Fired by Briere due to "differences of opinion".....not surprising since Torts is a highly opinionated man. I am sure they had fights over player personnel, in fact Briere hinted at it in the article below. What is interesting is that they chose to go with Shaw, a Tortorella confidante, soldier and loyalist:

He has to score 5 goals in 9 games. Doable, but not sure if I would bet on it.

Roy: Duclair 'god-awful' during Isles' 4-1 loss
In the heat of the Eastern Conference playoff race, and with his team struggling, New York Islanders coach Patrick Roy said Anthony Duclair was "god-awful" in a loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and that the veteran is failing to meet expectations.

Good question. I honestly do not think the Islanders are that good and even when Barry Trotz had them overachieving a few years back I did not think they were all that good. However Roy has a team with .500 talent playing .500 hockey. So
is he meeting expectations? Probably not. Is he "God awful", like he said Duclair is? I don't think so.
His comments were a bit harsh, and now that Roy has coached in NY for a while I feel like he has been emboldened by the fans' lack of toleration for poor play and poor effort. Whereas in Montreal there may be a tendency for fans to give passes to players who have poor performances and poor effort nights, NY fans are uniformly unforgiving. It's true of the NY hockey fans and the NY baseball fans. So I think Roy maybe feels emboldened to dress down a player publicly and win points with the NY fans and media, which deflects the attention off of his less than stellar coaching efforts. In the past, NY fans and media have embraced coaches like this.
