Wow what a game SF v. LAR

Yeah, great game for Bills fans who had to watch players they let go or traded away shine as never before. Both Woods and Watkins over 100 yrds receiving, something that never happened while in a Bills uni, Robey-Coleman with a pick, forced fumble and three unassisted tackles, Goodwin with two long completions...even the announcers were laughing at Buffalo. And thats before even getting into the Hogan and Gillislee fiascos. Pegula should not let his wife run the team and make head coaching hires. She is an airhead.

Watkins got hurt again and his status for future games is undetermined. Look. He's talented as hell. But Sammy Watkins is the Joffrey Lupul of the NFL.

Watkins had to go. He only had a year left on his contract and he would have bolted towards free agency. And he may still once this season ends and likely will. He also was always injured and the few times he wasn't he wasn't a factor in every single game he played. His career so far has been a big disappointment.

I liked Robert Woods as a Buffalo Bill. But he signed a huge contract with the Rams as a free agent and it would have been foolish for the Bills to offer him a similar or bigger deal since Robert Woods is not and never will be a #1 wide receiver in this league. It would have made no sense since the Bills had much urgent needs at other positions and it would have been crazy to throw away that kind of money at the wide receivers position.

The Bills traded Watkins to the Rams expecting Anquan Boldin to be their starting receiver. But a couple of weeks after trade, Boldin surprised everyone by suddenly retiring from football. The Bills couldn't have predicted this. Had they known this it's quite possible they would have hung on to Watkins even though it likely would have been for the rest of the year only and knowing he's injury-prone and likely would have got hurt again.

The Bills have been stocking up on draft picks and trading players who have no future in Buffalo makes sense. Robey-Coleman was a non-factor in Buffalo and Goodwin barely played. He was mostly a punt returner and occasionally played when it was 3rd-and-long or when Watkins or Woods was hurt. No big loss there and easily replaceable.

Look. The former Bills players had a decent game last night against the 49ers. The FUCKING 49ers!!!! One of the worse teams in football!!! Only the Jets are worse and by not that much more!! Okay, maybe the Bears also. But any team would have had a good game against the 49ers last night!! A team with no defence!

The Rams won't make the playoffs this season so who cares how former Bills perform.

Excuse me but the Bills could have kept Sammy Watkins for a further three years. They declined to pick up the option on his rookie deal that would have given them another year and they could have franchised him for a further two. Of course they probably would not have had to franchise him at all because given that they held all the cards he therefore would have been strongly incented to conclude a long term deal with the team. No. Sean McDermott didn't want him because he was one of Whaley's picks, not one of his and McBean's. Oh but he is always injured you say. Watkins played in 37 games his first three years in the league. Julio Jones played in only 34. Why you ask. Well because he had a foot injury that caused him to miss 11games one year. Oh and its exactly the same foot injury that Sammy had and has fully recovered from. Well why didn't Atlanta trade Julio the year after he sat out? Because they are not stupid thats why. Matt Ryan needs to throw the ball to somebody hey and why not julio Jones. Oh but Julio is so much better than Sammy you say. Not. He may be better but the point is they are both elite. For the games he played and the number of targets Sammy Watkins graded out top 5 at his position league wide based on total yards, yards per catch, etc...Oh and thats not with Matt Ryan or Tom Brady throwing him the ball. Thats with, wait for it, Tyrod Taylor, a running back playing the all important position.
Hey, you never, ever trade away an elite WR (unless he's a locker room cancer, and even then Terrel Owens had good runs with SF, Philly and the Cowboys- because he was so damn good).
And you are wrong about Robert Woods too. Robert Woods is a solid # 2 WR in the NFL. He is also BTW one of the best blocking wideouts in the game and, have you noticed, the Bills are a running team. He is actually more valuable to them than to a team that throws the football in a balanced attack. Oh but he signed such a ridiculously generous contract you say. Wrong again. Woods inked a 34Mm 5 yr deal with only 15 MM guaranteed and no signing bonus. Now lets look at a couple of recent WR#2 contracts. How about M. Jones?5yrs, 40 MM 20 guaranteed and with a 8MM signing bonus. How about M. Sanu? 5yrs 32MM 14 guaranteed and with a 7MM signing bonus. These contracts are negotiated by people on both sides who are good at finding fair value. Robert Woods got the contract that he earned and deserved. The Bills were either too cheap or were motivated by a new regime wanting only their guys and if that meant not keeping the talent they actually drafted so be it. Continuity is a great thing right. So vital to stability and ultimately success.
Oh and do you remember Chris Hogan. They offered him nothing. I don't think he was even tendered. Well the NE Patriots, you know, the SB champions, offered him another "ridiculous" deal. And how is he doing in New England? Did you watch the playoffs and SB last year? He doing extremely well. Bill Belichek is no fool.
Bills are going all out to draft a franchise QB next year. Ok, well who is he going to throw the ball too lol? Andre Holmes wont even be there. He will be cut after week 10 because a compensatory 3rd round pick is worth more than he is.
The problem with the Bills was never their receivers. It was with the QB- Drew Bledsoe was the last real one they had. Or, better still, the problem is with new, well intentioned owners who don't know football and a historically disfunctional FO.
I could go on but this post is long enuf as it is.

