The Russian opponent Alexeï Navalny, hospitalized in Berlin, was the victim of an “attempted murder” perpetrated with a chemical nerve agent of the Novichok type, affirms the German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

In Russia, nothing complicated, we poison these opponents.
Well done Mr. Poutine

Why does this surprise anyone.
Russia was always a place where opposition was dealt with deadly force.
Putin is an ex KGB leader he is well schooled in these kind of tactics.
There no lives matter.

Putin: If Russia wanted Nalvalny dead, he would be dead:

So what Putin is saying is that this was a "message poisoning" that was designed to teach Navalny a lesson, presumably the lesson being that if he pushes the level of dissent, he will suffer the consequences.

No, that is not at all what Putin is saying, nor even what the fake news service that you cited is saying. Putin of course denied any Russian involvement, among lots of other brazen bullshit.

That may well not be your "read" but that is what CNN and Radio Liberty (who actually know and understand Russia well) are saying. Feel free to listen to Putin himself and point to anything he says that might support your "read".

Longeldak,

Russia for the last 100 years has been acknowledged by all intelligence communities as the world leaders in using poisons on humans. The number of legendary political poisonings and/or KGB targeted poisonings of intelligence operatives is far too numerous to mention in this thread. Putin is former KGB and had great pride in maintaining this reputation as world leaders and masters of poisons. You have to view his statements with an understanding of this background. It's a message to CIA, Mossad, M16 et al. You need to read the Red Sparrow trilogy and stop listening to mainstream media.

Thank you for your lecture, very entertaining. As you are obviously the topmost expert on all things Russia, Putin and KGB, could you please listen to that recording of the Putin's presser (see link above) and point to anything remotely similar to what you have ascribed to him. Thank you in advance.

Putin has a very adorable chuckle, but I couldn’t understand what he said.

Read my post #3 and quote attributed to Putin. Again, you are not reading the real meaning of what he is saying. It's a statement with 2 meanings, one for those in the media, the other for the people in the intelligence communities.

I am not reading what he is saying, correct. I have a habit to listen to people who are speaking. it is not exactly rocket science to figure out what is going on. The Russians fucked up the assassination (like quite many things they do) and Putin is making a clumsy attempt to cover his tracks. It is amusing to see that his bullshit works for some listeners, no, make that readers.

So as a former member of the intelligence community you get what he is saying while us mere mortals will just have to trust you. Simple enough.
Putin will never openly admit Russia was involved. Russia never openly admits to any wrong doing.
Every country they have ever invaded it was because they were invited in to help the revolution against the ruling government.
It seems the whole Eastern block invited them and the good citizens that they were stuck around for 50 years helping themselves to all they could.
like Longeldak says of course it was a botched attempt on the guys life ordered by Putin but he will never openly admit to it.

Of course Russia botched the attempt at Navalny's life, but the message Putin is putting out there is that if they really wanted him dead, they would have finished the job. And there is a kernel of truth there. This poisoning was very similar to Litvinenko's. Litvinenko's poison was designed to be slow acting and yield a horrible death, and so was Navalny's. The problem was that Navalny was spirited away to Germany where he got better treatment than Litvinenko did after he was poisoned, at a hospital highly specialized in treating poisonings. I am pretty sure that Navalny would have died like Litvinenko did had he not been taken to Germany. What I am suggesting is that Putin may have underestimated the German hospital treatment protocol's efficacy, and for that reason they allowed Navalny to be taken away. They assumed he would end up like Litvinenko did, who died 22 days after his poisoning, with those 22 days being the worst 22 days of his life. So I think the statement was intended to put out a message that they did not really use the full dosage and held back, as they wanted Navalny to suffer to his end. And make no mistake, Navalny probably had a very shitty 22 days like Litvinenko did, and they were the worst 22 of his life, but unlike Litvinenko, he lived, because Putin underestimated the German doctors at that hospital. That is my read on all of this.

Are you quoting from the Red Sparrow trilogy that you recommended we should all read and ideally memorize? Or rather making up all that stuff yourself? Pretty much every assertion you make is verifiably false.

By saying that he is saying that they had nothing to do with it.
He is saying had it been them he would be dead. meaning it wasn’t them.
You are assuming a shit load of things the only thing I can tell you about assuming is what they tell everybody, I am sure that word has been broken down for you.
You are entitled to read things anyway you want, just don’t expect everyone to go along with it.

It turns out that an "undercover" Navalny and a CNN team pranked the involved Russian agents into admitting the poisoning of Navalny:

The progress with human rights in Russia is astonishing. In old soviet times KGB would take you for “interrogation”, put bullet in your head and tell your family that you died from the heart attack and as proof enclose some paper signed by the KGB doctor. Now it takes 5 agents, 3 years of surveillance and a high-tech nerve agent just to attempt a hit job.

Of course Russians are smart enough for a cyber attack on US government computer systems, but an assassination team is so dumb to fall prey to a CNN sting.
Another believable story.
What was the phrase Trump always used, fake news, which of course CNN would never do.
I believe it was a botched attempt but they will never own up to it.

You forgot to mention the fake cyber intrusions.
