Common People - Pulp

She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College
That's where I
Caught her eye
She told me that her Dad was loaded
I said, "In that case, I'll have rum and Coca-Cola."
She said, "Fine"
And then in thirty-seconds time she said

"I wanna live like common people
I wanna do whatever common people do
Wanna sleep with common people
I wanna sleep with common people like you."
Well, what else could I do?
I said, "I'll... I'll see what I can do."

I took her to a supermarket
I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere
So it started there
I said, "Pretend you got no money."
And she just laughed and said, "Oh, you're so funny."
I said, "Yeah
Well, I can't see anyone else smiling in here
Are you sure?

You wanna live like common people
You wanna see whatever common people see
Wanna sleep with common people
You wanna sleep with common people like me?
But she didn't understand
And she just smiled and held my hand

Oh, rent a flat above a shop
And cut your hair and get a job
And smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you called your dad he could stop it all
Yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what ever common people do
Never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
And then dance, and drink, and screw
Because there's nothing else to do
Oh!

Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get you through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh along, even though they're laughing at you
And the stupid things that you do
Because you think that poor is cool

Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out, they'll tear your insides out
'Cause everybody hates a tourist
Especially one who, who thinks it's all such a laugh
Yeah, and the chip stain's and grease will come out in the bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why

Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
And smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you called your dad he could stop it all, yeah

Never live like common people
Never do what common people do
Never fail like common people
Never watch your life slide out of view
And then dance and drink, and screw
Because there's nothing else to do

Wanna live with common people like you

Darondo

I like me some old motown/soul music. Darondo is a weird one. He didn't release very much but he's got a couple of great tracks. If you watch a lot of TV, you've probably heard "Didn't I". It's been in Breaking Bad and a few other shows/movies. Below is the original and a remix. TBH, the production on the original is a bit spotty. The lyrics maybe leave a bit to be desired, but it's of it's time. A lot of "I bought you everything you need, why you leaving?" vibe. Still, a great song.

All over the map. Sinatra, Bennett, Perry Como. Beach Boys, Mamas and Papas, The Doors. Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Poppy Family, and Manilow. Rush, Meatloaf, Phil Collins, Reba, George Strait, Leanne Womack, Merle Haggard, and Willie (of course). Celine, Laurie Darmon, Lara Fabian, Bocelli, Sade, Culture club, Roxy Music, I just love music, but truly eclectic in my tastes. Even Al Green and Teddy Pendergrass (awesome date music imho)

Lately i’m pretty much into 70’s & 80’s classics & some Neil Diamond, whom i actually saw in concert three times. I decided to get myself some Bose speakers & other audio equipment & installed some disco lights in my bedroom & turmed it into a homemade discoteque! Lol. I spend my afternoons going back in time & cranking up the volume! Now i’m gonna do the same thing with my living room & upgrade my current home theatre system & add disco lights. I have an 80” high end LG 4k UHD tv which i use to watch live concerts i own on 4k bluray so i’ll put my setup to good use!

From one Doc to another
if you get to South Florida, you need to go to this place, good night John boys in Delray Beach. A true disco playing the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, etc.. crowd starts at 21 and ends at 81 or so. Literally people dancing with canes!

This is one of the best songs and music videos ever made.

Socially and culturally just as relevant now as it was when it originally came out, in fact, maybe even more relevant now.

Just rewatched it. Relatively "young" Rudy Giuliani is wild, he was mayor of New York at the time in 1999. Also, the guy with the Trump for President sign had his wish granted I guess, twice. And Michael Moore directing the video shoot.. honestly, the world seemed crazy back then but compared to now things were way better.

Weren't you in the other thread saying "The agent who shot the woke lesbian that tried to run him over..."?
I changed a lot in the last 27 years since I first heard that song, went from a poor kid that had almost nothing to someone who can afford almost anything. Took a lot of hard work and persistence, it changes you and your perspective on things.

None of that changes how relevant the song is today though.

And those woke leftists aren't kids. They're adults who never grew up and live in a delusional fantasy world.

Nothing wrong with actual kids raging against the machine, it's a good thing actually for them to challenge norms and conventional wisdom.

Lol this guy doesn't realize he's a part of the machine now.

Brother, we all are. The important thing to realize is that you have a choice about the kind of cog you want to be.

Unless you're trying to be 'The Mother of Dragons' and break the wheel. Good luck with that.

Anyway.

A long time ago when I was complaining about how unfair the world is, somebody told me to stop crying like a little bitch and grow the fuck up.

Some of the best advice I ever got in my life.
