The Carthaginian military commander Hannibal Barca is considered one of the world’s greatest military leaders and one of the greatest generals of antiquity. Known simply as “Hannibal,” in his quest to take Rome during the Second Punic War, he marched an army, including elephants, across the Pyrenees and Alps to take victory in Italy. Ulysse Nardin depicts this journey in movement and sound on the limited edition Ulysse Nardin Hannibal Minute Repeater Westminster Carillon Tourbillon Jaquemarts. The dial has a display of Hannibal on horseback with his elephants and regiment of warriors by his side. These mechanized figures, known as “jaquemarts,” as well as the mountainous backdrop and surrounding terrain, are hand-carved from 18k white gold and mounted on granite sourced from the same mountain chain Hannibal and his brigade crossed in the third century B.C. The caliber UN-78 movement contains a one-minute tourbillon, integrated and visible on the dial, and a Westminster Carillon minute repeater. The minute repeater has four gongs, each with a different tone. The four gongs sound in three different sequences for the quarters. Hannibal The jaquemarts on the dial are synchronized with the sound of the gongs and move to the minutes, quarters and hours, or to a combination of these units of time, displaying the narrative of Hannibal and his journey. The timepiece is housed in a 44mm platinum case with a sapphire caseback. It is limited to 30 pieces.

Raymond weil maestro frank sinatra limited edition

Greetings all

RAYMOND WEIL INTRODUCES MAESTRO FRANK SINATRA LIMITED EDITION

Swiss watchmaker RAYMOND WEIL is proud to join the Sinatra family to commemorate the hundred year anniversary of the birth of Frank Sinatra. As part of the “Sinatra 100” centennial celebration, RAYMOND WEIL has introduced a special limited edition timepiece reinterpreted from its classic maestro collection.

The maestro Frank Sinatra Limited Edition watch pays homage to the legendary artist and his iconic persona. With restraint, elegance and precision, the timepiece evokes a sense of admiration for the entertainer’s illustrious career.

“It is a great honor to have partnered with the Frank Sinatra Enterprises to create a design that celebrates this special occasion. Frank Sinatra was a charismatic character who left an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of many generations; he embodied an era, a style, and a tradition and was above all a passionate man of extraordinary talent. As a music-loving family company, it is perfectly fitting that we pay tribute to this undisputed maestro of music with a limited edition piece in our maestro collection,” says Elie Bernheim, CEO, RAYMOND WEIL.

“Frank Sinatra understood the vital importance of time and when preparing his music he employed what he had named ‘the heartbeat tempo.’ For that reason, he insisted that his wristwatch would have the utmost mechanical integrity and construction to guarantee many years of faithful and accurate service,” says Frank Sinatra, Junior. “Master of horology, RAYMOND WEIL has steadfastly maintained this degree of excellence and in the centennial celebration of the birth of Frank Sinatra, I am proud to see my father’s name associated with this magnificent timepiece.”

The timepiece features a mechanical movement with automatic winding housed in a 39.5 mm stainless steel case. Reminiscent of the famed “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” the hands, index markers, and contour of the date window are a bright blue hue, against the backdrop of a silver dial. A transparent caseback boasts a special Sinatra Centennial insignia, while the twelve marker, highlighted as the only Roman numeral, signifies Sinatra’s December12th birthday. Also in reference to his birthday, only 1,212 pieces of the maestro Frank Sinatra Limited Edition watch will be available, starting June 2015.

Among his many accomplishments, Sinatra earned a total of 21 Grammys, three Oscars and two Golden Globes, frequently earning him the title of one of the greatest entertainers of all time. And yet the leader of the Rat Pack was not just one of the most renowned singers of his generation, he was, and remains a true icon of elegance and style. His extraordinary voice, impeccable suits, iconic tipped hat and soulful blue eyes all contributed to his legendary status. Throughout 2015, Sinatra will be globally honored with special tributes, partnerships, book and video releases, television and film events, performances and much more, including the Grammy Museum’s “Sinatra: An American Icon” exhibit hosted by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

Originally, the "In The Pocket" watch was inspired by the porte-oignon given to Jacqueline Hermès by her father in 1912. The porte-oignon allowed Jacqueline, a keen horsewoman, to fasten her pocket watch to her wrist while she remained active.

