I was thinking about the same thing as you mention. And it clearly has something to do (cammy speaking the truth) with Gauthier trading Mike C because many GM's in the NHL had NO IDEA Cammy was being shopped. Another dumb move by a AHL quality gm. The return could of been better had Cammy been offered to everyone. But i love Pierre G, hope he NEVER leaves Les Canadiens!

I would love to hear ghg and ballsydays1 thoughts on this, and the 2011/2011 habbies. Boys? (i am 100% serious, as you guys are fans of the habs, what are your views?)

Pierre G. is denying it but it was CLEARLY a panic move...and EXACTLY like the panic move with Roy a decade and a half ago.

That being said, I think it's actually a good trade for both teams: Cammy had worn out his welcome in Montreal and Bourque had done the same in Calgary. Bourque's size and meanness will be helpful to the Habs, and he also gives them more cap room since he earns a lot less than the grossly overpaid Cammy. Meanwhile, Cammy had his best years as a Flame and will go there trying to prove he can still play - his mammoth ego means he will at least be trying, instead of sulking like he did in Montreal. Calgary is close to a playoff spot and figures this shakeup could prod the other players into giving it their best. And if they do make the postseason, Cammy - inspite of all his faults - has proven to be an effective playoff performer.

I think Pierre G. got lucky: he panicked and made a trade for all the wrong reasons but THIS time - by accident - it'll probably work out: In the long run I think Bourque will be more valuable to the Habs than Cammy would have been.

Agreed about JH!. Well deserved.

Rumours are heating up about the possible Wings/Leafs clash in the winter classic next year and was listening to a hockey broadcast today and they were saying, can you just imagine the names at the alumni game the day before? WOW!.... legends galore! Hey JC, do you think Stevie Y would lace em up one more time?

I'd love to see Stevie give it a shot but I think it's odds against. I'd rate it 40% yes but 60% no.

One thing i've realized about these Habs management types is that they NEVER tell the truth.

Shipping Cammallery off to Calgary was obviously a panicky move, even though The Ghost has denied it. Would he admit it? No way.

However, i think it's actually a pretty even trade for both these teams. The biggie for Mtl is the increase in cap space. Considering #13 wasn't scoring anymore, it's no big loss to the Habs considering he would have cost them a fortune in years to come.

Other panicky moves by the Habs which they wound up regretting:

a) Patrick Roy traded to Colorado for a bunch of stiffs. Colorado wound up winning the Stanley Cup because of that trade alone.

b) Mike Ribeiro traded to Dallas for a couple of stiffs, one named Ninimaa.

c) Jose Theodore being let go by "La Sainte Flanelle" because of possible affiliations to Hells Angels.

d) Guy Carbonneau sent to Dallas after his picture appeared in a local paper where was shown giving the finger to a photographer.

e) Guillaume Latendresse shipped to Minnesota for stiff Benoit Pouliot. Latendresse has played extremely well for the Wild while healthy. Pouliot now with the Bruins.

f) Chris Chelios traded to Chicago for an old Denis Savard. One of the worse trades in Habs history. Chelios had been dubbed a 'problem' by the organization. Chelios wound up winning the Norris, Stanley Cup, and is a HOFer.

g) Guy Lafleur forced into retirement by Serge Savard & Jacques Lemaire. They coaxed him into thinking he was finished & refused to trade him or release him. Le 'Demon Blond' returned 4 years later with the NY Rangers & proved that he was far from being a 'finished' player. The Habs basically kicked out their last true superstar, if you exclude Patrick Roy. He is also one of the most beloved icons in Quebec's history.

h) Firing Alain Vigneault.

i) Firing Claude Julien.

j) Letting Pat Burns sign with the Leafs.

k) Firing Michel Therrien.

l) Firing Serge Savard & Jacques Demers after the team started off slowly.

m) Replacing them with the unproven Rejean "Peanut" Houle & Mario "Bluet" Tremblay, a move that took the team back 10 years.

n) Firing Guy Carbonneau.

o) Firing Bob Gainey. Sorry, asking him to 'step' down.

p) Replacing Bob Gainey with Pierre Gauthier.

q) Trading Claude Lemieux because he was deemed a problem.

