Hello all/Bonjour a tous,

M11. sometimes it takes a shock to make people open their eyes. I in no way inferred that Merlot supported those acts. I have edited my post to indicate that no accusations were intended.

Thanks. But next time I'm sending...CHARA! ;)

The words I used may sound harsh. But I will explain. The reason I say that is because it is the French people who can keep the language and culture alive. They got to teach it to their children, speak it among themselves. If they do this the language and culture will very much stay alive. Obviously the language will not be the dominant one. But the issue here is that they want French to dominate all other languages.

But there is a flaw in your logic. For instance the English have not artificially changed the plane field so that English dominates all other languages. It simply does. If things were left to progress naturally, English would dominate for obvious reasons.

Thanks for the response. As usual, you are a rational and well-mannered gentleman. Please excuse me for using some strong words previously that were not necessary in my reply to you. The "survival of the fittest" philosophy is always disturbing to me. To me it is barbaric, not compassionate and human.

I disagree. I read that the Saskatchewan legislature eliminated the guarantee of bi-lingual protection, and that affected all of Canada. That changed the playing field...somewhat. But that is just another detail.

You can see from my messages, I believe there is right and wrong on both sides of this issue. You and I agree on some things, disagree on others. Unfortunately, we have seen a lot of evidence of very strong intransigence on both sides that will not compromise. Clearly, this is a microcosm of society in Montreal. It's tragic because the extreme partisans make a solution much tougher always, and the issue is very tough without them.

In any matter, it's all very sad.

regrettably,

Merlot

Too young to remember terrorists being allowed to go free to Cuba and return years later to a hero's welcome.

Hero’s welcome? Could you please refresh my memory? Was there a party or something?

But you are wrong. It is neither legal and is considered unconstitutional. But they used the notwithstanding clause to bypass the human right of freedom of expression.

For our education, would you mind telling us:

1 What is not legal in the present language laws of Québec?

2 What is considered unconstitutional in the present language law of Québec, and by what tribunal?

3 How does the withstanding clause apply to protect provisions of the present language laws of Québec?

The French are so poorly treated outside of Quebec.

http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/0...build-15m-school-for-41-francophone-students/

Citing the need to protect minority-language rights, a Yukon court has ordered the government to give its lone French-language school $2-million and begin a multi-million-dollar school expansion to house an arts studio, separate classes for every grade and space for a student radio station.
In a French-only ruling released this week, Yukon Supreme Court Justice Vital Ouellette ordered the government to build a $15-million high school within two years to house the board’s 41 French high school students.

Not bad. $15 Million for 41 students. And they already have a school in place. And a French school board. To administer one school. It must be terrible to be treated so poorly.
