Can you kindly please provide your recommendations for authentic French restaurants in Montreal and Quebec City.

I love duck confit and rabbit. I want to eat dishes that French families cook at home to celebrate their French culture and history. I want to experience the Quebecoise culture.

I apologize in advance for not monitoring this thread actively. I appreciate your recommendations. I will try your recommendations when I am in Montreal or Quebec City.

agree with captn renault. Express is an institution.

I also like Lemeac, La Chronique and Cafe Cherrier.

The best French chef in montreal is Jerome Ferrer. His restaurant Europea is on the expensive side but a unique experience.

I love both and hope to visit both, although I would prefer to try restaurants that serve Quebecois meals since they are harder to find outside of Quebec province. France "French restaurants" could be found in most major cities globally.

I recently had an opportunity to take another long stroll in the Plateau -- great vibe and even the ready-to-eat food at local bakeries there are great.

Yes, Jalimon, you're right about Jerome Ferrer's new Europea is (very) expensive and an experience to savor (but I still left hungry).

I'd love to have hearty meals at Quebecois restaurants. I will try L'Express too one day.

The late Anthony Bourdain's (whose father from French, I believe) Parts Unknown episode on Montreal, which I recall seeing in 2013, helped solidify my love for Montreal. I wish I could dine at the restaurants featured in that episode; the train scene was great!

Joe Beef was great. I went there with a couple of Merbites. The rabbit was excellent.

Ho check Camp Chasse et Peche. I had one of most wonderful meal ever in this old port restaurant few years ago!

L'Express is a institution for French cuisine. The menu didn't change since 1980, but there's a new chef since a few years and the quality has declined since then.

I agree, le petit Extra is a hidden treasure !

If you're in Old Montreal, Holder can be a good place. Especially if you're looking for meat. Not a place for vegetarians.

Jérôme Ferrer is a King of marketing but he's know in Montreal cook community ; food prepared and reheated in a industrial way.

Wow. Thanks neverbored and GL. Looking at the menus make me hungry, very hungry.

I'm going to write down all suggestions and pick a few to go try. I'm certainly going to put some weight on :)

GL -- I agree, Jerome Ferrer is certainly a KING of marketing -- his new Europa is more entertainment than dinning. Prices are high but he has to recoup all his investments and then try to make a profit and keep his employees and chefs happy.

Beyond factory techniques that take away all the magic of gastronomy, what shocks me with Jérome Ferrer is that he publishes books to say how important it is to treat his cooks well, but he does the opposite. I don't think that the cook and chef who work at Europea feel happy with their minimum wedge. Every cook who worked for him told me horror stories ; 14-hour shifts, no break, no right to eat, not even to taste the food they serve. I know, that’s how it used to work. That’s how my first jobs in the kitchen were, but things change and it’s no longer a way to manage a kitchen in 2019. There will always be people who go to work for him because he's famous, but people don't stay more than a month or two.

I second Neverbored, Old school French is getting really hard to find in Montreal.
