Trump has a history of making grandiose statements that are designed to leverage a result that is well short of the grandiose statement. Is there some intermediate step between complete autonomy and annexation of Greenland that enables the USA to obtain better control of security of shipping lanes etc.? Of course there is. I think that's the effective end result of all of this rhetoric. It's extremely foolish to take ANY political rhetoric by any country at face value.

Who would rather have backing Greenland? The full American military arsenal or 2 Danish dogsleds?

I don't believe that either Russia or China had any intention of taking Greenland. After all, there is one active and two inactive American military bases there and Denmark is a NATO member.
