JOHANNESBURG - South African “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee who became one of the biggest names in world athletics, was charged on Thursday with shooting dead his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria.

Police said they had opened a murder case after a 30-year-old woman was found dead at the track star’s house after an incident in the upmarket Silverlakes gated complex on the outskirts of the capital.

“At this stage he is on his way to a district surgeon for medical examination,” police brigadier Denise Beukes told reporters outside the heavily guarded residential complex.

Pistorius and his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, had been the only people in the house at the time of the shooting, Beukes, said, and witnesses had been interviewed about the incident, which happened in the early hours of the morning.

“We are talking about neighbours and people that heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place,” she said. Earlier, police said a 9mm pistol had been found at the scene.

When a person has been accused of a crime like murder they look at things like testing under the figure nails, taking a blood alcohol sample and all kinds of other test that are done. They are standard medical tests,” Beukes said.

Pistorius is due to appear in a Pretoria court after 1200 GMT.

Before the murder charge was announced, Johannesburg’s Talk Radio 702 said the 26-year-old may have mistaken Steenkamp for a burglar.

South Africa has some of the world’s highest rates of violent crime, and many home owners have weapons to defend themselves against intruders, although Pistorius’ complex is surrounded by a three metre high wall and electric fence.

In 2004, Springbok rugby player Rudi Visagie shot dead his 19-year-old daughter after he mistakenly thought she was a robber trying to steal his car in the middle of the night.

Steenkamp, a model and regular on the South African party circuit, was reported to have been dating Pistorius for a year, and there had been little to suggest their relationship was in trouble.

In the social pages of last weekend’s Sunday Independent she described him as having “impeccable” taste.

“His gifts are always thoughtful,” she was quoted as saying.

Some of her last Twitter postings indicated she was looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day on Thursday with him.

“What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???” she posted.

I'm absolutely shocked. Oscar Pistorius was one of my heroes at the recent London Olympics.

It has to be a mistake.

Most of the time, not only these guys or girls who goes against all odds in their life, often have to overcome even some of the worst nightmares despite all their dedication, hard work and incredible courage to keep on.

They go on when everyone around them try to discourage them, to 'protect' them against all the disapointements and despairs.

Anyway, this is really sad news in every way.

This made me really sad because she was a spokesperson against this kind of thing. It's also really sad to hear there were many domestic violence calls to their residence and it seems to not have made the light of day. Sad to know someone is speaking out against something but in the shadows she's also a victim of the exact same thing. It also makes me really sad about how society is, like this guy is supposed to be a hero so let's just ignore all this domestic violence.

...guys or girls who goes against all odds in their life,...

Gentle,

I was totally shocked for the same reason. It seems completely inconceivable that anyone who had to fight so hard just have an average life and still achieve so much beyond that to make it at the highest levels of athletic competition and financial success should be the one to take a life. It seems respect for life would have been deeply ingrained by the endless struggles he had to go through. Guess not.

If the charges are all true, and based on reports I don't see how they won't be, it seems anyone can bring with them great frailties and faults no matter how noble their beginnings or struggles, and I still don't get why a person like him would kill another person and throw two lives away at the pinnacle of success and possibilities.

heart-breaking,

Well now it looks like he had many girlfriends and was very good at seducing.

But even then to me it's a perfect example that 'guns in the house' is bound to bring the worst in you.

No matter if you're already a nutcase, paranoid or someone who never did anything criminal.
Whatever the case is, for him.

For instance since Newtown's massacre, as of Feb. 14th there is now over 1800 people killed in USA.
That's an average of over 900 per month or almost 30 each day.

I hope it never happens, but i wouldn't be surprised if one day i wake up & find out from the news that something similar has happened to Rihanna.

Currently, she's the worst poster-girl for victims of domestic abuse. Even though she seems to believe that Chris Brown is a changed man & learned from his mistake(s), it's obvious from several incidents over the past couple of years that he's prone to violent acts. I believe it's only a matter of time until we learn that he's beaten her up again....or worse.

...'guns in the house' is bound to bring the worst in you.

Gentle,

On CNN this morning a biographer spoke about his surprise at being invited to a shooting range by Pistorius while writing his story. Obviously Oscar was very comfortable with his guns. It don't think having a gun automatically leads to this. But having the gun and being comfortable with it, combined with what's becoming clear about a violent temper, created the deadly result. I know a number of gun owners who have no reservations about beating people as a first option in a confrontation. With a gun around that option for those types gets deadlier. A lot of people would be alive if a gun was not present offering itself as a solution during high emotional distress.