r) Trading Stephane Richer to the Devils for Sylvain Turgeon.

s) Firing Perry Pearn, one of the team's assistant coaches. Why?

t) Re-signing Andrei Markov. They were under the impression he'd sign with another team & panicked, giving him everything he asked.

u) Not re-signing Mark Streit. Big mistake.

v) Not re-signing Mike Komisarek. A very high-draft pick, they let him walk as a free agent. He was very good playing alongside Andrei Markov & would have re-signed for a decent price had they made him an offer. At the very least, they should have re-signed him & then trade him, if they didn't want him. At least he wouldn't have walked away for nothing.

w) Not keeping legendary coach Scotty Bowman with the organization. Bowman left the Habs to join the Sabres. Later, he joined the Red Wings & won more Cups. He later joined Chicago as an advisor to the GM (his son) and they won the Stanley Cup that same year.

So many more PANICKY moves.................................................not enough time to list them all.

Excellent summary Doc and right on all counts. No team will ever get EVERYTHING right but just LOOK at how many things this team has gotten WRONG in the last two decades.

Really? how come? i would think he would love to do it and out of respect for his former team.

Yes, but 1. Knees , 2. His current allegiance is to Tampa Bay, as it should be, 3. Knees , 4. Sometimes it's better to have people remember you as you were, rather than potentially tarnish the image by re-emerging as a shadow of your former self. When he played he gave everything every shift and at this stage in his life he probably can't do that any more. 5. Knees

Stevie was not only one of the most talented players in the history of the NHL but also one of the gutsiest. He often played with unbelievable pain and finally retired after a glorious career. I think that just like Gretzky once he made up his mind it was forever. Having said that, I do agree that he would probably love to do it for the Wings, for the challenge and for the possible FUN. That's why I'm calling it 40-60 - I think it is very close and could go either way.

Hello TTerrific,

The Habs always give the Bruins a good game no matter what, otherwise Canada's team had better watch out they don't settle in the cellar this year. This could be the first in many years when the Canadiens could easily do worst than the Leafs, and that's just plain embarrassing. I can hearing our desperate Leafs fans crowing now over the highlight of their season. Yeeeeaaaah baby...we bad. But what else is there after 44+ years. :D

Cheers,

Merlot

And their inferiority complex is glaringly evident in almost every hockey thread lol. I love it:nod:

I did leave out trading away the likes of John Leclair & Eric Desjardins. Not hanging on to Mark Recchi, Francis Bouillon, Stephane Robidas & Francois Beauchemin. Dropping Donald Brashear, who turned out to be a serviceable NHLer for just under two decades. Drafting Doug Wickenheiser with the first overrall pick over local hero Denis Savard. Getting only a Lars Eller for local hero & demi-god Jaroslav Halak. Trading Christopher Higgins, Ryan McDonaugh & a former prospect named Valentenko for Scott Gomez' monster contract & a stiff.

And, most of all, the following list:

NHL Winter Classic

The NHL has all but finalized details to hold next year's Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, while continuing negotiations for a second outdoor rink in downtown Detroit where all ancillary events would be held, a source told ESPN.com Friday.

The league would like to have the matter settled by the All-Star break in late January, according to the source.

The Jan. 1 game between the Original Six rivals would be played at the University of Michigan's "Big House," which, at 110,000-plus seats, is the largest college football stadium in the country. Ann Arbor is about 43 miles west of Detroit.

But cognizant of the need to include the City of Detroit in the process, the league would like to build a second outdoor rink in downtown Detroit, probably at Comerica Park, the home of Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers.

The negotiations between the league, the City of Ann Arbor and the Red Wings are not completed. There is a definite sensitivity to making sure Detroit isn't left out in the cold, as it were, given the long-time loyalty shown the beleaguered city by the Ilitch family, which owns both the Red Wings and Tigers.

The source also said next year's Winter Classic will include new events that also would be held in downtown Detroit.

This year's Winter Classic at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park featured an alumni game that drew 45,000 fans. An American Hockey League game also was sold out at the ballpark, although ticket sales for those two games were bundled with the sale of tickets to the main Winter Classic game.