What you can put your pocket watch on your wrist !!!!
Remember that story about two Portuguese guys who wanted also their chronograph on their wrist !

Hermes beautiful leather top quality and I love the fact that wrist leather band covers and protect the pocket watch !

History in Pocket watches "The Packard "from Patek

Greetings all

https://www.google.ca/search?q=The+...niv&sa=X&ei=vg2UVZW8JdefyATM-odY&ved=0CBwQsAQ

If you have read Stacy Perman’s recent book, A Grand Complication, you will know that Patek Philippe created its first so-called grand complication in 1927. Known as “The Packard,” it was manufactured at the behest of American industrialist James Ward Packard of Packard Automobile fame.

Today, this relatively soberly styled pocket watch housed in 18-karat gold—a true product of its heritage, its tradition and its maker’s style—can be found in the incredible Patek Philippe Museum, a unique institution that documents not only the brand’s own history, but the entire history of watchmaking. (In fact, I would go so far as to say that this museum houses the most important collection of horological highlights to be found anywhere at any time.) The Packard contains ten customized complications including an equation of time display calibrated to Warren, Ohio (where Packard lived) shown by a gold hand ending in a sun (today a common sign denoting the hand for the equation of time). A blue enamel moon phase display is nestled inside a subdial at 12 o’clock that also shows the month. Across the dial at 6 o’clock, a subdial containing three small hands provides information on the weekday, date, and leap year. Naturally, the calendar functions are all perpetual. The subdial at 9 o’clock shows the time of sunrise, while that at 3 o’clock displays the time of sunset; both are specifically calibrated to the latitude and longitude of Warren, Ohio. The slide on the side of the case allowed the carillon (three-gong) minute repeater to ring on demand. Popping open the back by pressing on the crown allowed Packard to view a blue enamel celestial chart of 500 stars reproducing Warren, Ohio’s night sky that rotated daily to display the real-time view outside Packard’s mansion at night.

The front of the Packard by Patek Philippe

The Packard was trumped by Henry Graves’ Supercomplication, which was delivered to the American banker on January 19, 1933. Comprising 24 complications, it is the most complicated (pocket) watch in history. Less decorative in appearance than the Packard, the focus remained on its complicated insides, which include a celestial chart of the night sky over New York City (Graves’ residence), a Westminster chime minute repeater, sidereal time, an alarm, a perpetual calendar, a split-second chronograph, and times of sunrise and sunset calibrated to New York City. Comprising 900 components, it took Patek Philippe eight years to complete.

The back of the Graves Supercomplication

Calibre 89, introduced for the brand’s 150th anniversary in 1989, continues the remarkable run of the Geneva-based legend’s record-breaking grand complication timepieces. Thirty-three functions make the timepiece weighing 1.1 kilograms and comprising 1,728 components the current world record-holder as the most complicated portable timekeeper in history.

Great history for Pattek!
And all of these magnificent mechanism couldn't be without Abraham Breguet who did invented the complication pocket watch and the first wrist watch with as many complication as possible in is time ! The pocket watch made for Marie Antoinette still is one of the greatest achievement in haute horlogerie !

Bare Bones: 10 Interesting Skeleton Watches

http://www.watchtime.com/blog/skeleton-watches/

June 19, 2015 By Mark Bernardo 14 Comments
In skeleton watches, the watchmaker strips the watch’s dial and/or movement to their bare essentials, revealing as much of the watch’s interior as possible. For skeleton watch fans who love the technical “openwork” artistry that goes into skeleton watchmaking, these timepieces give them a detailed look at a watch’s inner workings. Below we take a look at 10 skeleton watches introduced in recent years.
The Blancpain Squelette 8 Jours (Ref. 6633-1500-55B), from the brand’s elegant Villeret collection, offers one of the most intricately executed openworked movements on the market. The manufacture movement on display through the front and back sapphire crystals is the manual-wind Calibre 1333SQ, which is equipped with a titanium balance, a Breguet balance spring, and three series-coupled barrels that provide the timepiece an impressive eight-day (“8 Jours” en Francais) power reserve. Click here for more details on the Blancpain Squelette 8 Jours.