What happened to EJ Manuel, didn't the Bills draft him in the first round to be their QB? I don't remember the Bills ever having a good QB except Jim Kelly. The Buffalo weather hinders many small handed QBs and some guys are just bad bad weather QBs.

Points well taken but i still completely disagree with you.

But why Doc? Tell me why? Btw I think the Bills have one of the best fanbases in all of football. And they are extremely knowledgeable about the game as a general rule - many of them much more knowledgeable than me. But the team just has not done them right and its a real shame. They deserve so much better. I hope McDermott can turn them around. He is an outstanding defensive coach but I dont know if he knows and understands offence. And I am worried about their OC Dennison. The Broncos fanbase was deliriously happy when he left and Trevor Simian has improved a lot since his departure. I have not been impressed with his playcalling so far. He was a linebacker when he played. What qualifies him to structure an offence?

Yeah EB, Manuel was (and is) a bust. Doug Whaley, the former GM, was good at drafting and finding DBs and Linebackers, positions that he played at Pitt I believe. But unfortunately he was totally clueless when it came to QBs. Manuel was projected as a fifth or sixth round pick by the NE Patriots (not 16 overall, where Manuel went) and they didn't even have him classified as a QB. They slotted him under the caption "athlete" lol. Three days before the draft Bud Elliot, an extremely astute evaluater of talent and very close to the Florida State programme wrote a in depth article ( that you can still read online) explaining in detail why EJ Manuel was going to bust. Drafting Manuel eventually got Whaley fired (and rightly so) as well as spending two firsts on Sammy Watkins. Watkins is a superb talent and I expect him to have a very productive career but in a draft that featured Beckham Jr., Evans (Bucs) and K. Benjamin (Carolina) there was really no reason to do that - except for the fact that Doug Whaley not only didn't know QBs, he didn't know WRs either. Just compare that with your team the Steelers who drafted A. Brown in the 6th round as well as the Clemson guy Bryant in the fourth I believe. Now thats what I call smart.

I agree with you on Watkins' talent, but he does seem like he has been and could be an injury prone guy, which is strange, because he is built like a tank. Ditto with OBJ- he is looking a little injury prone. Of the group you mentioned the guy who has proven to be a horse is the smallest one of the bunch, A. Brown, who seems talented and tough as nails and he goes over the middle and gets crushed regularly. I think it is really hard to draft and evaluate toughness in football. It reminds me that when I was in high school, my high school's football team featured a monster tight end who in high school was around 6'6" and 230 pounds, a monster. However I noticed that whenever he took even a decent hit, his bell would be rung and he would have to come out of the game. Due to his size he was recruited by Division I-A colleges, but at the college level he was injury prone and ineffective due to constant injuries.

The Giants use to have a WR, Amani Toomer, who was big but very erratic in making difficult catches, but he did manage to stay healthy and play most of the team's games. Later on the Giants won a Super Bowl with Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz as their starting WRs, and in the playoffs that led to that Super Bowl win, those two guys had the most productive playoffs in NFL history, arguably, by a tandem of WRs. But in subsequent years neither one could stay healthy. I understand that football is the hardest of all sports in which to achieve longevity (especially for RBs and WRs), but if a guy has an injury history I would be very leery of him as a high draft pick.

Well EB Watkins is actually a pretty tough guy. He played 13 games his second year with broken ribs following a very dirty knee he took. I understand that college ball ain't the pros but he was sturdy at Clemson where he was used a lot as in effect a running back - quick throws to the flats from which he got lots of YAC. I expect him to do very well this year if for no other reason than its a contract year for him and he needs to be paid.
Yeah like the Steelers the Giants are pretty good at evaluating WRs. I remember Toomer. He was good. Nicks and especially Cruz were good finds (I think Cruz was undrafted), but I agree with you A. Brown is the most ridiculous talent of all. How did he fall to the sixth. Wide receiver version of Tom Brady.

For me the best QB in the league is Aaron Rodgers. He's unbelievable! On another note, Ben Roetlisberger seems to be slowing down. I still can't believe how poorly he performed yesterday. I also can't believe how unlucky the NY Giants were in losing all three of their starting wide receivers: Sheppard, Marshall & Beckham jr. Their chances of reaching the playoffs are not very good anymore.

The Bills played a tough game in sloppy weather. They lost several starters to injuries during the game and the bye-week couldn't come soon enough for them.

So many early season ending injuries to bonafide stars! Watt, Merciless, OBJ, Rodgers..how many more will go down? I’m guessing it’ll be Gronk again..that guy is made out of glass. On a side note, anyone see Fournette’s TD run? He was clocked at over 20 mph..the second fastest in NFL history behind himself earlier this year at 22 mph

WOW..what a game tonight! Came down to the final play of the game after KC screws up multiple times with holding penalties to give Oakland multiple shots at the end zone.
