According to that registry the Park Central in NYC had bed bug reports in June. I was there 2 weeks ago and saw an SP. No bed bugs so I guess I got lucky. The hotel was very busy because it was Fashion Week Sept. 9-15 and the hotel is located on 7th Avenue a/k/a Fashion Ave.

The better hotels will take steps to deal with bed bugs and the problems they cause. The Econolodges will not. That is really the bottom line. If you decide to save some money and stay at the Econolodge and the bed bugs bite up that big body and suck out some of its blood, Econolodge ain't gonne be paying Breadman's medical bills. It's all going to be on you dude. And that is the simple truth.

On the plus side, if you like Cowgirl or another position with the lady on top, you have more chances she'll do that at a bedbug emporium.

These things have been around for a long time. IMHO, the reason for the growth is the hotels, motels, hospitals lack of properly caring for the presmises (i.e. changing sheets, bed pads, etc...etc..). I learned this the hard way in my 20's when I used to travel as part of my job. If you always shop for the low end, you're going to get some bed bugs. Higher End spots have them too, but fewer cases.

Funny story: I went for an overnight sleep evaluation and they set me up in a private room. I go to take off my shoes and can feel the dustmites hitting me in twos and threes. I thought to myself, "Yea, I'm going to get an accurate sleep study in a rat trap like this". Needless to say I ended up elsewhere the next week. It's amazing in this day that medical facilities are as awful as they are. Have you ever watched them prep a hospital room for a new occupant? No better than a mid-range hotel while charging top prices. Now who's the criminal here?

You are right on this. Better place to fall sick is ... in a medical center ! If you are not sick, get there, just stay, be patient, you will certainly become a "patient" .

The real bitch in the US is we're paying top rates for staying in 3 star facilies!! No Priceline for hospitals. Where is Shatner when you need him?

I haven't felt well for over a week (sore throat, fever, cough, cold symtoms) and i've wound up with some kind of rash on my face. I stayed in a hotel last week which had a defective A/C unit (it wasn't working) and it was over 32C outside. I'm starting to wonder if i didn't get bitten by a bed bug or some other type of insect. But of course, i often wind up with these type of symptoms at this time of the year since in the past few years i've had a hard time dealing with A/C and extreme heat environments.

Bed bugs can also be present in other environments other than hotels, say in a movie theatre. Lots of people sit in those seats and i'm not even sure they're ever cleaned. Just saying.

My neighbor is employed by an extermination/pest control company and he told me about how they do bed bug exterminations, and in fact he even told me the chemical they use to kill the bed bugs, although I forgot the name of it.

He said they have been called in to do some movie theater exterminations. Movie theaters are very susceptible to bed bugs and you never know who has sat in your seat previously or whether it has been cleaned in days or maybe even weeks. Bed bugs are hitchhikers, and if they got a ride from the last guy in the seat, you may involuntarily pick up this unwanted hitchhiker.

Guys

Just a reminder...

Never put your luggage on the bed. In fact it is supposed to go on that thing that looks like a TV dinner tray that is in the closet. If they do not have one than put your luggage in the tub (empty of course).

Pick up the mattress and look for the characteristic ring on the box spring. If you see that dirty brown ring around your box spring you are in a room with bed bugs.

Lastly, choose a hotel with high hygiene standards. Hotel chains like the Marriott farm this responsibility out to a competent expert in hotel and restaurant hygiene. Stay there.
