Really.

So who was Ruth traded for??????????

You're baseball knowledge is almost as bad as your hockey sense (lack of). Ruth was sold for $125,000 and a loan of $300,000. There was no player trade. DUH!

Perfect record Iggy. You never let the truth see the light in you.

Bravo.

Merlot

Gee Merlot. Trading a player for money is still a trade. Talk about DUH.

Figure this coming from a Republican. Further proof that words mean nothing to you. A trade is a trade. A sale is a sale. A sale is only a trade when viewed through a distorted lens. Thanks for confirming what we already knew.

Here you go Rumps (so appropriately named since you advertised about Lucille. Where you keep her, Rumps?)

from the dictionary, Rumps. Distorted lens? Libs like you have distortion down pat.

Exactly, without payment of money. Thanks.

Rumps,

Shame on you. Iggy has given the word (he screwed up and now has to cover his butt with another fake rationale) and the sycophants must agree.

and look like a fool?

You mean like..."I agree with Iggy".

Well the only way to settle this is the original source of the times:

yankees-buy-babe-ruth-article-3.jpg

Yankees BUY Ruth...Oh my goodness, you just got owned. Ooops, I forgot who you belong to...

Tell us DD, when you buy something with cash how often do you say...I want to TRADE some cash for that. BWAH!!!!!!

Cheers,

Merlot

Iggy, good luck trying to get those guys follow the rules of the thread. Rarely do they follow ANY rules.

By the way, this is a very good baseball thread & we should all appreciate that we're allowed to have one. So i'd encourage everyone to stop the nonsense & respect the rules imposed by the thread starter. That's the least we owe him for starting this wonderful baseball thread.

Thanks Doc, it is nice to see a thread go well for once and only in the last day or so has it started to deteriorate just a little, but it has not gone that far off pace and there are only a couple days left until this thread gets retired as spring training is coming to a close. Been a great spring for your Jays and especially Canada's own, Brett Lawrie, one of my favorite baseball players, who has been tearing the cover off the baseball. Btw, I love your signature, perfect time of year to have a baseball themed sig, but not sure that song has much to do with the red sox. Is that some sort of take off on Sweet Caroline???? Anyways, cant wait for the season to start for all of our teams, and am counting down to the days in which I will be heading to the Bronx to watch my Yanks and to Toronto to watch my second fav baseball team. Go Yanks and Go Blue Jays!

Andrew Bailey headed for surgery; Beckett next?

The Boston Red Sox thought they had Jonathan Papelbon's replacement in Andrew Bailey, but the closer may not be ready to step in for a while.

Red Sox team doctors recommended that Bailey get surgery on the injured thumb of his pitching hand, according to a report in The Boston Globe. The right-hander will get a second opinion from Dr. Robert Graham in Cleveland and could undergo a procedure later Tuesday if the doctor agrees with the diagnosis. It's not clear how long he would be out if he needs surgery.

Red Sox starter Josh Beckett also will visit Graham Tuesday to have his injured thumb checked out, according to a FoxSports.com report. He saw Dr. Mark Bagg in San Antonio Monday and wants another opinion to ease his mind.

The Red Sox have said that Beckett will make his scheduled first start Saturday at Detroit.

Manager Bobby Valentine said Monday that Beckett threw 100 pitches Sunday in a controlled bullpen session and "felt great."

It remains unclear how Beckett injured his thumb, also on his pitching hand. Valentine said Beckett has "a little history with it," saying it's not a blister but "just a little situation."

Valentine said Monday that Mark Melancon could serve as the closer if Bailey isn't ready, but that he'd be comfortable with a number of different options.

Valentine said he believes Bailey injured the thumb March 21 in Bradenton in a 6-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and pitched with the injury Wednesday in a minor league game.

But no one appears to be sure, including Bailey, who was not available for comment Monday.

"Because we said Andrew was going to pitch in the ninth inning, we also have to have somebody else, because to have a winning streak, you often have to win a lot of games in a row where the closer can't close every game," Valentine said.

Valentine said he will not finalize the composition of the bullpen until after Tuesday's game against Washington at Nationals Park.

It's confirmed! Andrew Bailey to undergo surgery; will likely be out for most of the regular season

Boston Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey will have surgery on his right thumb on Wednesday to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament, the team said in a statement on Tuesday.

Bailey was examined Monday in Boston and Tuesday in Cleveland. The surgery is scheduled to be performed by Dr. Thomas Graham in Cleveland, the statement said.

The UCL is located at the base of the thumb and surgery typically requires three months of recovery, although the Red Sox have not placed a timetable on Bailey's return.

Bailey apparently suffered the injury in a collision during a game against the Pirates in Bradenton on March 21.

