Excuse me but the Bills could have kept Sammy Watkins for a further three years. They declined to pick up the option on his rookie deal that would have given them another year and they could have franchised him for a further two. Of course they probably would not have had to franchise him at all because given that they held all the cards he therefore would have been strongly incented to conclude a long term deal with the team. No. Sean McDermott didn't want him because he was one of Whaley's picks, not one of his and McBean's. Oh but he is always injured you say. Watkins played in 37 games his first three years in the league. Julio Jones played in only 34. Why you ask. Well because he had a foot injury that caused him to miss 11games one year. Oh and its exactly the same foot injury that Sammy had and has fully recovered from. Well why didn't Atlanta trade Julio the year after he sat out? Because they are not stupid thats why. Matt Ryan needs to throw the ball to somebody hey and why not julio Jones. Oh but Julio is so much better than Sammy you say. Not. He may be better but the point is they are both elite. For the games he played and the number of targets Sammy Watkins graded out top 5 at his position league wide based on total yards, yards per catch, etc...Oh and thats not with Matt Ryan or Tom Brady throwing him the ball. Thats with, wait for it, Tyrod Taylor, a running back playing the all important position.
Hey, you never, ever trade away an elite WR (unless he's a locker room cancer, and even then Terrel Owens had good runs with SF, Philly and the Cowboys- because he was so damn good).
And you are wrong about Robert Woods too. Robert Woods is a solid # 2 WR in the NFL. He is also BTW one of the best blocking wideouts in the game and, have you noticed, the Bills are a running team. He is actually more valuable to them than to a team that throws the football in a balanced attack. Oh but he signed such a ridiculously generous contract you say. Wrong again. Woods inked a 34Mm 5 yr deal with only 15 MM guaranteed and no signing bonus. Now lets look at a couple of recent WR#2 contracts. How about M. Jones?5yrs, 40 MM 20 guaranteed and with a 8MM signing bonus. How about M. Sanu? 5yrs 32MM 14 guaranteed and with a 7MM signing bonus. These contracts are negotiated by people on both sides who are good at finding fair value. Robert Woods got the contract that he earned and deserved. The Bills were either too cheap or were motivated by a new regime wanting only their guys and if that meant not keeping the talent they actually drafted so be it. Continuity is a great thing right. So vital to stability and ultimately success.
Oh and do you remember Chris Hogan. They offered him nothing. I don't think he was even tendered. Well the NE Patriots, you know, the SB champions, offered him another "ridiculous" deal. And how is he doing in New England? Did you watch the playoffs and SB last year? He doing extremely well. Bill Belichek is no fool.
Bills are going all out to draft a franchise QB next year. Ok, well who is he going to throw the ball too lol? Andre Holmes wont even be there. He will be cut after week 10 because a compensatory 3rd round pick is worth more than he is.
The problem with the Bills was never their receivers. It was with the QB- Drew Bledsoe was the last real one they had. Or, better still, the problem is with new, well intentioned owners who don't know football and a historically disfunctional FO.
I could go on but this post is long enuf as it is.
