The Nostalgia Thread: What do you miss about the past? (Non-SW related)

We all know we tend to romanticize the past, but frankly, when we look around us, it really seems like things were better before. For the purpose of this thread, I will define the "past" as years 1960-1995.

I'll go first: the joy of pen and paper communication. Writing a letter, maybe even a love letter, to a loved one. Or sending a postal card while on vacation. (All of this still being very much possible, but forgotten by almost everyone.)

Music.

TV now is better than it used to be, and you can make arguments for and against movies being better/worse, but music is objectively much less interesting now, at least commercial radio music. You can always find good independent music no matter what era.

I have a travel companion who is older than me and he loves to send postcards from wherever we are visiting and do you realize it is extremely difficult to find actual physical paper postcards nowadays? I have friends that say to me if you come across a postcards please send it to me because I never get any real mail so that’s what I miss.

I had to scour Byward market in Ottawa for postcards for my friend and they ranged anywhere from $.88 for real cheap flimsy ones to $4 each. I managed to find some for $2.50 but when you add the parking to Park downtown and then the postage to actually send the postcards, it’s crazy.

I find postcards everywhere I visit. I bought too many also. And 5$ for the actual most beautiful travel gift is not that much! What is hard nowadays is to find a post office or a box to post them when you're abroad.

I use to do that with a friend. Wherever I travelled to I always look for a postcard. But what was the most entertaining is the writing on the postcard. I would usually describe where I am, what I was doing at the time and try to find fun things to mention.

As for the posting, the backup plan is always to post it the latest at the airport!

1. I miss the aquarium at Walmart, I know those fish were most likely suffering but as a child I loved going there and looking at them while my mom was shopping

Also I realize how dangerous that was cause someone could have definitely kidnapped me

2. I miss how small internet was and how much we didn’t rely on it

3. I miss how fancy cars were. We had DVD players in the seats or coming from the roof. Those weren’t even the priciest card back then

4. I miss how spoiled we were, having computer games in cereal boxes, better toys at McDonalds, clothes made in Canada and generous portions in restaurants

I miss many things from the past. I missed the movie rental stores. It was an outing going to the movie rental store and looking at aisle and aisle of movies and reading their descriptions to see what to rent. I miss the nice cars of the past which all had a unique interesting design. Best cars from the 60s and 70s. I love the big block V8 engine the large size of the cars and they were so beautiful and sounded good. I also like Montreal the way it used to be mostly little details I want the Pine Ave Parc Ave interchange back, I want the Ville-Marie tunnel direct to highway 10 interchange back. I want the old configuration of the turcot interchange back and the 720. There are many other things all little details.