Earlier Tuesday, manager Bobby Valentine said only that Bailey likely will be out for "a while" with a thumb injury on his right pitching hand, leaving the team to fill a hole at the back of the bullpen with Opening Day looming.

Before the Red Sox's game in Washington, Valentine didn't name an interim closer but said he envisioned one person would take the bulk of the save opportunities rather than employ a closer by committee. Valentine said he wanted to speak with the player before announcing it.

The candidates for the job would seem to be Mark Melancon, who closed for the Houston Astros last season or Alfredo Aceves. Daniel Bard, who was moved to the rotation, has been mentioned as a candidate to go back to the bullpen, but Cherington shot that down.

"[Bard] is going to pitch Game 5 in Toronto and we're committed to him as a starter right now," Cherington said, according to NESN.

Valentine said the closer's role "will evolve early in the season. I am confident we have pitchers that can get the final out of the game. It is just the rest of the (bullpen) that is a work in progress. I would be telling you something that was less than truthful if it was something we had prepared for. I like to think that we have a plan in place, that we have a person that we can single out for that (closer's) role, along with others who can do it when he is not available. That is how it was when Andrew was there."

Red Sox starter Josh Beckett is also in Cleveland getting his right thumb examined by Graham, a noted hand and wrist specialist who previously performed surgeries on Kevin Youkilis and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Beckett had his thumb examined on Monday by Dr. Mark Bagg in San Antonio and wanted another opinion to ease his mind.

"The good news is the situations do not seem to be the same. The bad news is they don't seem to be the same," Valentine said with a wry smile, talking about the injuries to both pitchers. "One seems to be a problem and one seems not to be. Beckett is the latter."

Valentine said he fully expects Beckett to make his scheduled start on Saturday.

Asked to describe the difference in the injuries, Cherington said: "[It] is different because we think it's more an of acute injury. We think it was suffered when he was in a collision in Bradenton [March 21]. He was covering first and collided with Alex Presley and fell.

"At the time, he didn't think anything of it, but he started to experience some soreness shortly after that and then went back and looked back at the video and he definitely landed on the thumb. He never had any thumb soreness before that. You never know for sure, but that's a possibility that's what did it. Any time you have more of an acute injury you have to get to the bottom of how bad it is and whether it can be managed conservatively or not.''

Valentine said Monday that Beckett threw 100 pitches on Sunday in a controlled bullpen session and "felt great."

It remains unclear how Beckett injured his thumb. Valentine said Beckett has "a little history with it," saying it's not a blister but "just a little situation."

Valentine also said he discussed the Opening Day roster with Cherington on the flight from Florida to Washington, D.C., Monday night.

"We had extensive meetings this morning with coaches and we're all pretty well set," Valentine said of the roster. He added the roster would not be announced until the 11th hour.

I'm not a Red Sox fan, but i'm sure their fans are biting their nails as the season is about to open on a low note. This must be one of the worse endings to spring training for Red Sox fans, no? New manager (and the jury is out on him), new closer (wait, he's now likely out for the season), their top set-up man (and one of the best in the game, i must admit) is now in the starting rotation, their top starter might also be heading to the DL, Papi is filthy rich but getting very old, their captain who screwed Heidi Watney is now retired, new shortstop, etc. But most important.....NO MORE BEER & POPEYE'S FRIED CHICKEN IN THE CLUBHOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you want worse? Okay, here goes......THEY HAVE TO PLAY ANOTHER SEASON IN THAT RUNDOWN JUNKYARD SOME CALL FENWAY PARK!!!

Terrible way to start off the season.............terrible!

The loss of andrew bailey (who?) is already paying off after just one game. Alfredo Aceves is NOT Jonathon Papelbon. (who today got his first of MANY saves for the Philadelphia Phillies)...... Great comeback win by the Blue Jays today!

Red Sox not off to a good start, Mark Melancon to be DFA'd by the All Star break?.

Very true, Mariano has roughly 400 MORE saves and 4 more rings than Paps, not to mention he is a sure fire first ballot hall of famer. Papelbon is very good rumps and I wish him much success in the rest of his career, but correct, Mariano is not JP, he is simply, the best in the game, now and all time. Papelbon however, IS better than anything the red sox have. And to think the red sox did not even make him and offer. tisk tisk :nono:

You are absolutely correct, Iggy, except for one word, the one I highlighted. Time marches on and it will march on for the 42 year old Rivera as it has marched on for the corpse of Derek Jeter and the greatly diminished Alex Rodriguez. Right now, 2012, Rivera isn't worth of carrying Papelbon's shorts.

Still waiting for your uncle, Mod 8, to deliver you the suspension he promised you last week. The Yankees had the Joba rules; apparently merb has the iggy rules.
