Not sure if ppl are aware but some big busts went down this week in the asian in-call scene .. MtlTopEscorts was the first to go, along with MAE. Then Tony from (Darllie/Tony) got picked up and some
other operator hosting on Notre-Dame, forget the name. Oddly enough, only MAE88 was left unscathed (for now .. ?)

A buddy of mine who works in anti-gang unit had told me in january something big was coming down in that scene. Don't be the one caught with your pants down in the coming while. There's more to come.

Sadly I think it will be the opposite. Asian sex workers immigrants are doubly stigmatized because people think they are more likely to be illegal or trafficked or exploited. I suppose serious agencies are less likely to hire recent immigrants (women on visas can't even legally work at a strip club), many clients avoid them just to be safe and they don't have enough resource and language skill to be good independents. Busts like this will make people avoid them even more, so they will have even worse job prospect.

According to the report, they did not come here against their will. This is called smuggling, helping an immigrant to get here illegally. The RCMP claims that once they were here they were made to work in exploitive conditions. But they knew in advance that they were coming here for sex work. Smuggled people are easier to exploit since they are afraid to go to the police because of their illegal status. This actually has nothing to do with the legality of sex work; it happens in all sorts of perfectly legal jobs. But if the job is criminalized they are even less likely to seek help from the police.

Also, in general, illegal residents often don't come illegally. Workers can come here on a tourist visa and then never go back. Most of the illegal mexicans in the US come with temporary work visas and then simply never go back.

We have no way of knowing if they knew they were coming to Canada for sex work. The article says they were forced into sex work after arrival.

I remember reading someone that they knew why they were coming here, but that they were supposedly deceived about the work conditions they would get. But like you say we have no clue and the journalists are no better. But the only charges laid are for prostitution. There are no accusations so far for any trafficking-related crimes.

I also heard that on the radio, and all the info seemed to come from the official announcements, which typically paint a dirtier picture.
So I'd tend to think that at least some of the girls indeed knew they were coming for sex work, but may have been deceived about the conditions (which could happen in any business, but maybe with lesser consequences)

Human trafficking charges were laid today againt two of the accused in Toronto. RCMP has declared that the evidence is overwhelming. If it is so, one wonders why the charges were not announced yesterday. They desperately need trafficking convictions to remain credible in the public eyes. However, their overwhelming evidence often crumbles before the courts because it's pretty hard to deal with consenting "victims". They are overcrowding the courts with the hope to beef up the conviction stats. I find it amazing to see the RCMP (I'm not talking about the SPVM), and the Calgary police department play the Conservative's game a fews month before the elections. I feel arrogant enough to predict, yet again, a failure on the human trafficking charges.

I guess those charges are more tricky to prove. Prostitution charges are straightforward, but it takes time to convince the women to cooperate and testify for trafficking charges. That's why they like prostitution laws so much. It's much easier to lay charges on pimps when consent is irrelevant. On a smaller scale, when the SPVM suspected an incall of exploitation they could simply use the bawdy house law instead of having to prove actual exploitation. It's very possible that these women were abused and exploited. It would not surprise me. But in many countries prostitution laws are just a second layer of immigration control and it's hard to know what is the truth about any specific case.

I am not sure I believe everything said in the news because it sounds like a typical news narrative and I don't trust them at all on certain subjects like prostitution. I am nowhere near an insider in the business so I have no idea what really happens. Yet some people have no idea what happens either but they have this specific trafficked girls narrative. By the way, I was never really into Asians, and I don't think I ever used Asian companies so basically I have no experience at all with them. Also I heard they often use fake pictures and fake ages and I wasn't really interested. So I can't have an opinion on how they were treated. IMO girls who do this job deserve the money we give them and this should allow them to have a comfortable life. A pimp that takes all the money totally disgusts me. Most of my favorite escorts over the years are richer than me judging from their places of residences and their personal stories. I believe that those who are in the country illegally should not be here though.

It is not related to the title of the thread...(but still in the same perspective)...i was just listening to A&E channel...the title is 8 MINUTES (first episode tonight)....it is a pastor with helping advocate who try to help women that are under age,beating,etc by their booker or else...i had to say it did really touch me and also the last lady...GINA...her sad story did touch me also ( they say that she did get over the business and getting some help from them now)...but some do try but they take like almost 5 to 7 times before being able to get out of their booker etc...very sad i have to say to hear that,i know it is for the money but nobody and for sure no women should suffer like this and being against their will..grrrrrrr

According to some posters the very fact that trafficking charges were laid is strong evidence that no trafficking occurred. Your mind must be playing tricks on you.

While all of MERB is focused on this, are there any resources in Montreal for girls we might think are trafficked or working against their will?

I don't use the Asian agencies and don't expect to have this situation, but asking as a Public Service Announcement.