At Baselworld 2014, Chronoswiss released, for the first time ever, a skeletonized version of its sporty Chronoswiss Timemaster Chronograph, which allows wearers an unencumbered view of the watch’s filigreed and decorated automatic movement and offers two different dials, both surrounded by robust, DLC-coated bezels. Both versions of the Chronoswiss Timemaster Chronograph Skeleton have stainless steel cases (44 mm in diameter and 15.3 mm thick) with bezels made of polished, black DLC. German luxury watch brand Glashütte Original introduced the Senator Manual Winding Skeletonized Edition at Baselworld 2014. It features an all-new, skeletonized movement created in-house, Glashütte Original Caliber 49-18. The watch, which has a 42-mm-diameter case made of polished 18k rose gold, showcases its intricately openworked movement in the center of its galvanized silver, openworked dial. A black railroad track minutes ring and finely drawn Roman numerals decorate the dial’s periphery, while blued, stainless steel hour and minute hands keep the time. Click here for more on the watch.

This year, Hublot introduced a new addition to its line of Classic Fusion skeleton watches: the Hublot Classic Fusion Classico Ultra-Thin All Black. The ultra-thin watch has diameter of 45 mm and a case thickness of just 8.3 mm. The skeletonized movement, Hublot’s manual-winding HUB1300 “Classico” caliber, was designed and built entirely at the brand’s manufacture in Nyon. Composed of 130 parts, including 23 jewels, it measures a wafer-thin 2.9 mm in thickness. Because of the openworked structure of the movement, wearers can view the watch’s regulating organ, its balance and its escapement, at work even while they’re reading the time. The Classico beats at a frequency of 21,600 vph (3 Hz) and boasts a 90-hour power reserve. The Classic Fusion Classico Ultra-Thin All Black retails for $18,300.

ROLEX DAYTONA Stainless Steel

Hello all

The incredible story of a famous watch http://rolexblog.blogspot.ca/2010/02/2010-story-preview-complete-history-of.html

Rolex In The Racing World
Man & His Machines

Rolex was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf. Around the same time, the German and American automobile industries were also coming to life. There are many parallels between fine automobiles and fine watches, and the relationship between Rolex and auto racing is amazing.

The Zenith between Rolex and Racing is summed up in the Rolex Daytona, and in order to best understand why, we must explore history. World fascination with the auto really began after World War I, as did mankind's fascination with the wristwatch.

The was a very famous auto racer named Sir Malcolm Campbell who really popularized auto racing. Sir Malcolm Campbell was known as The Speed King. Back in 2009, I wrote a super extensive story about Sir Malcolm Campbell which I highly recommend you read.

Sir Malcolm Campbell is picture above and below. He had an amazing career and set many, many land-speed records in his famous Blue Bird race cars. Sir Malcolm Campbell was British, but he used to come over to the United States, to Daytona Beach, Florida where he kept setting one world speed record after another. It seems a little strange today, but back then he would set these records driving on the actual beach, on the sand, as pictured below.

Rolex and Hans Wilsdorf were extremely impressed with Sir Malcolm Campbell's achievements and lifestyle, and in many ways believed he symbolized the Rolex lifestyle, so he became Rolex's first real Ambassador. It is true, Mercedes Glietze was Rolex's first brand Ambasador, but she really only represented Rolex for one event or record, whereas Sir Malcolm Campbell's Ambassadorship lasted for many years, and Rolex even came out with a Malcolm Campbell Rolex model.