The ice surface at Citizens Bank Park also was used for other hockey and public skating events over the New Year's holiday. A similar plan is being considered for Detroit, given the NHL's desire to market the event as a celebration of the sport.

The annual Great Lakes Invitational, a college tournament that features Michigan State, Michigan and other top college invitees, is among the events being considered for the downtown rink. That tournament is usually held at Joe Louis Arena, the Red Wings' permanent home, in late December.

Scott Burnside is an NHL writer for ESPN.com.

JVR out with concussion

Nashville, TN - Philadelphia third-year winger James van Riemsdyk has a concussion and will be out indefinitely, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced hours before Saturday's game in Nashville.

"James was hit in the head in each of our last two games. He reported yesterday, not feeling like himself," Holmgren said.

The 22-year-old New Jersey native has 11 goals and 11 assists in 37 games this season. Van Riemsdyk was selected second overall by the Flyers in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

Merlot, you are the man!!!!!!!!!!!! Great stuff dude! All that hype and these guys end up outside of playoff position, again! Fucking hilarious. Talk about a franchise that has mastered the art of losing. Un-fucking-real.

Fuck NHL standings, i will pm Rumple everyday to get the latest on his defacto standings, which have proven to be the more faithful representation of what the actual standings should be. Rumple better get a patent on that intellectual property, or I will find a way to make money off it:D. You know how I love getting "hot" products and selling them:lol:

Octavian was right, Burke and Wilson will be the next to go!

Lovemaker,

In all sincerity, I didn't put this in the Free-For-All thread because the situation is getting critical. Truly, how could owners and fans, or the players for that matter, of professional teams in any sport say that four straight seasons of failure justifies keeping the General Manager? A lot of managers don't last that long when they are making the playoffs.

I don't believe there has been a team in any sport that has not had some core of good players to start with at the start of a new manager's tenure to build around. If the worse scenario has been the case then then all involved were guilty of gross neglect of a professional sports team that was essentially a farce. But given some sort of real core to start with for the Leafs, with four years to draft and develop young talent, make key productive trades, and instill a motivated professional attitude, the results should be competitive.

If Burke can't do something with a team that was doing so well in the beginning of the year he should be gone, regardless of his contract. The Leafs have decent talent as their own fans on this board have said over and over. If they know anything about what they are talking about then there are no excuses for Burke any more. Many inadequate teams have made it through coaching professionalism and team spirit. The Leafs have enough talent too. This is the season to make it.

Now some Burke apologist will come around and say this post is about rivalry, lack of knowledge, or some other bad excuse. To that I say FRAUD! The facts back up everything posted.

Cheers,

Merlot

a new goalie... maybe schneider, nabby or harding and things will be back on track for 2012-13. looks like the bolts stopped playing as a team. too bad, thought they had something going when stevie y took over last season.

Burke will go down in history as the man who turned this franchise around, adding talent to a depleted minor league system to one of the very best within 3 years and growing, To helping a team desperate for a identity to not only have one but to compete night in night out with any team most nights. (we still have 2 games vs the bruins, lol) A team, that for once in years is heading in the right direction, and if he can do the unthinkable and win a Cup here, he will never pay for another night out in the Centre of the Hockey Universe aka Toronto, again.

Wilson has his team playing hard every single night, not once have they quit on him since he has been here and thats saying something. For the Leafs to be where they are after all the injuries they have had, it shows that depth and coaching are strong. Thats not making excuses, thats making a statement of the facts of the depth i talk about above. Yes the penalty kill needs to be better and it has in the last 6 games, zero goals allowed, and the Powerplay is the 4th best in ALL OF THE NHL, something the coaching never gets credit for. Haters gonna hate, and it will make winning all the sweeter, dont believe me? ask red sox fans, afterall they went twice as long w/o a title.
I guess Burke and Wilson will be next to give their badges back.

Bad defense along with old and average goaltending will do that. Stevie Y walked into the perfect place to take his first GM job as he was gifted with a Vinny L, Stamkos and St. Louis and some young talent already there. He rode the hot yet old goalie last season with a spotty defense. He still has the spotty D, but those goalies look like they have aged 20 years this season. They seriously need to add a Dman or 2 and a goalie and they should be right back in the thick of things next season.
