body.

I am slowly switching to keto but will still drink my fruit smoothies berries and eat some nuts. I try to keep my carbs between 50 and 70g and most of it from fibre foods. Eggs are in, some bacon sometimes, weird you eat bacon and stay slim LOL but also calorie calorie eat keep an eye on those, fat free cheese, Greek yogurt, almond milk, and my vegetable soup.

Try to vary my meals and ordering is out, those prices 30$ for close to nothing and most of the time people at work tell me its not even good, forget it.

All I have to say to you is congratulation, turning everything around and becoming an athlete, WOW, running marathon props to you and honest you should be a source of inspiration to other people, proof that it can be done with dedication.

Like I said I am new to this and excited, I guess i have everything in check now, I can't run like i said but i can walk (no excuse get out there do it), I go to the gym during my break at work usually 1-2am lol the gym is empty I love it, do my full body then walk the treadmill, but when i am out of the gym i don't stop there, i still keep active walking, climb stairs at work, etc. I try to get 30 minutes of walking on days off and more.

I live in an apartment now that i rent not sure if i want to buy a condo yet or not, i would have love to build a home gym but for now its impossible. Maybe when I retire some day.