I hope Rihanna does not end up the same way. An animal who beats a woman is making a claim of permanent possession/being her master. Coming back only tells him in his view it's true. God help her.

Hello all,

My homepage goes to MSN and this was the first story I noticed. The news made me sick. There's no way one shoots into his own bathroom door several times while knowing his girlfriend is missing from bed and just happens to plunk her right in the head. This is OJ Simpson all over again.

http://news.msn.com/world/judge-pistorius-cant-be-found-guilty-of-murder

However the judge didn't say he was innocent. He said there wasn't enough clear evidence he was guilty of murder, and he's still on the hook for "culpable homicide".

"PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — In a lengthy verdict phase climaxing Oscar Pistorius' trial, the judge said Thursday he can't be found guilty of murder but that he was negligent in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, raising the possibility he'll be convicted of culpable homicide."

Thanks to the South African justice system that still allows suspects to be tried on other charges with different levels of guilt instead of getting them off of the hook as they are so many times in the U.S.. The U.S. should amend it's double jeopardy provisions to leave open the possibility of new significant evidence. The usual U.S. option of using civil rights charges is a poor substitute.

BOYZ,

BLADEKILLER CONVICTED!

http://news.msn.com/world/judge-pistorius-is-guilty-of-culpable-homicide

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — A South African judge on Friday found Oscar Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and declared him not guilty of murder. Prosecutors said they were disappointed by the ruling but would decide on whether to appeal only after sentencing.

Judge Thokozile Masipa said there was not enough evidence to support the contention that Pistorius knew Steenkamp was behind a locked toilet door in his home when he shot through the door in the predawn hours of Valentine's Day last year. Masipa said prosecutors had not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Pistorius intended to kill Steenkamp.

...

The red-robed judge ordered Pistorius, 27, to stand before she delivered the formal verdict on the multiple counts against him, and said it was a unanimous verdict, meaning she and her two legal assessors agreed on the findings. The conviction of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, can bring a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.

It's not nearly as satisfying, but at least this murderer will pay something. I just don't understand the difference between premeditated murder and culpable murder if the judge says he believes Pistorias knew she was behind the door. Maybe it means the act was an unplanned result of momentary rage. It sounds like pure murder to me. Anyway stick this guy somewhere deep and dark, like a snake pit.

Look behind you.
From the post I have been reading, no minimal sentence and he may walk.

Per South African law, the verdict of culpable homicide carries a maximum sentence of 15 years, but does not call for a minimum sentence. The gun charge carries no minimum sentence, meaning Pistorius could receive no jail time whatsoever...

It looks like Pistorius will spend at least a few years in prison. Did any believe he'd get off scot free? This isn't the American judicial system, where punishment often depends on the size of your wallet.

Yup, good to see that he will be in jail for awhile. Agree that here in N.America he could have been a free man.

Oscar Pistorius got away with murder so far. Hopefully, the government will be able to appeal the verdict by the last judge and he will be convicted of the correct charge, 2nd degree murder, even first.

I have no way of knowing if Oscar Pistorius got away with murder. Yes, he did unfortunately kill his gf, but was it intentional or accidental? I think only Pistorius really knows this.

Same thing with Amanda Knox. Is she guilty of killing her roomate Meredith Kercher? Personally, i'm 100% certain she had nothing to do with it. She was once convicted by an italian court, and that verdict was eventually reversed. That verdict reversal was then reversed by an appeal, which was once again reversed recently.

OJ Simpson......believe it or not, some people still believe he was innocent of killing his ex-wife and Ron Goldman. I'm 200% certain he butchered the both of them. You know what i mean....

By the way....FREE LESLIE VAN HOUTEN.

Hello all,

I have no way of knowing if Oscar Pistorius got away with murder.

Of course when you fear someone has broken into your home and your wife is not in the bed and you can't find her anywhere else you would expect it would be the intruder and not your wife in the bathroom so you fire blindly through the door rather than calling to her to know for sure. It couldn't be more obvious he murdered her intentionally soon after a loud fight the neighbors heard well enough. He should be put away permanently.

The Amanda Knox case is very tough to determine, and I believe the last Italian court declared there wasn't enough evidence to convict her.

As for OJ..HE ABSOLUTELY DID IT! I've never doubted that. Why would any man get in a car and run from police while threatening to kill himself after supposedly only "finding" his wife dead. There's no sense to it in the world except he knew what he did and had gone in a state of blind panic. He got away with it because the defense stained the evidence with corruption and race-baiting to a jury constructed of members most likely to side with them. The dried out leather gloves put on over latex was a trick that means nothing to me.
