Where I belong.
Both NY baseball teams finished respectably 2nd in their division.
When you spend over $200 million, second place is utter failure. According to no less a source than Derek Jeter, for the Yankees anything short of a championship is a failure.

There's another word for second place: first loser.

I as well as every other fan of baseball on this earth would gladly take 3 WS championships to 2 last place division finishes!! That's just common sense, which apparently is lacking in some here!!!! Hahaha.

Well, the Red Sox are not too far behind in the payroll totals for 2014. $203 million Yankees to $162 million Red Sox. How much per win is that? $2.41 million per win for the Yankees. $2.28 million per win for the Red Sox. I would say both teams overspent for their final results. The Yankees had a better season than the Red Sox.

1. LA Dodgers $235,295,219
2. NY Yankees $203,812,506
3. Philadelphia Phillies $180,052,723
4. Boston Red Sox $162,817,411
5. Detroit Tigers $162,228,527
6. LA Angels $155,692,000
7. San Francisco Giants $154,185,878
8. Texas Rangers $136,036,172
9. Washington Nationals $134,704,437
10. Toronto Blue Jays $132,628,700

Well, relish the wins, especially 2013 for the Boston Fluke, because you probably going to have to wait many many years before another winning season - my last statement is common sense by the way.

Exactamundo.

Not too far behind? Perhaps not to you, or the Koch Brothers, or Joe.T's bookie, but back here on Planet Earth, $41 M buys an awful lot of talent if you don't spend it on guys like Mark Teixeira or CC Sabathia.

The Red Sox won the AL East in 2013. Who finished second? Last? Don't remember? Don't worry, no one else does either.
The Cardinals won the NL Central in 2013. Who finished second? Last? Don't remember? Don't worry, no one else does either.

Everyone will remember who finished LAST in 2014 in the AL East.

And by the way, you are the filthy RICH guy around here rumps, not me, or Joe T's bookie (actually Joe T's bookie probably wishes Joe wasn't his customer). Anyway, I see you - the limousine liberal and ring leader of the New England Merb gang - are back stirring your shit.

2013 for the Boston Fluke

I don't understand this. Firstly, only one third of the teams, after a 162 game season, even make the playoffs. Boston had the best record in the AL and was tied for the best record in baseball. As division winners, they didn't have to play in the Wild Card Game. However, they still had to win one 5 game series and two 7 game series to be crowned champions. They won each of those series with a game to spare. They also had won 2 other championships this century, more than any other team.

A fluke is getting heads 10 times in a row - or, in baseball, winning a few games on lucky bounces, umpire decisions etc.. Winning a championship after being tested for almost 180 games can't be reasonably described as due to chance.

Honestly, if your favorite team had won with exactly the same record, would you question the legitimacy of their victory by calling it a "fluke"?

Absolutely. Look at the Red Sox's record in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

2012, 69 Wins, 93 Losses, Last Place AL East
2013, 97 Wins, 65 Losses, First Place AL East
2014, 71 Wins, 91 Losses, Last Place AL East

3 different seasons and in between Last place finishes, the team wins everything? Yes, it's a fluke.

I am not saying that the players on the 2013 did not play well. They did or they wouldn't have gone so far, but several players played over their norm. In 2014, Boston unloaded a lot of the players who won in 2013 but they have some left. They were a fairly similar team in the beginning of 2014 and as the year went on, they unloaded several. But even with a very similar team in the beginning of 2014 they were not winning games. Boston was 26-29 through May.

In 2013, the MVP of the Red Sox was undoubtedly David Ortiz. Ortiz was 37 in 2013. He was up there in years to have such a season that he had. But if you go through the stats of the players on that team and compare their stats in 2012 and 2014, I bet you will find that 2013 was an anomaly.

Once again, in keeping with your usual MO, you choose to ignore evidence. The 2012 and 2014 teams failed because of injury and (in 2014) because of an excessive reliance on young talent not ready to produce. In both cases, management recognized the team's shortcomings early enough to bail early and plan for the future. The conditions that the Sox set in place for their success in 2013 are quite similar to those that they've set in place for 2014.

On July 21, 2014, the Sox were only five games under .500, 7.5 games back, but recognized that they were going nowhere and bailed on the season in favor of 2015. Two years earlier, on July 19, 2012, they were three games over .500, but 9.5 back. Here, they bailed on the season in favor of building a championship for 2013. The rest of the season, like 2014, was a disaster, but it set in motion the conditions for a World Championship in 2014.

Now, if you go back and look at the 2013 stats that you've obviously totally ignored, you will find that they had a total of one player who played substantially over his career norms: Koji Uehara. A second, Clay Buchholz, was brilliant, but lost half the season to injury and won only 12 games for a team that won the division by 5.5 games.

The Sox right now are short two starting pitchers and a third baseman from having a contending team for 2015. They also have in excess of $50 million to spend for next season. Yankee fans can only wish that Brian Cashman had the foresight to can 2014 in favor of 2015, though he was and is hamstrung by about $100 million in bad contracts (for 2015 alone) that he cannot get rid of.

Rumps, don't waste your keystrokes trying to explain logic to a shit stirrer here. Just look at his "liberal" / "NEMG" comments. He's obviously completely void of any class on any level whatsoever!!

BTW, your comment here is perfect and priceless!!

Major shit stirrers, here? It's the Boston gang here. I don't live New England, K.

As the great Joe T. always says to your posts, he loves the humor when he reads your posts.

The Red Sox have no one left from that fluke season, except for David Ortiz who is 38 (read it 38, rumps. You were knocking Jeter at 35).

A 3rd baseman and 2 starting pitchers away from a contender? And the rest of the bottom dwellers?

The Yankees have 3 bad contracts: Arod who they may be able to void, Teixeira, who is running at $22 million per year until 2016, and Sabathia, who is running $23 million until 2016. Rodriguiez has $61 million left for 3 years. So that's $65 million in bad contracts as you say, not $100 million.

Last place again, chumps.

Napoli, Pedroia, Victorino, Workman, Tazawa, Bogaerts, Britton, Nava, Buchholz. But that's ok; reality never was your strong point. Probably Lester.

Actually, those three are $68 Million, not 65. Add in Beltran and you have $83 million. So I overestimated slightly. Sue me.
